scholarly journals Exploring the Psychometric Properties of Mandarin-Translated Zuckerman Kuhlman Personality Questionnaire among Chinese High School Students in Malaysia

The Zuckerman Kuhlman Personality Questionnaire (ZKPQ-50-CC) is widely used tool to measure personality traits among the test takers and has been translated in various languages. However, based on the literatures related to personality, it is apparent that there is no Mandarin translated ZKPQ is available to measure personality traits among Chinese population based on the Alternative Five Factor Model. Therefore, the aim of this study is to validate and explore the psychometric properties of the Mandarin-translated version of the Zuckerman Kuhlman Personality Questionnaire. A cross-sectional study was designed involving 250 Malaysian Chinese High school students, aged thirteen to eighteen. Forward-backward translations were performed followed by the factor analysis and reliability testing. The five factors structure was assessed and the factor loadings are similar with the Malay version of ZKPQ. This Mandarin translated ZKPQ comprised of 38 items with the factor loadings ranged from 0.41 to 0.79. The reliability values also showed that Mandarin translated ZKPQ is reliable. As such, the Mandarin translated ZKPQ was found to be valid and reliable to use among Mandarin speaking population for the purpose of personality testing and screening.

Personality Traits reflect people's characteristic patterns of thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. The traits relevant to personality are considered to be steady throughout the work of life as suggested in the Five-Factor Model, which identifies any of the five traits a person may exhibit, namely Openness to experience, Conscientiousness, Extraversion, Agreeableness, and Neuroticism (OCEAN). On the other hand, academic motivation is the student's desire, as reflected in his approach, persistence, and level of interest regarding academic subjects when his competence is judged against a standard of performance.  Students with behavior concerns are those who underwent disciplinary action due to misdemeanor. Their delinquency may be related to their personality traits, demographics, or lack of academic motivation.  Hence, the paper identified the dominant personality traits and assessed 40 male high school students' academic motivation with behavior concerns in a Catholic school in Antique during the School Year 2019-2020.  Likewise, it explores the difference in academic motivation level when grouped according to demographic variables, namely, family monthly income, family structure, and type of misdemeanor. Also, it determines the relationship between personality traits and academic motivation of students with behavior concerns.

This study analyzes the association of personality traits, psychopathological factors, and school achievement. High School Personality Questionnaire, Clinical Analysis Questionnaire, and academic marks of 224 high school students (90 boys and 134 girls) are used. It can be stated that the predictive ability of measures of personality traits and clinical dimensions is very weak for both boys and girls. The Clinical Analysis Questionnaire does not seem to be useful in the prediction of school achievement.

Objectives: To test the psychometric properties of the Suicidal Ideation Questionnaire (SIQ) among Chinese high school students. Methods: The reliability and validity of SIQ were analyzed with data of 505 high school students in Jinan, China. Results: The Cronbach's coefficient alpha of SIQ was above 0.95 and the Cronbach's coefficients alphas of SIQ when each item was deleted were relatively stable. The convergent validity analyses showed that there were statistically significant correlations between SIQ total scores and DSD total scores by gender. Exploratory factor analysis produced four factors of SIQ. Conclusion: The SIQ has a high level of reliability and validity and should be a reliable measure for suicide ideation in Chinese high school students.

The present study sought to examine the relationship between Chinese high school students’ academic self-efficacy and their academic-related boredom. Another objective was to explore the moderating effects of mono-amine-oxidase type A ( MAOA) gene polymorphism on this relationship. In a sample of 514 Chinese high school students, we measured their academic self-efficacy and academic-related boredom from Grades 10 to 12. In addition, we collected their DNA. Data were analyzed by using a linear mixture model. The results indicated that students’ academic self-efficacy negatively predicted their academic-related boredom. The relationship between academic self-efficacy and academic-related boredom was more reliable for students with the 3-repeat allele than for the students with the 4-repeat allele. The findings suggested that the functional polymorphism of MAOA gene moderated the relationship between academic self-efficacy and academic-related boredom.
