The paper deals with the subject of the prediction of useful energy during the cycling of a lithium-ion cell (LIC), using machine learning-based techniques. It was demonstrated that depending on the combination of cycling parameters, the useful energy (<i>RUE<sub>c</sub></i>) that can be transfered during a full cycle is variable, and also three different types of evolution of changes in <i>RUE<sub>c</sub></i> were identified. The paper presents a new non-parametric <i>RUE<sub>c</sub></i> prediction model based on Gaussian process regression. It was proven that the proposed methodology enables the <i>RUE<sub>c</sub></i> prediction for LICs discharged, above the depth of discharge, at a level of 70% with an acceptable error, which is confirmed for new load profiles. Furthermore, techniques associated with explainable artificial intelligence were applied, for the first time, to determine the significance of model input parameters – the variable importance method – and to determine the quantitative effect of individual model parameters (their reciprocal interaction) on <i>RUE<sub>c</sub></i> – the accumulated local effects model of the first and second order. Not only is the <i>RUE<sub>c</sub></i> prediction methodology presented in the paper characterised by high prediction accuracy when using small learning datasets, but it also shows high application potential in all kinds of battery management systems.

Low-order, explicit models of lithium ion cells are critical for real-time battery management system (BMS) applications. This paper presents a seventh-order, electrolyte enhanced single particle model (ESPM) with electrolyte diffusion and temperature dependent parameters (ESPM-T). The impedance transfer function coefficients are explicit in terms of the model parameters, simplifying the implementation of temperature dependence. The ESPM-T model is compared with a commercially available finite volume based model and results show accurate matching of pulse responses over a wide range of temperature (T) and C-rates (I). The voltage response to 30 s pulse charge–discharge current inputs is within 5% of the commercial code for 25 °C<T<50 °C at I≤12.5C and -10 °C<T<50°C at I≤1C for a graphite/nickel cobalt manganese (NCM) lithium ion cell.

Based on the genetic algorithm (GA), a novel type of parameters identification method on battery model was proposed. The battery model parameters were optimized by genetic optimization algorithm and the other parameters were identified through the hybrid pulse power characterization (HPPC) test. Accuracy and efficiency of the battery model were validated with the dynamic stress test (DST). Simulation and experiment results shows that the proposed model of the lithium-ion battery with identified parameters was accurate enough to meet the requirements of the state of charge (SoC) estimation and battery management system.

Accurate prediction of the energy consumption is critical for energy-efficient production systems. However, the majority of existing prediction models aim at providing only point predictions and can be affected by uncertainties in the model parameters and input data. In this paper, a prediction model that generates prediction intervals (PIs) for estimating energy consumption of a milling machine is proposed. PIs are used to provide information on the confidence in the prediction by accounting for the uncertainty in both the model parameters and the noise in the input variables. An ensemble model of neural networks (NNs) is used to estimate PIs. A k-nearest-neighbors (k-nn) approach is applied to identify similar patterns between training and testing sets to increase the accuracy of the results by using local information from the closest patterns of the training sets. Finally, a case study that uses a dataset obtained by machining 18 parts through face-milling, contouring, slotting and pocketing, spiraling, and drilling operations is presented. Of these six operations, the case study focuses on face milling to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed energy prediction model.

Vehicle manufacturers positioned electric vehicles (EVs) and hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) as reliable, safe and environmental friendly alternative to traditional fuel based vehicles. Charging EVs using renewable energy resources reduce greenhouse emissions. The Lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries used in EVs are susceptible to failure due to voltage imbalance when connected to form a pack. Hence, it requires a proper balancing system categorised into passive and active systems based on the working principle. It is the prerogative of a battery management system (BMS) designer to choose an appropriate system depending on the application. This study compares and evaluates passive balancing system against widely used inductor based active balancing system in order to select an appropriate balancing scheme addressing battery efficiency and balancing speed for E-vehicle segment (E-bike, E-car and E-truck). The balancing systems are implemented using “top-balancing” algorithm which balance the cells voltages near the end of charge for better accuracy and effective balancing. The most important characteristics of the balancing systems such as degree of imbalance, power loss and temperature variation are determined by their influence on battery performance and cost. To enhance the battery life, Matlab-Simscape simulation-based analysis is performed in order to fine tune the cell balancing system for the optimal usage of the battery pack. For the simulation requirements, the battery model parameters are obtained using least-square fitting algorithm on the data obtained through electro chemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) test. The achieved balancing time of the passive and active cell balancer for fourteen cells were 48 and 20 min for the voltage deviation of 30 mV. Also, the recorded balancing time was 215 and 42 min for the voltage deviation of 200 mV.
