Hedyotis hamiguitanensis, from Mt. Hamiguitan, Davao Oriental, Philippines, is described, illustrated, and compared with two similar species, H. whiteheadii and H. schlechteri. This species is distinguished from congeneric Philippine species by its 5–12 cm long, compound, umbellate inflorescences, pendulous flowers, lanceolate to oblanceolate, thick, scabrid leaf blades with revolute margins. Its phylogenetic systematic position within the tribe Spermococeae is determined with a phylogenetic analysis using chloroplast (rps16, petD) and nuclear ribosomal (ITS, ETS) nucleotide sequence data.

A new species, Ophiocordyceps ponerus, is reported from a survey of invertebrate-associated fungi in Xiaochehe Wetland Park, Guiyang City, China. Evidence for the new species is provided by morphological and molecular characters. Synnemata of this species emerged from cadavers of soldier ants of Ponera sp. (Hymenoptera). It differs from similar species mainly in having verticillate phialides on the upper portions of the synnemata with septa, 112–158 × 7.5–10 μm; cylindrical or oval conidiogenous cells, which are inflated at the base, and suddenly tapering to a short, thin and verrucose neck, 13–25 × 2.5–5 μm; solitary, smooth conidia nearly oval or forming curved orange segments, 7.5–10 × 3.8–5 μm. Phylogenetic analysis using combined ITS, SSU, RPB2 and TEF sequence data support its systematic position in Ophiocordyceps and as a new species.

The spider genus Nemoscolus Simon, 1895 (Araneidae) has been neglected taxonomically despite the unique retreat that several species construct in their horizontal orb-webs, composed of pebbles and other detritus. The distribution of Nemoscolus is poorly known and the genus includes species from Africa and Europe. Nemoscolus is placed in Simon’s Cycloseae species group along with Cyclosa Menge, 1866, Acusilas Simon, 1895, Arachnura Vinson, 1863, Witica O. Pickard-Cambridge, 1895, among others. Here we describe a new species from Queensland, Australia, N. sandersi, sp. nov., drastically expanding the distribution range of the genus. We use nucleotide sequence data to phylogenetically place Nemoscolus using model-based inference methods within Araneidae and to explore its affinities to Simon’s Cycloseae. The data support propinquity of Nemoscolus with Acusilas and Arachnura but not with Cyclosa. Our analyses suggest that Cycloseae is not a clade, with Cyclosa, Acusilas, Witica and Nemoscolus not sharing a recent common ancestor. This use of an integrated granular retreat represents at least the second independent evolution of such a structure within Araneidae. These results improve our understanding of both phylogeny and retreat evolution in araneid spiders.

A new orchid species, Liparis funingensis, from Yunnan, China, is described and illustrated in this study based on morphological and molecular analyses. A detailed comparison between the newly discovered orchid and other members of Liparis was performed. This new plant is characterized by an obovate lip and is trilobed. The sidelobes are semiorbicular and fleshy, and the midlobe is short and bilobed with triangular lobes. The disc has a deeply bilobed basal callus and two longitudinal lamellae from the base extending to above the middle. There are four pollinia in two pairs, with each pair exhibiting long caudicles without a viscidium. The rostellum also has a bursa synovialis. These features distinguish this new orchid from all other known species of Liparis. A phylogenetic analysis was subsequently performed to determine the systematic position of this enigmatic species. A molecular study based on nuclear ribosomal ITS and plastid matK DNA sequence data indicates that L. funingensis is a member of L. layardii subclade.

Russula buyckii, a new species of Russula (subgen. Incrustatula, sect. Lilaceinae and subsect. Lilaceinae) is described from Eastern Himalaya, India. Its macro- and micro-morphological features are described in detail and compared with those of similar species. Identification and categorization of R. buyckii was supported by the molecular phylogenetic analysis based on the nrDNA ITS sequence data.

A new species, Pseudodactylaria brevis, is described, illustrated and compared with other Pseudodactylaria and Dactylaria-like taxa. Evidence for the new species is provided by morphological comparison and sequence data analyses. Pseudodactylaria brevis can be distinguished from other Pseudodactylaria and Dactylaria-like species by its short hyaline conidiophores and fusiform, 1-septate hyaline conidia. Phylogenetic analysis of LSU and ITS sequence data was carried out to determine the phylogenetic placement of the species and confirm the taxonomic status of Pseudodactylariaceae.

A new species, Russula rubricolor, was collected in the Himalayan forests of Pakistan. This species is morphologically characterized by the yellowish hymenium, bright red pileus that is convex to flat with central depression and finally infundibuliform and striate towards margin, becoming blackish red with age. The newly reported species is placed in Russula subsect. Maculatinae based molecular phylogenetic analysis of ITS sequence data and supported by the red pileus color.

The genus Protubera includes gasteroid species. Its members are globally distributed in tropical, subtropical, and temperate areas, and presently, six species are recognized. In this paper, Protubera beijingensis from North China is described as a new species. Its morphological description and illustration are provided in detail and compared with morphologically similar species. A multigene phylogenetic analysis based on nLSU, atp6, and rpb2 sequences of the genus Protubera also identifies this organism as a new species within Protubera.

A new species, Akanthomyces neocoleopterorum, which was isolated from an infected ladybug, is introduced. Morphological comparisons with extant species and DNA-based phylogenies from analysis of a multigene dataset support the establishment of the new species. It differs from other species by having mononematous and verticillium-like conidiophores, longer phialides, and mostly cylindrical conidia. Both the morphological identification and phylogenetic analysis of combined ITS, LSU, RPB1, RPB2 and TEF sequence data support A. neocoleopterorum as a new species in the genus Akanthomyces.

During a survey of entomopathogenetic fungi from Southwest China, a new species, Akanthomyces lepidopterorum was found on an undetermined lepidopteran larva. It differs from other species based on mostly smaller conidia, mononematous conidiophores and moderate length of phialide. Both the morphological identification and phylogenetic analysis of combined ITS, LSU and RPB2 sequence data support A. lepidopterorum as a new species. A new combination is also proposed in the genus Akanthomyces.

A new species, Pestalotiopsis licualacola, was isolated from grey leafspots of Licuala grandis (ruffled fan palm). It is morphologically distinct in having relatively small, greyish brown conidia (16–20 × 3–5 μm), and 1–3 short apical appendages without knobs. Phylogenetic analysis based on combination of ITS, β-tubulin and tef1 gene sequence data clearly distinguishes P. licualacola from other species in this genus, with ex-type sequence data in GenBank. Based on morphology and molecular phylogeny we describe it as a new species.
