IMPROVING SPEAKING SKILL OF THE ELEVENTH-GRADE STUDENTS OF SMAN 8 DENPASAR IN ACADEMIC YEAR 2017/2018 THROUGH BRITISH PARLIAMENTARY STYLE DEBATE TECHNIQUE

Abstract   This classroom action research was done in the area of speaking.  It was found that the eleventh grade students of SMAN 8 Denpasar got difficulty  in communicating and delivering ideas. The objective of this study was to figure out whether or not speaking  skill of the eleventh-grade students of SMAN 8 Denpasar in academic year 2017/2018 could be improved  through  British  Parliamentary  Style Debate Technique.  The research was undertaken based on the result of the interview with the teacher who taught the students. Pre-test was then carried out, and it was found that the subjects’ speaking skill was low. In order to settle down the problem, British Parliamentary Style Debate Technique was implemented as the technique to improve the subjects’ speaking skill. The study was conducted in two cycles. Furthermore, the result of post- test in each cycle showed that there were significant improvements on the subjects’ speaking skill after British  Parliamentary  Style  Debate technique  was applied. After the treatment of pre-test, the reflection or post-test was administered.   The mean figure of the reflection or post-test scores obtained by the subjects under study in cycle I was 70.52. and in cycle  II  was  78.34. In addition, based on the data of the questionnaire, the subjects’ responses towards the application of the technique was positive.  Therefore, it could be concluded that speaking skill of the eleventh- grade students of SMAN 8 Denpasar in academic year 2017/2018 could be improved through British Parliamentary Style Debate Technique. This Collaborative Classroom Action Research aimed at enhancing students’ speaking skill through the application of Circle Game. It was conducted in one cycle consisting of two meetings. The subject was the seventh of C class of SMPN 2 Alas Barat consisting of 22 students. The types of data were qualitative (acquiring observation during the learning process) and quantitative (speaking tests). The results qualitatively showed that the implementation of Circle Game enhanced the students’ speaking skills. Such improvement could be seen from their enthusiasm, their interesting feeling in various materials presented by the teacher, their active involvement. In the quantitative findings, the result also showed a higher value of the mean score of the post-test (77.34) rather than the pre-test (75.75). In conclusion, the use of Circle Game can improve students’ speaking skill.

The study of this research was to figure out the improvement of speaking skill of the eighth grade students of SMP Budi UtamaKerobokan in academic year 2019/2020 through inside outside circle with video. The subjects were the eighth grade students of SMP Budi UtamaKerobokan in academic year 2019/2020. The passing grade of the eight grade students is 77. The design was classroom action research that carried out through inside outside circle with video technique in two cycles, on each cycle consisted of two sessions. The obtained data were collected by administering the instruments to the subjects, then qualitatively from the questionnaire. The result in each cycle showed that the pre-test was 65.5, than there was significant improvement in post-test 1 was 74.8, and last on post-test 2 was 82.7. It means that 75% of the subjects pass the passing grade. The result of the questionnaire showed that 99% of the students agree with implementation of this technique. In short, the present classroom action research showed that speaking skill of the eighth grade students of SMP Budi UtamaKerobokan in academic year 2019/2020 can be improved through inside outside circle with video.

Communication is very significant for human being because there is hardly any human activity without communication. This research is Classroom Action Research (CAR) which was conducted to improve the eleventh grade students’ speaking skill by using audio visual aids in SMA Santo Petrus Medan in the Academic Year of 2018/2019. The results of the study showed significant improvement of the students’ speaking skill and responses after being taught by using audio visual aids is very good because the students felt enthusiastics and motivated. The result of the test showed that the students’ mean score in pre-test is 51,97 with 8,82% of the students got score ≥ 75, in formative-test mean score is 60,70 with 14,70% of the students got score ≥ 75 and in post-test mean score is 75,35 with 44,11% of the students got score ≥ 75. Based on the results, it can be concluded that using audio visual aids as a learning a instrument gives the improvement to students’ speaking skill.

This research is done because the mean of pretest speaking is 65.73. The KKM is 75.00. The problems of this research are: 1) Can the use of a Debate Method increase the students’ Speaking Skill on Discussion Text at class XII   SMAN 1 Bengkulu?. 2) How is the effectiveness of procedures of Using a Debate Method to Increase the Students’Speaking skill on Discussion Text at class XII  SMAN 1 Bengkulu? The aims of this research are: 1).To increase the students’ speaking skill on Discussion Text at class XII  SMAN 1 Bengkulu. 2).To find out how the effective procedure of using a debate method to increase the students’ speaking skill on discussion text at class XII SMAN 1 Bengkulu. This classroom action research which uses descriptive qualitative technique. This method uses pre-test and two cycles. Each cycle consists of four steps: planning, action, observation, and reflection. The source of the data is the teacher, collaborator as observer and students, and the result of the test. The total of the students are 35 students. Technique and collecting data uses observation and test.The result of classroom action research from observation cycle 1 is not good, that is 65%. And the result speaking test cycle1 is not good either, the mean score is 74.93%. 2 students get score 55-64, and the percentage is 5.71%. 12 students get score 65-74, and the percentage is 34.29%. 21 students get score 75-84 and the percentage is 60%. N0ne get score 85-94. The result of observation cycle 2 is good, that is 89%, and so is the result speaking test cycle 2, and the mean score is 80,64% .None of  students get score below 75, and the percentage means 0%, 31 students get score 75-84, and the percentage is 88,57%. 4students get score 85-94, and the percentage is 11.43%. And even thought none student gets score 95-100 ,but the result is satisfied. The mean is 80,64. From the observation result of the test cycle 2 shows that the success of the learning process is good. KKM for English is 75.00, so the learning activity of students is fulfilled for the KKM.  From the result of the cycle test 2, the mean score is 80,64% , learning activity uses a Debate Method to Increase the students’ speaking skill on Discussion Text at class XII IPS 2 SMAN 1 Bengkulu  semester 1 academic year 2017-2018 is successful.

This research was conducted in order to improve students’ Reading Comprehension on Narrative Texts through ETR method and to know the students’ responses towards the learning reading comprehension through ETR method at SMA Swasta Palapa Medan. In conducting this research, the writer used Classroom Action Research (CAR). This research showed that teaching reading comprehension through ETR method at SMA Swasta Palapa Medan could improve their reading comprehension. The result of the test showed that the students’ mean score in pre-test is 51.59 with 4 students (13,79%) of the students got score ≥70, in formative test the mean score is 68.69 with 15 students (51,72%) of the students got score ≥70, and in post-test the mean score is 77.66 with 21 students (72,41%) of the students got score ≥70. The writer concluded that ETR method could improve the eleventh grade students’ reading comprehension on narrative texts of SMA Swasta Palapa Medan. On the other hand, the students’ responses towards the method of the teaching sound good because above 80% of the students are interested, motivated and understand the lesson with the ETR method.

AbstractThe research was conducted to investigate the role of Pictures as the teaching media in improving the Second Graders’ English vocabulary at SD Pangudi Luhur, Jakarta in Academic Year 2016/2017. To achieve the objective, the data were collected through the tests, questionnaires and observer’s sheet. The respondents consisted of 25 students. The result showed that pictures as teaching media could improve the students’ vocabulary, proved by the increase of the mean score of the pre-test and post-test 1 and 2: 61.32; 70.48; and 81.08. The findings were also strengthened by the respondents’ positive attitudes towards the media used collected through questionnaires.Keywords: vocabulary, pictures, classroom action research

AbstractThis was a research report on developing students’ vocabulary through watching English cartoon films. The objectives of this research were to develop students’ vocabulary and students’ responses on learning vocabulary through watching English cartoon film at SMP BHAKTI, Jakarta. This research used classroom action research (CAR) method in which the students consisted of 23 eighth graders of SMP BHAKTI, Jakarta and comprised15 males and 8 females. To collect the data the researcher used test and non-test techniques. The test technique was realized in pre-test and post-test; while the non-test one was in questionnaire, observation sheet, and diary notes. Based on the test analysis results, it was found that the mean score of the pretest, post-test in Cycle 1 and 2 were 60.73 points, 80.86 points, and 90.00 points respectively. The gain between the post-test and pre-test scores in Cycle 1 was 33.14% and the gain between the post-test in Cycle 1 and post-test scores in Cycle 2 was 11.30%. The gain between pre-test and post-test scores in Cycle 2 was 48.69%. Therefore, it can be concluded that watching English cartoon films could develop the eighth graders’ vocabulary of SMP BHAKTI, Jakarta. Besides, based on the questionnaire, observation sheet, and diary notes analysis results, it was revealed that students agreed that watching English cartoon films was a good strategy to develop their vocabulary. The conclusion is that watching English cartoon films can develop students’ vocabulary.Keywords: English cartoon films, vocabulary, action research

<p>This article discusses a classroom action research using movie<strong> </strong>discussion to improve students‟ speaking skill and find out the situation in class when movie discussion is being conducted in class. The method used in the research is classroom action research conducted in two cycles. Each cycle consisted of four meetings including post test. The procedure of the research consists of identifying the problems, planning the action, implementing the action, observing or monitoring the action, reflecting the result of the observation, and revising the plan for the following steps. Documents, photographs, field notes, interviews, observation, and tests were used to collect the data. The qualitative data are analyzed by assembling the data, coding the data, comparing the data, building interpretations, and reporting the outcomes. The quantitative data are analyzed by comparing the mean scores of pre test and post test. The result of this research shows that movie discussion can improve students‟ speaking skill and classroom situation.</p>

The aim of this research is to find out how the implementation of role plays can improve the students’ speaking skill of grade VII of MTs Mualimin Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta in academic year 2011/2012 and how students respond to the use of role plays methods in teaching and learning process. This research is an action research. In this study the researcher uses action research theory proposed by Kemmis and McTaggart. The participants of the research are the students of grade VII of MTs Mualimin Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta in academic year 2011/2012. The research instrument used by the writer is in the form of observation checklist and test. The data in the research are mainly gathered through the use of pre-test, observation, questionnaires, and post-test. After the data are collected, the researcher analyzes them. The researcher uses the pre-test as the basis for measuring the students’ reading skill. The finding of the research shows that the implementation of translation and discussion can improve students’ speaking skill of grade VII of MTs Muhammmadiyah Yogyakarta in academic year 2011/2012. In the pre-test result, in which they formerly did not learn using discussion and translation, the mean of the pre-test was 55.64. After they learnt English using discussion and translation, the mean of the post-test was 63.3. The students’ response was positive when role plays methods were applied in teaching speaking.

AbstractThe main objective of this research is to improve the tenth graders’ speaking skill throughstorytelling technique at SMK Bhakti. This research is a two-cycle-process of classroom actionresearch. The subject of the research was the students of tenth graders at SMK Bhakti-2. Therewere 20 students (12 males and 8 females). The instruments were the test, observation, interview,and diary notes. The result indicated that there was significant improvement of students’ scoresin the Pre-test to Post-test II. The mean of students’ Pre-test scores was 48.20, and 63.30 forPost-test I. On the contrary, it was 77.70 in Post-test II. It was supported by interview, diarynotes, and observation showing that there was students’ interest in learning through theimplementation of storytelling. It, therefore, is suggested for English teachers to make use of thetechnique to actively encourage and increase the students’s positive learning attitude towardsspeaking English.Keywords: storytelling technique, action research, speaking skill
