We survey the mathematical literature on umbral calculus (otherwise known as the calculus of finite differences) from its roots in the 19th century (and earlier) as a set of “magic rules” for lowering and raising indices, through its rebirth in the 1970’s as Rota’s school set it on a firm logical foundation using operator methods, to the current state of the art with numerous generalizations and applications. The survey itself is complemented by a fairly complete bibliography (over 500 references) which we expect to update regularly.

The Seminary influence on the governorate social life development was an integral part of social processes in the period of 1867-1884, which formed the prototype of the modern education practice. Identification of the Seminary role in the Tambov Governorate social life of the 19th century is a research component of this study, which affects the knowledge of the spiritual and moral education of society current state. Manuscript drafting source was the archival data of Tambov eparchy clergy activities of the late 19th century, the periodical press data of the same period. We interpret the obtained sources in the logic of the general civilized approach to the study of Seminary as an institution of social life characterized by regional aspects. Studies of the role of Seminary in social life have shown the sequence of its formation and development, its further socialization in the social life of the governorate. Special importance is attached to the Tambov Seminary in the years of transformations. Spiritual and moral influence of the Seminary on contemporaries, its increasingly active participation in the public life of the city, the change of its moral appearance contributed to the increase in the authority (role) of the Seminary in the social life of the Tambov Governorate.

Miniatures and small portraits are highly significant to the cultural history of Modern and Contemporary periods. We have focused on portrait miniature, due to the lack of research on this area in Spain, even though miniatures had been deeply appreciated among private collectors. With the aim of attempting the state of the art, we have carefully analysed a variety of bibliographical references, starting with the first studies dated from the 19th century, finishing with the more recent ones, by Spanish and foreign authors. It is worth mentioning that, today, researchers are following an interdisciplinary methodology that we consider highly enriching.

This text is about the main artistic production of the Armenian family of painters Yovnatʽanean – named after its forefather Nałaš Yovnatʽan – and it focuses especially on the state of the art of this subject. As leading figures of the origins of ‘modern’ Armenian painting, the Yovnatʽaneans represent a central phase in the artistic path of their people. Moreover, they allow us to address some more general historiographic issues linked to studies on Armenian culture and to the development of art in Southern Caucasus and in Central Asia between the 17th and the 19th century.

The article analyses one of the possible types of villagers’ mobility, i.e. the commercial mobility of Ukrainian peasants in the first half of the 19th century. The issues of commerce were widely presented in the pages of the then periodicals in Lviv. For this reason, they became the main historical source on which the present study was based, since they reported the current state of the public discourse. The correspondents for “Gazet Lwowska”, “Tygodnik Rolniczo-Przemysłowy”, “Rozmaitości” – W. Pol, J. Żywicki, M. Stöger, K. Turowski – dedicated relatively a lot of attention to the issues of commerce. The press focused on such issues as villagers’’ trade in cattle, wood, cloth and farm produce.

The article concerns selected aspects of the modernization of Galician society as illustrated by demographic changes in Rzeszów in the 19th century. The subject of the study is the first demographic transition consisting in the reduction of the value of the birth and death rates. In the case of smaller cities, such as Rzeszów, the use of nineteenth-century statistical data raises doubts among historians. The re-analysis, taking into account the current state of research, provides the premises for the conclusion that in Rzeszów at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries the symptoms of the first demographic transition were noticeable.

Тhe beginnings of a bilingual Russian-Polish and Polish-Russian lexicography: A literature reviewThe article presents an attempt to consolidate data of Russian-Polish and Polish-Russian lexicography of the period from the 17th century to the first quarter of the 19th century, provided in the bibliography of Polish dictionaries compiled by P. Grzegorczyk and the works of archeographists and historians of written languages. The author supposes that the absence of earliest Polish-East Slavic and East Slavic-Polish dictionaries in the most complete bibliography of Polish dictionaries may be explained as a consequence of the ambiguous ethnic character of written languages of the East Slavic peoples compared to recent differenctiation of East Slavic languages, as well as a result of the manuscript character of those dictionaries.

This paper is an introduction to behavioral genetics for researchers and practioners in language development and disorders. The specific aims are to illustrate some essential concepts and to show how behavioral genetic research can be applied to the language sciences. Past genetic research on language-related traits has tended to focus on simple etiology (i.e., the heritability or familiality of language skills). The current state of the art, however, suggests that great promise lies in addressing more complex questions through behavioral genetic paradigms. In terms of future goals it is suggested that: (a) more behavioral genetic work of all types should be done—including replications and expansions of preliminary studies already in print; (b) work should focus on fine-grained, theory-based phenotypes with research designs that can address complex questions in language development; and (c) work in this area should utilize a variety of samples and methods (e.g., twin and family samples, heritability and segregation analyses, linkage and association tests, etc.).
