The purpose of the research – is to demonstrate how the historiographic image of Wilhelm von Habsburg, known as Colonel Vasyl Vyshyvanyi, was constructed on the basis of sources of personal origin and historiography materials that were deposited during the XX century. In the first time in historiography shown as the as the story of the Austrian archduke, who decided to change his national identity and chose for himself the image of a fighter for the will of Ukraine, unfolded and mythologized. The history of the life of the Austrian Archduke Wilhelm von Habsburg-Lötringen has in recent years been enriched by a number of thorough studies. The main issue of this research was the question of choosing a Ukrainian national identity. The construction of the Ukrainian legend Vasyl Vyshyvany in the historiography began, based on his own autobiography. As the accumulation of source and scientific material, the question of the vision of the hero evolved: from explaining the circumstances of change of national self-identification to exploring the motives of this step. Changes in the interpretation of this issue were also outlined and brought to the cultural and philosophical research field.

The article presents the social and political face of Lviv during the First World War, based on the memoirs of Bohdan Janusz. The notes covering the initial period of the war from the perspective of a Polish-Ukrainian researcher of the culture and past of Lviv and Eastern Galicia present not only the strong emotional context of the described events, but also fully reflect the atmosphere in the city. The diversification of the transmission of the ego-documents, due to the social status of their author, allows a much closer look at the collective portrait of the inhabitants of Lviv.

The article deals with two positive visions of Piotr Skarga (as an important figure in the national history) created in literature: romantic and positivist ones, and their impact on journalism. The interest in his figure on the part of the Galician press took place on the occasion of the 300th anniversary of the priest’s death and the organization of Skarga Congress in Kraków. The analyzed magazines, regardless of their political affinities, considered and assessed various aspects of Skarga’s activity: political, religious, social and literary-linguistic ones. The presentation of the characters often reflected the socio-political views of the press circles.

Our article presents three different historic narratives of the city of Buchach in former Eastern Galicia, a Polish, Jewish and Ukrainian one, according to the city’s mixed population, consisting of a larger Jewish, a smaller Polish and a still smaller Ukrainian group. The Polish historic narrative is represented by Sadok Barącz’s book “Pamiątki buczackie”, the Ukrainian one by the Historical and Memoiristical Collection “The City of Buchach and its Region”, compiled by emigration writers, and the Jewish narrative by Y.S. Agnon’s “A City in its Fulness”. These sources provide different ways of presenting history, sometimes converging and sometimes diverging from each other, which is illustrated by the depiction of selected historic events: the siege of the city by Chmelnicki’s troops in 1648, the role of the city in the Polish-Turkish war of 1672, the importance of Austrian rule since 1772 for the city, and the city’s fate in the time of World War I and immediately after the war. Our comparison of the above three historic narratives ends with the re-evaluation of the figure of Mikołaj Potocki, Polish nobleman, who today is held in high esteem by Ukrainian historians of art because of his function as a founder of the most beautiful buildings in Buchach and a sponsor of famous artists, creators of these architectural monuments. He is seen as a mediator between the Polish and Ukrainian tradition.

Bringing the poet’s body to Wawel in 1890 became an event of international significance. Due to its multiculturalism, Lviv was of special importance. From the perspective of the administrative capital, the celebrations created an opportunity to build a national unity of a supra-ethnic nature based on Polish culture. On the other hand, they revealed the growing Polish-Ukrainian antagonism. The celebration of bringing the body of A. Mickiewicz to Kraków also became a catalyst for the development of research on the literature of Romanticism.

The aim of the article is to analyze the image of Agenor Gołuchowski in the light of caricatures published in Viennese satirical magazines (1895–1906). Agenor Gołuchowski the younger (1849–1921) was the only Pole in the position of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Austria- Hungary (1895–1906). More than once, he became the object of mockery in newspapers such as “Kikeriki!”, “Wiener Caricaturen”, or “Der Floh”. The article focuses on how Gołuchowski was portrayed in caricatures and on what aspects of his identity they were focused. Caricatures are a contribution to reflection on racial and national stereotypes in Viennese satire and the mentality of the late nineteenth century.

The article deals with the issue of car registration by the Krakow Police Directorate in the years 1906–1918 and the registers of this process kept by it. The registration system was based on assigning individual vehicle numbers to each vehicle, consisting of a letter-distinguishing mark and a three-digit number. These registers have been preserved in the resources of the National Archives in Krakow. As of today, they are the only known documents of this type related to the history of the automotive industry in Galicia. Their analysis facilitated the preparation of an inventory of cars registered in Kraków in 1906–1918.
