Nursing students are exposed to a vast amount of information and reading material that is very specific, technical, and new to the students. Unless nurse educators provide a learning environment that promotes understanding through interaction, students might only commit unassimilated information to their short-term memory through rote learning, and no meaningful learning will occur. Nursing students must be able to link learned facts, concepts and principles with new knowledge in order to make sound rational decisions in practice (All & Havens 1997:1210, 1213). The aim of this paper is to describe the utilisation of concept-mapping as a teaching method to facilitate critical thinking by students in nursing education. The description of the utilisation of concept-mapping is done from the theoretical framework of concept-mapping and critical thinking to provide the epistemological basis for concept-mapping (Facione 1990:6, 13). Based on the exploration and description of the theoretical frameworks, four steps to facilitate critical thinking were formulated through concept-mapping on the basis of the educational process: the identification, interactive constructing process, formulation and evaluation steps. It is concluded that the utilisation of these steps will assist nurse educators to implement conceptmapping as a teaching method to facilitate critical thinking by student nurses in nursing education. Recommendations are made.

Abstract Background: Multiple researches are going on in the field of promotion of critical thinking skills among nurses and one of the well studied teaching strategies is Concept Mapping (CM). Though Concept mapping is proved to be effective in promotion of critical thinking, it is not widely used. So this study aimed to identify the attitude of student nurses in relation to Concept mapping. Methods: Descriptive survey design was used in this study. Thirty nine pre-final year nursing students participated in this study. 5 point Likert scale was used to assess the attitude of the students. Verbal opinion was also collected in relation to Concept mapping. Results: There were 10 positive and 8 negative statements regarding Concept mapping which the student nurses evaluated. The mean attitude score was 74.5% which showed that the students were in favour of concept mapping. 97% of the students had said that they can easily apply it to the nursing process and 77% of them agreed that it can be used for the entire subjects including non nursing subjects like basic sciences. However, 61% of the students had said the preparation of concept mapping as a time consuming task and they would prefer traditional method of writing care plans. They had expressed that concept mapping made their mind fresh, kindled their thinking and improved their critical thinking. Many of them suggested that if concept mapping was being introduced to them from the first, it would have been the best method to write care plans. Conclusion: As there is acceptance from the student to use concept mapping, it is required to prepare the nurse educators to use concept mapping as one of the teaching method.

Introduction: Nurse Educators are the main driving force in promoting the interest of nursing students to learn. The nursing education system needs to be updated and carried out research in the field of curriculum reform. Concept mapping is an innovative teaching method and can be reflected in meaningful learning. Methodology: This study involved 109 nursing students from two nursing colleges in Kubang Kerian Nursing College (Kelantan) represent East Zone and Pulau Pinang Nursing College represent North Zone. The respondents were selected using simple random sampling. The descriptive values of items were expressed as means, standard deviations, frequencies and percentages. Results: The results of this analysis show that students receive good use of concept maps in teaching and learning. Overall mean their acceptance towards concept map is 3.44. The students’ perception towards concept mapping among nursing students shows that positive-medium. Conclusion: Concept mapping is one method that aims to improve the meaningful learning among students. For this reason, nurse educators must think and reexamine the best method to teach and to empower nursing students to learning. It is because nowadays nurses need high critical thinking skills and a critical thinking disposition because everyday nurses encounter with multiple patients with the same health care needs. However, each patient responds to these needs differently.

The study was designed to explore the effect of concept mapping as an innovative teaching method on senior school students‟ interest in chemistry. The pre -test post- test quasi experimental design was adopted for the study. The population for the study comprised 1425 senior secondary two (SS2) chemistry students in Agbani Education Zone. A total of 189 SS2 chemistry students were drawn from three secondary schools selected in the zone through purposive sampling method. Two research questions and two hypotheses guided the study. In each of the schools used for the study, all the chemistry students in their intact classes were used. The experimental group was taught using concept mapping while the control group was taught using the lecture method of teaching. The treatment lasted for six weeks. The instrument for data collection was Chemistry Interest Scale (CIS). The CIS was validated by three experts. Before the treatment commenced, a pre- interest scale was administered and a reliability coefficient of 0.72 was established using Cronbach Alpha. The data collected was analyzed using analysis of co variance (ANCOVA). The result of the data analysis showed that there is a significant difference between the mean interest scores of students taught chemistry with concept mapping and those taught with lecture method. The study concludes by recommending that concept mapping method of teaching should be adopted in teaching of chemistry as this has helped to stimulate interest in chemistry which will help to enhance their achievement.

AbstractObjectiveClinical reasoning is an essential feature of health care practice; it is also a crucial ability for providing patient care of high quality. It has been identified that graduate nurses may lack the clinical reasoning skills to deliver safe and effective patient care. It is therefore of paramount importance to enhance nursing students' clinical reasoning ability. High-fidelity simulation (HFS) is proved to be an effective teaching and learning method, which may also have some advantages over other teaching methods.MethodsThe authors retrospectively reviewed the related literature, illustrated the application of high-fidelity simulation teaching method in nursing education, putting the focus on the use of it in teaching with clinical reasoning.ResultsThe application of high-fidelity simulation to nursing education can simulate the clinical situation, thus to create a safe, continuous and efficient learning environment for students, and it can effectively improve students' clinical reasoning ability.Conclusionshigh-fidelity simulation is effective for clinical reasoning teaching in nursing education. The extension of its application in China should be of great value. The relevant further study is suggested focusing on how to overcome its own limitations and have it better applied in nursing education in China.
