Since the first cases of COVID-19 were reported from China the disease became pandemic within a few months. The viral genome was sequenced soon after the outbreak of COVID-19 which enabled development of diagnostic tests and therapeutic options. As the knowledge of SARS-CoV-2 virology increased, many potential drugs appeared. At this moment (January 12th 2021), 4426 studies of COVID-19 are registered, and more than 2680 studies are investigating therapeutic options. This is a short narrative review of currently available evidence on pharmacological treatment of COVID-19.

Pregnancy is a time of many physiologic and systemic changes that may predispose women to new neurologic diseases or alter the course of preexisting disease. Management of neurologic diseases during pregnancy is complicated by the risks and benefits to both mother and fetus that must be weighed when diagnostic tests and therapeutic options are selected.

AbstractAs part of any plan to lift or ease the confinement restrictions that are in place in many different countries, there is an urgent need to increase the capacity of laboratory testing for SARS CoV-2. Detection of the viral genome through RT-qPCR is the golden standard for this test, however, the high demand of the materials and reagents needed to sample individuals, purify the viral RNA, and perform the RT-qPCR test has resulted in a worldwide shortage of several of these supplies. Here, we show that directly lysed saliva samples can serve as a suitable source for viral RNA detection that is cheaper and can be as efficient as the classical protocol that involves column purification of the viral RNA. In addition, it surpasses the need for swab sampling, decreases the risk of the healthcare personnel involved in this process, and accelerates the diagnostic procedure.

There have been a number of agents that have been tried for treatment of gastroparesis over the past 3 decades, with varying levels of success. Guidelines exist for the management of gastroparesis in adults; however, even though the cause of gastroparesis in children is similar to that in adults, no guidelines exist for treating pediatric gastroparesis as studies on the topic are limited. With what little information we have on pediatric gastroparesis, medications used in children's studies do not seem to demonstrate the same results as in adult patients with gastroparesis; thus, future studies of whether certain medications are effective for treating pediatric gastroparesis and at what dose still need to be conducted. Pharmacological treatment options for pediatric gastroparesis do not show a clear correlation of resolving or even maintaining gastroparesis-associated symptoms or disease state. This article reviews the available studies of drugs that have shown some efficacy, with an emphasis on pediatric studies.

Vision problems are common in individuals with mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI)/concussion. However, a global conceptualization of the diagnostic process remains incomplete and practitioner dependent. Thus, a comprehensive diagnostic test battery is proposed to assist in the management of these patients. This battery includes a range of basic clinical tests of a sensory and motor nature, with all having a clinical and scientific rationale. These tests have been used by the authors for many years, with good success, and furthermore they have been found to be clinically useful and insightful.
