Abstract The simulation and investigation of a 32×10 Gb/s WDM all–optical bidirectional hybrid communication system for outdoor applications is presented in this article via multidisciplinary softwares. In order to track the system condition, a strain sensor based on fiber Bragg grating (FBG) is integrated in–line with the fiber optic link (FO–link). Then, a free space optical link (FSO–link) with 4–channel is simulated to act backup or rescue to the FO–link in the event of disaster or bombing. The FO–link is working well until the strain reach to 180 µε, after that the FO–link has degraded. Therefore, an optical switch is incorporated in between these systems (FO–link & FSO–link) to turn–on the FSO–link which act as a backup system to FO–link and maintains the continuity of the data transmission. According to the hybrid link results, there is an efficient enhancement in the Q–factor as compared with the FO–link even when there is heavy rain.

AbstractThis paper presents the comparison of various modulation formats for 64×10 Gbps dense wavelength division multiplexing system using Raman–erbium-doped fiber amplifier optical amplifier with 100 GHz interval. We evaluate the suitability of various data formats like return-to-zero (RZ) raised cosine (RC), RZ rectangular (Rect), non-return-to-zero (NRZ) RC and NRZ-Rect for an optical transmission link. The results have been carried out by evaluating the value of quality factor, bit error rate (BER) and average opening of an eye. It is found that using NRZ-Rect data format, the signal can travel up to transmission length of 234 km with acceptable BER (1.10e

AbstractIn this paper, performance analysis of high-speed superdense wavelength-division-multiplexing (SDWDM) optical add–drop multiplexer (OADM) optical ring network for 6 nodes, 45 wavelengths having channel spacing of 0.2 nm on 300 km unidirectional nonlinear single-mode fiber ring of 10 Gbit/s has been reported. The performance optimization of the system by comparing different modulation formats has been reported on the basis of eye diagram and bit error rate (BER). It has been reported that CSRZ modulation format can achieve BER as better as e-24, which gives best performance. This paper also presents a study of performance degradation caused by the crosstalk and the effect of channel spacing on SWDM system.

Wavelength-division-multiplexing passive-optical-network (WDM-PON) has been recognized as a promising solution of the “last mile” access as well as multibroadband data services access for end users, and WDM-RoF-PON, which employs radio-over-fiber (RoF) technique in WDM-PON, is even a more attractive approach for future broadband fiber and wireless access for its strong availability of centralized multiservices transmission operation and its transparency for bandwidth and signal modulation formats. As for multiservices development in WDM-RoF-PON, various system designs have been reported and verified via simulation or experiment till now, and the scheme with multiservices transmitted in each single wavelength channel is believed as the one that has the highest bandwidth efficiency; however, the corresponding mathematical verification is still hard to be found in state-of-the-art literature. In this paper, system design and data transmission performance of a quintuple services integrated WDM-RoF-PON which jointly employs carrier multiplexing and orthogonal modulation techniques, have been theoretically analyzed and verified in detail; moreover, the system design has been duplicated and verified experimentally and the theory system of such WDM-RoF-PON scheme has thus been formed.

To exploit the unprecedented opportunities offered by the E-Service Applications, businesses and users alike would need a highly-available, reliable, and efficient telecommunication infrastructure. This chapter provides an insight into building the next-generation network infrastructure, that is, the All-Optical Internet. It also reveals the factors driving the convergence of the Internet Protocol (IP) and the Wavelength-Division Multiplexing (WDM) technology. The chapter discusses the dominant optical networks architectures in an attempt to show the evolution towards the ultimate all-optical packet-switching network. A special focus is given to the Optical Burst Switching (OBS) as a new emerging switching paradigm and a highly promising technology. OBS network architecture, burst assembly, signaling and reservation protocols, QoS support, and contention resolution techniques are presented. Furthermore, realistic suggestions and strategies to efficiently deploy OBS are given.
