The flight dynamics and handling qualities of any flexible aircraft can be analysed within the Cranfield Aircraft Accelerated Loads Model (CA2LM) framework. The modelling techniques and methods used to develop the framework are presented. The aerodynamic surfaces were modelled using the Modified Strip Theory (MST) and a state-space representation to model unsteady aerodynamics. With a modal approach, the structural flexibility and each mode’s influence on the structure deflections are analysed. To supplement the general overview of the framework equations of motion, models of atmosphere, gravity, fuselage and engines are introduced. The AX-1 general transport aircraft model is analysed as an example of the CA2LM framework capabilities. The results showed that, according to the Gibson Dropback criterion, the aircraft with no control system lacks the stability and its longitudinal handling qualities are unsatisfactory. Finally, the steps for future developments of the CA2LM framework are listed within conclusions.

A hybrid reduced-order model for the aeroelastic analysis of flexible subsonic wings with arbitrary planform is presented within a generalised quasi-analytical formulation, where a slender beam is considered as the linear structural dynamics model. A modified strip theory is proposed for modelling the unsteady aerodynamics of the wing in incompressible flow, where thin aerofoil theory is corrected by a higher-fidelity model in order to account for three-dimensional effects on both distribution and deficiency of the sectional air load. Given a unit angle of attack, approximate expressions for the lift decay and build-up are then adopted within a linear framework, where the two effects are separately calculated and later combined. Finally, a modal approach is employed to write the generalised equations of motion in state-space form. Numerical results were obtained and critically discussed for the aeroelastic stability analysis of a uniform rectangular wing, with respect to the relevant aerodynamic and structural parameters. The proposed hybrid model provides sound theoretical insights and is well suited as an efficient parametric reduced-order aeroelastic tool for the preliminary multidisciplinary design and optimisation of flexible wings in the subsonic regime.

An integrated mathematical model for the dynamics, actuation, and control of an active fluid/elastomeric tuned vibration isolator in a two mass system is presented. The derivation is based on the application of physical principles for mechanics, fluid continuity, and electromagnetic circuits. Improvement of the passive isolator performance is obtained with a feedback scheme consisting of a frequency shaped notch compensator in series with integral control of output acceleration and combined with proportional control of the fluid pressure in the isolator. The control is applied via an electromagnetic actuator for excitation of the fluid in the track connecting the two pressure chambers of the isolator. Closed loop system equations are transformed to a nondimensional state space representation and a key dimensionless parameter for isolator-actuator interaction is defined. A numerical example is presented to show the effect of actuator parameter selection on system damping, the performance improvement of the active over the passive isolator, the robustness of the control scheme to parameter variation, and the electrical power requirements for the actuator.

This paper presents the flight dynamics simulation and analysis of a tilt-rotor vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) aircraft on transition phase, that is conversion from vertical or hover to horizontal or level flight and vice versa. The model of the aircraft is derived from simplified equations of motion comprising the forces and moments working on the aircraft in the airplane's longitudinal plane of motion. This study focuses on the problem of the airplane's dynamic response during conversion phase, which gives an understanding about the flight characteristics of the vehicle. The understanding about the flight dynamics characteristics is important for the control system design phase. Some simulation results are given to provide better visualization about the behaviour of the tilt-rotor. The simulation results show that both transition phases are quite stable, although an improved stability can give better manoeuver and attitude handling. Improvement on the simulation model is also required to provide more accurate and realistic dynamic response of the vehicle.
