Multi‐objective analysis is a popular tool to solve many economic, managerial and construction problems. The objective of this research is to develop and implement a methodology for multi‐objective optimization of multi‐alternative decisions in road construction. After a rough overview of the articles dealing with the multi‐objective decision and assessment of road design alternatives described by discrete values, Multi‐Objective Optimization on the basis of the Ratio Analysis (MOORA) method was selected. This method focuses on a matrix of alternative responses on the objectives. A case study demonstrates the concept of multi‐objective optimization of road design alternatives and the best road design alternative is determined.

The definition of robustness in econometrics, the error term in a linear equation, was not only broadened, but in addition moved to the meaning of common language: from a cardinal to a qualitative one. These interpretations were tested by an application on the Facilities Sector in Lithuania. The application is multi‐objective: like costs, experience and effectiveness at the side of the contractors; quality, duration of the work and cost price at the side of the owners. These objectives having all different units the dimensionless ratios of the MOORA method avoids the difficulties of normalization. In a first part of MOORA these ratios were aggregated and in a second one they were used as distances to a reference point. The results of both parts control each other, a test on robustness. Additionally, MOORA shows a robust domination on all other methods of multi‐objective optimization. For the Facilities Sector in Lithuania, both parts of MOORA resulted in a comparable ranking. In this way a double check was made on the robustness of the results.

In early design phases, it is vital to be able to screen the design space for a set of promising design alternatives for further study. This article presents a method able to balance several objectives of different mathematical natures, with high impact on the design choices. The method (MOSART) handles multi-objective optimization for safety and reliability trade-offs. The article focuses on optimization problem approach and processing of results as a base for decision-making. The output of the optimization step is the selection of specific system elements obtaining the best balance between the targets. However, what is a good base for decision can easily transform into too much information and overloading of the decision-maker. To solve this potential issue, from a set of Pareto optimal solutions, a smaller sub-set of selected solutions are visualized and filtered out using preference levels of the objectives, yielding a solid base for decision-making and valuable information on potential solutions. Trends were observed regarding each system element and discussed while processing the results of the analysis, supporting the decision of one final best solution.

Abstract. In this article, a study on multi-objective optimization of the milling process is presented. CNC milling machine, cutting tool as TiAlN, experimental material as SCM400 steel and coolant as Caltex Aquatex 3180 oil have been used in the experiment. The objective of this study is to simultaneously ensure the minimum surface roughness and the maximum material removal rate (MRR). Taguchi method has been applied to design an experimental matrix with five input parameters, including coolant flow, coolant pressure, cutting velocity, feed rate, and cutting depth. Analysis of experimental results by Pareto chart has determined the effect of input parameters on output parameters. Moora method has been applied to determine the values of input parameters to simultaneously ensure the two criteria as mentioned above. Finally, the direction for further research has also been recommended in this study
