The spatio-temporal distribution of Achelous spinimanus demographic groups (juveniles, and adult males and females) and its relation with environmental factors was analyzed in the region of Ubatuba, southeastern Brazil. We performed the samplings from January to December 2000, at eight sites of different depths. A total of 402 specimens of A. spinimanus was captured. The lowest abundance of all demographic groups occurred in summer, while in winter and spring the abundance of adults was very high. Spatially, juveniles were found at 5 to 35m of depth, while adults at 15 to 40m, but were more abundant at 25m. The low abundance of all demographic groups during summer is probably due to the arrival of the South Atlantic Central Water in the region, which decreased the water temperature and salinity. These changes caused the migration of A. spinimanus to more sheltered places of the bay, possibly due to more favorable environmental conditions. The high abundance of the demographic groups at 25m of depth was due to its more heterogeneous sediment, and to avoid competition with other species more abundant in shallower areas. Therefore, the factors that modulate the distribution of A. spinimanus may differ depending on the ontogenetic phase.

Abstract: This study evaluated the relationships between environmental factors and the spatio-temporal distribution of H. pudibundus, with the hypothesis of differential occupation in coastal areas of southeastern Brazil. The samplings took place monthly in January-December 2000 period, along nine transects from 2 to 40 m of depth, in Ubatuba region, northern coast of São Paulo. We collected 1808 individuals of H. pudibundus. The highest abundance was recorded in winter in the transects 10-25 m deep. Abundance was positively correlated with organic matter content and texture sediment (phi values). With the retreat of the South Atlantic Central Water (SACW) in autumn and winter, the sediment swirls, suspending the detritivore and filter-feeding macrofauna, increasing the food availability. Sites characterized by finer sediment offer higher food availability, besides facilitating H. pudibundus burying behavior. Due to its opportunistic predatory behavior, this species feeds on a variety of organisms, including mollusks, annelids and foraminifera, which are preys more abundant in the studied area and in sediments of finer grain size.

Abstract To identify spatio-temporal distribution in Namibian Cape hake (M. paradoxus and M. capensis), incidental hake catch by the horse mackerel fleet and targeted catch by the hake fleet were analysed for the period 1999–2004. The targeted catch, 45 955 fishing days, came from hake fishery logbooks and the incidental catch, 24 689 trawls, from observers' sample data collected aboard vessels of the horse mackerel fleet. A strong negative relationship between monthly catch rates (cpue) and bycatch was observed, confirming that the seasonal change in catchability is caused by differences in hake vertical dispersion. The October trends were an exception: both cpue and bycatch were negative. A drop in catchability at different depths of the fishing grounds indicates that M. capensis migrates to shallower water (<200 m) at the peak of spawning. Although there was no significant relationship between annual catch rates and bycatch, probably because of the short length of the time-series, annual bycatch should not be discarded as an indicator of hake recruitment. The results highlight the potential informative component of bycatch in identifying population patterns that cannot be extracted from the targeted catch.

Spatial and temporal distribution of stream macroalgae in streams from southeastern Brazil were assessed for one year. The fluctuations in macroalgal species composition and environmental factors were monitored monthly. The region exhibit a tropical climate, with defined rainy and dry seasons. Nineteen species were found, with a predominance of Chlorophyta (52.7% of the species), followed by Cyanobacteria (26.3%), Ochrophyta and Rhodophyta (10.5% each). Scytonema arcangeli had the highest number of records (63.6%), while Mougeotia capucina occurred in all sampling sites. Community structure had low similarity (20-26%) and the environmental factors showed a weak contribution to the distribution pattern observed. Despite this, the light availability at the stream-bed seems to be a major influence on the macroalgal seasonal dynamics. We suggest that macroalgae communities are predominantly composed of rare species, and this could explain the lack of a clear spatial and temporal variation pattern of these organisms.

Background: Meningitis is a leading cause of death among patients living with HIV. There is no adequate tracking of the disease occurrence, distribution and etiologic agents among this risk group in Egypt, although the pattern could differ than that of the general population. Objectives: We aimed to describe the spatio-temporal distribution of meningitis in HIV patients in a region of Northern Egypt over an 18-years period (2000-2018). Methods: We conducted a retrospective study of 352 adults HIV patients admitted to a tertiary care fever hospital with neurological manifestations suggesting meningitis. We retrieved from inpatient records all data relevant to patient demographics, clinical presentation, diagnostic work-up, results of laboratory investigations (CSF, blood, imaging), definitive diagnosis, and in-hospital mortality. Results: The overall trend over 2 decades showed fluctuating incidence of meningitis in HIV infected patients and increasingly spread into rural areas, with a uniform circulation among adult males. Cryptococcal meningitis was the most common etiologic agent (26.9%) and was associated with worse outcomes. Focal neurological deficit (38.5%), cranial nerve involvement (48.1%) were common features in TB Meningitis. The mortality was high (56.8%) and was significantly associate with low CD4+ count, advanced AIDs clinical stage and the presence of co-morbidities. Conclusion: Despite the availability of cART, meningitis particularly cryptococcal is common in HIV/AIDS population in Egypt. Continued efforts are desperately needed to improve outcomes of HIV-infected patients.
