The Malacology Collection of the Museo de La Plata contains more 13,000 lots from various regions of Argentina and other South American countries. The Collection also includes 511 type lots. Among the oldest type specimens are a large series of marine gastropod from Patagonia which were studied by Fernando Lahille in 1895. He was one of the first’s naturalists of the Museo de La Plata, and there between 1893 and 1899, he made several studies in zoology. During that time, he described three species and forty varieties of Volutidae. Herein, we compare Lahille’s type specimens, label data, number, and specimen information to the original descriptions and illustrations of these taxa. Each taxon has been photographed in multiple views. This historic type material is entirely composed of shells. This work is the first of a series of photographic catalogues of type material from the Malacology Collection of the Invertebrate Division of Museo de La Plata.

The present contribution deals with the type and non-type material of the species of Aegla (Decapoda: Anomura: Aeglidae) deposited in the Invertebrate Collection of Museo de La Plata, Argentina. One hundred and thirty-four lots are included, of which 10 lots are type specimens. The material examined includes 11 of the 13 species known from Argentina. Among the studied lots, those examined by Ringuelet (1948, 1960) and by Bond-Buckup & Buckup (1994) stand out. Also, several lots from different regions of Argentina were identified. Type specimens examined were compared with the original descriptions; photographs of the specimens are given in the present report. For each lot the following information is provided: georeferenced locality of collection, collector and collecting date, bibliographical references, category, number of collection according to the rules of the Museo de La Plata, label data (precise transcription), remarks and map of the locations.

Type material of 42 species from 15 genera of Membracidae is housed at the Entomology Division of the Facultad de Ciencias Naturales y Museo of La Plata National University, collected mainly in Argentina (21) but also in Uruguay (8), Bolivia (3), Brazil (10), Ecuador (1) and Venezuela (1). The types listed herein correspond to species described by G. S. de Andrade (3 spp.), C. Berg (12 spp.), F. W. Goding (1 sp.), A. M. Marino de Remes Lenicov (25 spp), and S. H. McKamey (1 sp.). The collection contains 230 type specimens. Comparison of their original descriptions with the label information supports the existence of 20 holotypes, 13 allotypes, 156 paratypes, 5 lectotypes, 15 paralectotypes and 21 syntypes. Lectotype and paralectotypes of Cyphonia ancoralis Berg, Melusina rugifrons Berg, Smiliorhachis proxima Berg are designated, as well as syntypes of Acutalis variabilis Berg, Cyphonia bonaeriensis Berg, Cyphonia colenophora Berg, Darnis amangosi Berg, Darnis (Stictipelta) luisae Berg, Hebetica arechavaletae Goding, Pyranthe acaciae Berg and P. frustatoria Berg. The following information is given for each species: original names of the species, bibliographic references, type category, number of specimens, gender, Museo de La Plata code numbers, and transcription of data from labels (country, province, locality, date of collection, collector’s name, and hosts). Information about subsequent nomenclatural changes with corresponding references, the state of preservation of the specimens in each series and pictures of each Berg species is also provided.

Type material of 11 species from seven genera of Cercopoidea is housed at the Entomology Division of the Facultad de Ciencias Naturales y Museo, Universidad Nacional de La Plata. AbstractWe examined the type material of the extinct tortoise species Geochelone atlantica López-Jurado, Mateo and García-Márquez, 1998 from Sal Island, Cape Verde, using aDNA approaches and AMS radiocarbon dating. High-quality mitochondrial genomes obtained from the three type specimens support that all type material belongs to the same individual. In phylogenetic analyses using mitochondrial genomes of all species groups and genera of extant and some recently extinct tortoises, the type material clusters within the extant South American red-footed tortoise Chelonoidis carbonarius (Spix, 1824). Our radiocarbon date indicates that the tortoise from which the type series of G. atlantica originates was still alive during 1962 and 1974. These results provide firm evidence that the type material of G. atlantica does not belong to the Quaternary tortoise bones excavated on Sal Island in the 1930s, as originally thought. Thus, the extinct tortoise species remains unstudied and lacks a scientific name, and the name G. atlantica has to be relegated into the synonymy of C. carbonarius. The circumstances that led to this confusion currently cannot be disentangled.

We examined the type material of 15 species of Naupactus Dejean and related genera (Curculionidae: Entiminae), most of them described by Alphonse Hustache (Museum National d’Histoire Naturelle, Paris) and Carl Boheman (Naturhistoriska Riksmuseet, Stockholm). The information associated with the types was compared with the original descriptions, and large series of specimens were examined in order to analyze the variation of each species throughout its range (sexual dimorphism, other kinds of polymorphism or geographic variation). Based on the results of this study we establish seven new combinations, one new placement and nine new synonymies, we make 21 lectotype designations and provide three new country and state records. Alceis curtus (Boh.), Lanterius leucophaeus (Boh.), L. sparsus (Boh.), L. sellatus (Boh.), Parapantomorus carinirostris (Hust.), Symmathetes signatus (Blanchard) and Teratopactus acerbus (Boh.) are new combinations and T. sulphureoviridis Hust. is a new placement. The following names are senior synonyms of those between parentheses: Lanterius inermis (Hust.) (syn. Macrostylus ocellatus Lanteri); Naupactus auricinctus Boh. (syn. N. ruficornis Boh.); N. bridgesii G.R. Waterhouse (syn. N. angulithorax Hust.); N. condecoratus Boh. (syn. N. bosqi Hust.); N. cyphoides (Heller) (syn. N. calamuchitanensis Hust., N. viridinitens Hust, N. viridulus Hust.); N. peregrinus (Buchanan) (syn. N. brevicrinitus Hust.); and Trichonaupactus densior Hust. (syn. T. rexus Hust.). For each species we provide the following information: synonyms, available data on type specimens (sex, body length, geographic location, kind of type, and repository), complete geographic distribution, pictures of types or specimens compared with types, an explanation about the reasons that justify the nomenclatural acts.

A catalogue of type specimens of the Helminthological Collection of the División Zoología Invertebrados, of Museo deLa Plata (FCNyM-UNLP), Argentina, is presented. It includes Platyhelmithes, Nematoda, Nematomorpha and Acan-thocephala. The collection comprises type lots for 217 species: 90 nematodes, 50 digeneans, 28 Nematomorpha, 19 mono-geneans, 17 turbellarians, 8 cestodes and 5 acanthocephalans. Specific names are listed systematically, followed by type host, type locality, specimens, collection number and bibliographic reference.

AbstractA new nematode species Dichelyne (Cucullanellus) sciaenidicola sp. nov. is described based on specimens collected from the Whitemouth croaker Micropogonias furnieri (Desmarest) and the Argentine croaker Umbrina canosai Berg, from coastal waters of Argentina and Brazil. These nematodes were firstly identified as D. (C.) elongatus (Törnquist, 1931), a commonly reported species from M. furnieri in South American Atlantic waters. However, other species of Dichelyne have so far been reported from this host in the same area, namely D. (C.) rodriguesi (Pinto, Fábio et Noronha, 1970), D. (C.) amaruincai (Freitas, Vicente et Ibañez, 1969) and D. (Dichelyne) micropogonii Pereira et Costa, 1996. A careful re-examination of these parasites, as well as of type specimens of all species reported from M. furnieri, revealed that these nematodes represented a new species. The new species is distinguished from most of its congeners by having papillae 5–7 and 9 forming a subventral line close to cloaca, this feature is shared with other 6 species [D. (C.) dichelyneformis (Szidat, 1950), D. (C.) fraseri (Baylis, 1929), D. (C.) abbreviatus (Rudolphi, 1819), D. (C.) adriaticus (Törnquist, 1931), D. (C.) minutus (Rudolphi, 1819) and D. (C.) mariajuliae Alarcos, Timi, Etchegoin et Sardella, 2006)], which are readily distinguished by their body size, spicules length, distribution patterns of other papillae and position of the excretory pore and deirids. Also, D. (C.) elongatus from Umbrina canariensis (Valenciennes) from West Africa is established as a new species Dichelyne (Cucullanellus) yvonnecampanae sp. nov.; D. (C.) amaruincai from Pacific waters is considered as a valid species, D. (D.) micropogonii is regarded as species inquirendae and D. (C.) rodriguesi is identified as Cucullanus sp.

The Carcinological Collection of División Zoología Invertebrados, Museo de La Plata (FCNyM-UNLP) includes of 110 type lots of 42 species. A list of types of the crustacean orders Anostraca (8 species), Diplostraca (5 species), Arguloida (3 species), Cyclopoida (1 species), Poecilostomatoida (8 species), Siphonostomatoida (2 species), Podocopida (4 species), Amphipoda (2 species), Isopoda (2 species), Mysida (2 species) and Decapoda (5 species) is presented. Species names are listed in systematical order, including type locality, collection number, current taxonomic status and original bibliographic reference. For parasite and commensal species, type host and site of infection are also provided.

Paepalanthus decorus was described by Delia Abbiatti from a single collection of individuals made by Carlos Luis Spegazzini in Uruguaiana, Rio Grande do Sul state, Brazil, deposited at the La Plata Museum. The species is known only from the type specimens, which were unusual for being collected far to the south of the distribution of the other species included in P. sect. Diphyomene. In recent nomenclatural treatments for P. sect. Diphyomene, P. decorus was disregarded, remaining known only from its original publication. Here, we critically evaluate the protologue, type specimens, and the vegetative and floral morphology of this species. As a result, we propose its synonymization under P. flaccidus. A detailed comparison of these species is provided, along with comments on typification, with a lectotype designated for P. flaccidus.
