Disasters cause considerable damage around the world every year. The built environment is significantly affected by disasters. Whilst the built environment is expected to withstand such occurrences, the construction industry is expected to play a pivotal role in reconstruction of damaged property and infrastructure. Such responses call for technological and managerial innovation. Therefore it is important that construction professionals receive continuous skill development to respond to disaster situations in order to build a disaster resilient built environment. Due to the complexities involved in and due to peculiar nature of disaster situations, lifelong learning is considered as an appropriate way of ensuring continuous education to the various stakeholders of disaster management. The paper reports preliminary findings from a European Commission funded research project aimed at modernising the higher education institutes to support lifelong learning in the built environment. The paper reports the key findings from the literature review and case study on disaster management, emphasising the role of lifelong learning in disaster management education. Empirical data collected as part of the workshop suggest that providing disaster management education as a degree programme is ineffective due to the complexity and multi-disciplinary nature of the subject. Further, the lack of involvement with the industry and the lack of research and development activities on disaster management by built environment professionals act as hindrance to effective disaster management education. In addressing the shortcomings on the existing approaches of disaster management education, this paper concludes that lifelong learning as the most appropriate approach to educate built environment professional in the context of disaster management.

Teletandem is a virtual context of learning languages based on principles of autonomy and reciprocity in which two peers collaborate to learn the language of each other. Usually, the interactions occur in institutional groups mediated by a professor or a graduate student. This paper aims to describe the role of a  mediator and the process of mediation in Portuguese and Spanish Teletandem. Previous studies have analyzed how the Teletandem practice in the context of very close languages, such as Portuguese and Spanish, presents some inherent specificity related to the natural possibility of certain intercommunication between the interactants (Ramos, Carvalho, & Messias, 2013; Silva-Oyama,2010). In this case, it is necessary to observe the process of mediation more closely and consider the relevance of cultural and linguistic aspects. The theoretical assumptions that guide our description and discussion are based onsociocultural theory for second language learning and assume that the learning process happens through interactions between people and the environment in a cooperative manner (Vygotsky, 1978). The methodological perspective thatanchors this study is grounded theory (Charmaz, 2006), which is based on a systematic collection of data that, after analysis, originate concepts. The reflection corroborates the fact that the development of the process depends on the involvement of the mediator in different roles and suggests that the principles of autonomy and reciprocity are directly related to the mediation process and can contribute to an effective collaborative context of language learning.

Modern agro-industrial and food industry enterprises require continuous improvement of management systems. The complexity and specificity of the agro-industrial production determine the approaches and management methods, which have to be innovative. The research objective was to examine the role of innovation in controlling, as well as innovative technologies of controlling that can improve management efficiency of food industry enterprises. The research was based on the neosystemic approach. This fundamental method of scientific knowledge was applied to all aspects of the innovative fundamental theory of agroindustrial complex organizations, the role of innovation in the controlling system, and innovative controlling technologies. According to the neosystemic approach, the controlling system was considered as a single system that consists of initial subsystems and uses knowledge and achievements of various fields of science to solve specific problems. As controlling implements the management process at agricultural enterprises, it means that relevant innovations should be developed in the field of agricultural enterprise management. To understand the role of innovation in the controlling system, the authors introduced the concept of ‘managerial innovation’. The choice of specific areas of managerial innovation in controlling should be based on the analysis of the external and internal environment, as well as on the strategic goals and objectives of the specific agricultural enterprise. In terms of its role and functionality, the controlling system is central to the management of the enterprise and, at the same time, has strong relationships with other systems and subsystems. Therefore, in order to select innovative technologies to be used in controlling, it is necessary to designate a range of tasks solved by the main elements of controlling. The paper describes the tasks of the main elements of controlling. The authors suggest innovative management technologies that can be used in controlling in the context of the main management functions such as planning, accounting, monitoring, and analysis. The approach takes into account the system of goal setting and the decision-making process in food industry. Thus, the main task of the modern controlling system is to form management technologies that use innovation as an element of the management cycle. Innovative technologies can be used in controlling both to achieve a strategic goal and to move to a new level of enterprise development.

According to the traditional perspective the maintenance function is counted as a secondary activity consuming human and financial resources, which is why many companies, use as maintenance strategy for several years, the subcontracting of maintenance services to specialized companies. However, the need to perform maintenance operations on increasingly complex systems requires access to several distinct types of skills that small and medium-sized firms specialized in maintenance services generally do not have. This paper aims to illustrate the role of the Six Sigma Scorecard approach as a management tool for improving quality in service provided in a collaborative context. The article begins by discussing the principles of the Six Sigma and the Balanced Scorecard backgrounds. It is then discussed how the two methodologies can be combined as a management tool of maintenance activities. Finally, it is discussed how this approach can be applied in the assessment of maintenance activities in the context of a collaborative ecosystem.
