Wider exploitation of computer integrated manufacturing (CIM) in shipbuilding is inevitable as yards seek continuing improvements in productivity and quality to sharpen competitiveness. The buzz word CIM has been used in many ways through the years. The correct interpretation may be the integration of all computer systems directly supporting the definition and production of the ship. This comprises CAD and also administrative systems such as planning and material control programs. CIM in this paper is defined as optimal utilization of CAD data and planning data in shop floor production, including feedback to the planning system and accumulation of quality data. The paper defines the state-of-the-art of CIM solutions at shipyards, and outlines a case study of one larger CIM installation. The case presented shows the structure of one installed system, and outlines the experience gained through planning, preparation and installation of the system. The case also includes cost budgets for the installation, including necessary training for planners and operators. Important organizational issues when planning the structure of CIM based production is described in the case. Terms such as Central Work Preparation and Local Work Preparation are introduced. The tasks performed in each area that add value to the CIM data files are described. At the end of the paper, the authors have outlined some future thoughts on further developments of CIM at shipyards. Important issues are, e.g., on-line production simulation systems capable of constantly updating the planning system in order to ensure the highest possible productivity and to support just in time (JIT) philosophies in all areas of the production.

In order to improve production quality and efficiency of cigarette trademark, new type reel cigarette trademark on soft package adopts production mode of reel to reel, which becomes the development trend. This technique makes higher requirements on double-position connection lettering and detection technology of holographic / concave and protruding lettering. This experiment uses on-line quality examination system to conduct the relevant examinations on double-position lettering of holographic / protruding lettering of cigarette packet and makes the analysis. The experiment shows that: holographic lettering quality varies with the amount of lettering and lettering speed. For protruding lettering unit, electrified aluminium in vertical direction has a better result than that in horizontal direction. This study lays a foundation for normal production of machine and further quality inspection after lettering.

Thermal control is a key issue for injection moulding process due to its effects on production quality and rate. In this study, an on-line thermal control strategy is provided for effective thermal management in plastic injection moulding process. The strategy covers for methods in determining sensor locations as a prerequisite step for modeling and control, identifying a thermal dynamic model of a mould with uncertainties and designing a cavity wall temperature controller. A verification of the designed controller’s performance is carried out from the viewpoints of accuracy in on-line temperature tacking and response time under different injection moulding process with various cycle-times.

Photographic developing machine has been widely used in printing business nowadays. In this paper, a developing expert system (DES) was built. The production knowledge representation, data-directed search control and context avoiding mechanism were designed in DES. DES can give appropriate developing time and temperature according to developer formulation, the type of negative and developing quality needed. On the basis of actual temperature, the developing time can be modified by DES on line in order to ensure the production quality. Experimental results show that the developing machine controlled by DES can develop negatives automatically with appropriate time and temperature.
