E-Learning and M-Learning

This research explores the relationship between e-learning and m-learning by investigating distance education students’ use of a learning management system, “Interact,” for virtual team work. The paper explores their experience of online collaborative group assignments in the subject “Information Management in Organisations.” International and local students were grouped. Each group undertook a case study project to propose solutions for identified problems in their chosen organisations. Students developed their assignment in wikis and used various tools for communication and document storage. An anonymous web-based survey was conducted after students completed the group assessment. The results reflected a wide range of factors including technology use, working with students from a different country, and challenges they faced completing group assessment online. Their feedback on their e-learning experience indicated the need for m-learning to address their concerns. The findings indicate a need for m-learning to support e-learning further, which could significantly improve the facilitation of online collaborative group assignments.

This chapter makes a case for the importance of preparing e-teachers by requiring them to have an experience as an e-learner. The chapter begins with a review of the challenges and criticisms of e-learning. Some of the literature indicates that e-learners have been dissatisfied with their learning experiences. Some academics have concerns about the rigour of courses offered through e-learning. The literature of academic development and e-learning is used to link theory with practice. The chapter provides examples of best practice in the preparation of academic staff for e-teaching. Two case studies of lived examples of e-teaching preparation are provided from a North American perspective. Future research directions are outlined, with research questions to be explored regarding the link between the preparation of eteachers through e-learning and the quality of the e-learning experience for students.

According to several forecasts given by Gartner Group or International Data Corporation, for example, e-learning as a new buzzword for Web-based education and its commercialization seems to be a growing market in the digital economy. This case study will analyze this new and dynamic e-learning market and the corresponding changes on the education market. A framework of the different education models that have already developed on the e-learning market will be introduced and their benefits and risks discussed. Several cases demonstrate the new e-learning models in action. Therefore, this contribution consists of several smaller cases that can be used for getting an overview of the e-learning market and for a discussion about e-learning as a promising e-commerce application on the Internet.

Practice nurses in Australia are now funded to facilitate chronic condition management, including self-management support. Chronic disease management requires an established rapport, support and proactivity between general practitioners, patients and the practice nurses. To achieve this, training in shared decision making is needed. e-Learning supports delivery and achievement of such policy outcomes, service improvements and skill development. However, e-learning effectiveness for health care professionals’ is determined by several organisational, economic, pedagogical and individual factors, with positive e-learning experience linked closely to various supports. This paper reinforces previous studies showing nurses’ expanding role across general practice teams and reports on some of the challenges of e-learning. Merely providing practice nurses with necessary information via web-based learning systems does not ensure successful learning or progress toward improving health outcomes for patients.

In an era of globalization, economies over the world have become increasingly international and competitive. According to Alahuhta et al (2005), the last three decade has seen a massive revolution in technology use at both individual and organizations level with several organizations replacing the manual system of operation with modern technologies and computer powered machines. Acheampong, et al (2017) explain that three decades ago it was a dream to conceive that at a point in time all of the world’s knowledge could be put on a single world wide web and browsed by people from different parts of the world for free. These are the realities of the contemporary business place which Casey & Wilson-Evered (2012) explained has been facilitated by the advances in technology and globalization. According to Zaremohzzabieh, et al (2014), e-commerce platform appeared along with the development of internet and the necessities of ventures has given a web-based exchanging spot to customers and suppliers. It is a virtual system for purchasers and merchants, utilizing computer programming technology to coordinate assets on the web and accomplish the objective of community program (Ruzzier, AntonciC, Hisrich, & Konecnik, 2007). E-commerce platform gives all members equivalent and public information location of many services. Merchants can disseminate product information on e-commerce platforms, while purchasers can get a wide range of information without going outside (Strauss, 2016). As a new trend in the economic development and a new pattern of future business advancement, e-commerce platform plays a critical part with many attributes i.e. third party, service nature, neutrality and integration (Ling, et al, 2010).

User learning experience may be considered as one of the prominent factors shaping the adoption of web-based systems. Web-based learners interfacing with large amounts of information the rationale is to deduce the effect in the current web-based task environment. Understanding Web-based learner perception on the basis of the prior experience with information may provide insights into what constitutes in driving those perceptions and their effect in the current and future web-based learning process. The paper demonstrates theoretical context of user learning experience with information and proceeds in an attempt to distinguish factors in using web-based systems.

In this chapter, we introduce two existing web-based, e-learning approaches, and examine economic and social aspects of their usage in society. Specifically, we briefly introduce an e-learning initiative in Singapore. Secondly, we give a detailed description of a case study regarding the experiment called “Digital Engineering Campus,” which is an NGO initiative to provide supplementary educational facilities for engineering colleges in India. Considering the economic as well as social benefits, using our detailed case-study of Digital Engineering Campus, we argue that developing countries like India have tremendous growth potential in web-based education. Further, the experiences of developed countries with web-based education will prove to be highly beneficial for developing countries like India.

This case study discusses a model of evaluating a group of adult students learning resulting from using an online social constructivist tool. The study is based on using a discussion board for sharing and co-constructing knowledge. Learning through social interactions and critical thinking is increasingly considered an essential teaching approach and especially for adult students. This approach promotes active learning and leads to better understanding of the subject matter. Online interaction evidently promotes critical thinking, problem solving, and knowledge construction. The literature provides a large set of approaches for evaluating discussion boards. However, their uses are not easily adoptable by faculty who are primarily interested in measuring the quality of online discussion. The authors contend that faculty should not adhere to a single measure but rather to be experiential and to develop their own models of evaluation of the students’ online learning experience. This case study discusses our own model for understanding the students’ learning experience and the authors’ approach to assess an individual’s level of engagement in critical thinking. The study contributes to the body of knowledge on adopting e-learning technologies at institutions in the Arab World for teaching adult students.
