The world has experienced an unprecedented growth in information and communication technologies (ICT) through the widespread use of personal computers, Internet, and mobile phones. The objectives of this chapter are to examine trends in ICT use in agriculture, identify key success factors for ICT utilization in agriculture, and investigate the implications of ICT-enabled value chains for the agribusiness industry. The chapter describes the strategic role of ICT in the development of both e-commerce and mobile commerce in agriculture globally. The chapter identifies the leading areas of ICT use in agriculture and agribusinesses as input procurement, production, marketing, food traceability, and financial service delivery. Producers are increasingly seeking ways to add value to their businesses by integrating ICT in the value chain. Similarly, consumers are becoming more knowledgeable about how they could use ICT to articulate their preferences. The chapter discusses key success factors for ICT applications affecting both the internal and external environment of agribusiness firms. The chapter concludes by drawing implications for ICT use in agriculture and agribusiness value chains.

Challenged to multiple pressures, the administration developed many initiatives aimed at modernizing its practices and offering the citizen customer (Thomas, 1999) a faster and better-quality service (OECD, 1996). From this perspective, the use of information and communication technologies (ICTs) is presented as an essential means of modernization (Poullet & Van Bastelaer, 1999). However, the declarations of intent sometime seem to be difficult to translate into efficient projects integrated in civil servants’ daily work practices. A lot of case studies focus on best practices or analyze the reasons of failure of several e-government projects. There are fewer studies that position upstream and try to identify the key success factors of the introduction of ICTs into public services regarding their acceptance and appropriation by internal users.

AbstractInsufficient access to markets, limited financial transactions, and a lack of information and knowledge often restrict opportunities for small-scale farmers to link up with commercial value chains in Sub-Saharan Africa. Advances in information and communication technologies (ICTs), especially mobile phones and the internet, have expanded the possibility to communicate across geographical distances and to integrate into commercial value chains. By using a novel combination of conceptual considerations on ICTs, value chains, and relational proximity, this paper assesses: 1. How the use of ICTs affects the integration of small-scale farmers into the value chains (by analysing the information and knowledge flow, the financial and market transactions) and 2. to what extent the use of ICTs is on the other side influenced by the value chain context (i.e. the structure and coordination of the chain and the relational proximity between farmer and buyer). Our findings showed that even simple ICTs (phones) can lead to improvements for farmers to integrate into the chain as they facilitate simple information and complex knowledge flow, financial transactions, and market access, even though a greater structural transformation was absent. However, our results showed that the extent of the effects depends on the context in the value chains, in particular their structure, coordination, and the relational proximity between the actors. In this way, this paper contributes to the conceptual discussions on information and communication for development (ICT4D) and the dynamics in value chains.

Background: The higher education sector is making a conscious effort to integrate information and communication technologies (ICTs) into the academe with a view to improving teaching, learning and access to knowledge. Unfortunately, the use of ICTs in teaching by academics in Nigerian universities is far below expectation. Objectives: The aim of this article was to report on a study that examined the underlying factors determining the use of ICTs in teaching by academics in private and public universities in Nigeria by using the unified theory of acceptance and use of technology (UTAUT) as a theoretical lens.Method: A mixed method approach involving the use of questionnaires and semi-structured interviews was adopted for the study. Data were collected from 267 academics in 3 faculties and 10 key informants who were in managerial positions at the University of Ibadan and Covenant University. Results: Regression analyses indicated that only facilitating conditions (FCs) (β = −0.345, t = −3.221, p = 0.002) have significant influence on the use of ICT in teaching at the University of Ibadan. However, both effort expectancy (EE) (β = 0.380, t = 3.116, p = 0.003) and FCs (β = −0.281, t = −2.327, p = 0.023) have significant influence on the use of ICT by academics in Covenant University. The qualitative study explicates these factors: institutional policy, technological infrastructure, simplicity of use, fund and organisational support as success factors for ICT use in teaching. Further findings revealed that age had an effect on EE and FCs amongst academics at the University of Ibadan, but out of all the demographic factors, age emerged as the only variable that had an effect on social influence amongst academics in Covenant University. Conclusion: The study concludes that stakeholders in higher institutions should give adequate attention to these underlying factors: FCs and EE for optimal success of ICT use in teaching. The findings of this study have far-reaching implications for policy makers within the educational environs and intervention strategies on the part of the university stakeholders in supporting ICT use in teaching.

There are many different benefits that a government can obtain from encouraging the use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) in its public sector delivery frameworks. Utilization of ICTs as a socio-economic stimulant has long been recognized by governments the world over. Electronic government utilizes ICTs to provide all the access to a wide range of public services. Today, different government departments and/or units at all levels of the governance hierarchy respond to millions of citizen demands electronically. The rising interest of many stakeholders in e-Government calls for a conceptual model that will guide implementation regardless of context. This chapter argues that several key success factors are appropriate and need to be considered for successful e-Government implementation. About one hundred e-Government Websites were examined upon those key success factors. Sixty-one university students took part in this investigation. Using t-test, the chapter investigates the appropriateness of the proposed model.

Some state, national, and local governments around the world have long been playing active roles in the use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) to stimulate economic development. Electronic government (e-Government) utilizes information technology (IT) to provide the necessary the access to a wide range of public services. Governments see IT as a way to improve the quality of life of their citizens. Today, governments at all levels of the governance hierarchy respond to millions of citizen demands electronically. Many public organizations are implementing e-Government projects. There is a need to put forward a conceptual model focusing on steps towards implementing more successful e-Government projects. This exploratory paper argues that several key success factors are appropriate for e-Government implementation. About twelve e-Government websites were examined using the identified key success factors. This chapter proposes a conceptual model for a better implementation of electronic government especially in the developing world context.

This paper focuses primarily on the role of Email marketing and E-commerce. Email marketing is one of the most modern means and marketing methods in the world. The modern information and communication technologies also facilitate the circulation and sending of electronic messages with the highest quality and accuracy. In addition, Email marketing campaigns help to increase the sale of products in electronic shops and to target customers efficiently and legally. However, despite the benefits of Email marketing, there are also many negatives that constitute a real obstacle to promotion and marketing via this messaging system. This study focuses on discussing the most important advantages and disadvantages of Email marketing and analyzing the success factors of this marketing by avoiding these disadvantages and benefiting all these advantages.
