A Social Survey on How the Economic Crisis Affects Peoples' Attitudes towards Environmental Subjects

This chapter presents a social survey regarding environmental subjects conducted in Greece. It is a well-known fact that Greece is suffering from an Economic Crisis. This crisis coincides with the time that Greece is supposed to take measures for Environmental Protection. During the last decade, the authors’ laboratory has been conducting social surveys regarding peoples’ attitudes towards the environmental issues and the application of Renewable Energy Sources (RES). The research described aims to represent the way peoples' attitudes and opinions towards environmental subjects and the use of RES are affected by the Economic Crisis and a rather dystopian future. How important are the environmental issues considered to be when people feel their everyday life is threatened? This subject is approached through a survey.

The paper presents the analysis of different types of impact the hydroelectric power plants’ reservoirs could make on the environment. Hydroelectric power plants (HPP) produce ecologically safe energy and correspond to the modern striving for sustainability because they are operated on renewable energy sources. At the same time they can provoke various potential dangers for the environment. The objective of the investigation is to demonstrate the interrelation between the type and structure of a hydroelectric power plant and the way its reservoir may impact on the nature surrounding the plant. These effects may be direct and indirect, positive and negative and vary from insignificant that can be easily fixed to those that are irreversible and catastrophic. The latter should be taken into account during the design of HPP.

The hybrid system of solar energy and geothermal heat pump (GHP) can put the advantages of the two renewable energy sources together and make up the deficiencies of each other. The concept and the development of the hybrid system are introduced; the work principle and the operational mode of the system are analyzed. Through the introduction of two instances, this paper analyzes the way of the system in buildings and the saving potential applying the hybrid system.

Every type of energy utilization for electricity generation has environmental consequences. The main consequences of burning fossil fuels and of nuclear power are well-known. Renewable energy sources (wind, solar, biomass, hydroelectric, geothermal, etc.) are generally thought of as harmless, but this doesn’t mean they have no environmental consequences at all. Most of them have a significant aesthetic impact and require large areas of land. Some also have a significant impact on the eco-system (birds, fishes, etc.). This paper summarizes the environmental issues caused by all kinds of renewable energy sources.

This article analyzes the effects of financial incentives implemented in Montenegro, with the aim of increasing the exploitation rate of renewable energy sources on the consumption side. Those incentives were mostly focused on households. They made it easier to obtain the funds for installing the equipment necessary for the use of solar energy and biomass, as the main energy sources, for the needs of individual households. The results show that the implemented measures had smaller effects than expected and that the interest of inhabitants for the use of renewable energy sources is still at low level. The reason for such a situation is an insufficiently developed awareness of their importance and lack of information about the way that the systems used for their exploitation work and all the benefits that those systems offer. Occasional promotional activities, carried out during the implementation of the measures mentioned above, weren’t sufficiently effective. Therefore, a continuous effort must be invested in the forthcoming period, in order to inform and educate citizens, so that the energy potentials of Montenegro could be used in a right way.

Owing to factors such as high living standards and digitalization, energy use is growing. However, the proportion of renewable energy sources is also rising in all energy consumption. Given this use of renewable energy, global warming and environmental issues are still rising. Fossil-based energy species are more polluting and resource-stricken than others. Studies on environmental pollution show that fossil-based energies are the most important pollutants. Fossil-based energy source is still the most consumed type of energy. Besides, the renewable energy sources’ consumption is very low. Therefore, it is important to increase the use of renewable energy, which creates cleaner and less emissions. Buildings should have the right clean energy use incentives. The needs such as heating, refrigeration, and lighting can be met by renewable energy. This research aims to explore and demonstrate how renewable energy can profit when fulfilling public building functions. Through using both conventional methods and creative methods together, the rate of use of renewable resources such as solar, wind, and geothermal resources in buildings can be increased. Therefore, major contributions to reducing the environmental issues caused by energy consumption can be made.
