Effect of Urban Computing on the Public's Perception of Place, Community, and Infrastructure

The work presented in this chapter delineates the longitudinal experience of deploying an urban computing system that enables citizens to share and interact with digital content about the urban environment and experiences of people with it. It is part of an emerging and novel aspect of urban computing that expands research beyond simple optimisations of city functions towards a social and cultural approach that seeks to orchestrate complex socio-technical ensembles. Offering Collective City Memory as a service to citizens and enabling them to interact with it via diverse novel interfaces has uncovered the implications for city life that the introduction of urban computing brings such as the redefinition of spatial and temporal proximity and the effects on the perception of city space, fostering of social interactions, contribution to shared resources and participation in collective efforts.

Cloud computing is being heavily used for implementing different kinds of applications. Many of the client applications are being migrated to cloud for the reasons of cost and elasticity. Cloud computing is generally implemented on distributing computing wherein the Physical servers are heavily distributed considering both hardware and software, the connectivity among which is established through Internet. The cloud computing systems as such have many physical servers which contain many resources. The resources can be made to be shared among many users who are the tenants to the cloud computing system. The resources can be virtualized so as to provide shared resources to the clients. Scheduling is one of the most important task of a cloud computing system which is concerned with task scheduling, resource scheduling and scheduling Virtual Machin Migration. It is important to understand the issue of scheduling within a cloud computing system more in-depth so that any improvements with reference to scheduling can be investigated and implemented. For carrying in depth research, an OPEN source based cloud computing system is needed. OPEN STACK is one such OPEN source based cloud computing system that can be considered for experimenting the research findings that are related to cloud computing system. In this paper an overview on the way the Scheduling aspect per say has been implemented within OPEN STACK cloud computing system

Background: Sediment deposition in the urban environment affects aesthetic, economic, and other aspects of city life, and through re-suspension of dust, may pose serious risks to human health. Proper environmental management requires further understanding of natural and anthropogenic factors influencing the sedimentation processes in urbanized catchments. To fill the gaps in the knowledge about the relationship between the urban landscape and sedimentation, field landscape surveys were conducted in the residential areas of the Russian cities of Ekaterinburg, Nizhniy Novgorod, Rostov-on-Don, Tyumen, Chelyabinsk, and Murmansk. Methods: In each city, six elementary urban residential landscapes were chosen in blocks of multi-story apartment buildings typical for Russian cities. The method of landscape survey involved delineating functional segments within the elementary landscapes and describing each segment according to the developed procedure during a field survey. Results: The complexity of sedimentation processes in the urban environment was demonstrated. The following main groups of factors have significant impacts on sediment formation and transport in residential areas in Russian cities: low adaptation of infrastructure to a high density of automobiles, poor municipal services, and bad urban environmental management in the course of construction and earthworks. Conclusion: A high sediment formation potential was found for a considerable portion of residential areas.

In the paper I analyse the ways in which a city, urbanism, city space and people living in urban environment are portrayed in Polish popular music, especially in the songs of Polish alternative bands of the 80. inthe 20th century. In popular music, the city is pictured in several ways, among which the most important is the use of words as song lyrics that illustrate urban way of life. The city should be treated as an immanent part of the rock music mythology present in the songs and in the names of bands. In the case of Polish alternative rock music of the 80.such elements are found in songs of such artists as Lech Janerka, Variete, Siekiera, Dezerter, Deuter, AyaRL. The visions of urbanism taken from their songs are the exemplifications used in the paper.

The paper is dedicated to the analysis of the emotiogenic properties of digital content as a factor in the occurrence of impressing impact on an individual on the Internet. Impressing is considered as a sociocultural phenomenon - its results are the formation of a person’s sustainable desire for a certain type of activity. This is especially relevant in adolescence: for Internet users of this age category Internet is the second reality, while surfing the Internet is not only a significant part of social interactions, but also the actualization of individual’s abilities. Based on the sociological and psychological theory of perception, the emotiogenic properties of digital resources are represented as primary and secondary. The ability of each of the types of these properties to determine the occurrence of impressing in adolescent users is revealed. The corresponding assessment of the digital resources demanded by users of the considered age category is given on the basis of empirical data obtained by qualitatively-quantitative research methods: focus group, content analysis, interviews.

With growth of internet and social network service based on web, the complexity and the diversity of the cyberspace is increasingly focused by researchers. In order to research dynamic social interactions relations in cyberspace, this paper present a novel ideas to study cyberspace from new viewpoint of ecology. We first discuss the motivation from plant ecology to cyber ecology and redefine cyber ecology, which is different to previous definition, and then we present cyber ecology and computing research issues from individual, group (community), cyberspace environment and representing cyber information and knowledge. Finally, this paper compares cyber computing with existing research, such as social computing, urban computing and pervasive computing..
