In the paper I analyse the ways in which a city, urbanism, city space and people living in urban environment are portrayed in Polish popular music, especially in the songs of Polish alternative bands of the 80. inthe 20th century. In popular music, the city is pictured in several ways, among which the most important is the use of words as song lyrics that illustrate urban way of life. The city should be treated as an immanent part of the rock music mythology present in the songs and in the names of bands. In the case of Polish alternative rock music of the 80.such elements are found in songs of such artists as Lech Janerka, Variete, Siekiera, Dezerter, Deuter, AyaRL. The visions of urbanism taken from their songs are the exemplifications used in the paper.

Writing on music video has had two distinctive moments in its brief history. The first wave of treatments tended to come from the culture surrounding rock music and from those who were primarily interested in music video as something which produced effects on that music. Here, two claims were most common, and generally expressed in the terms and the contexts of rock journalism:(1) that music video had made ‘image’ more important than the experience of music itself, with effects which were to be feared (for example, the potential difficulties for artists with poor ‘images’, the risk that theatricality and spectacle would take precedence over intrinsically ‘musical’ values, etc.);(2) that music video would result in a diminishing of the interpretative liberty of the individual music listener, who would now have visual or narrative interpretations of song lyrics imposed on him/her, in what would amount to a semantic and affective impoverishment of the popular music experience.

Sister Carrie is one of the greatest works composed by Theodore Dreiser, one of the representatives of naturalists in American literature at the beginning of the 20th century. Among numerous works of Theodore Dreiser, Sister Carrie enjoys a quite high literary status, and also meets with different comments after its publication. The novel mainly tells the personal experiences of a rural beautiful girl Carrie in the big city Chicago. Driven by natural desires and urban environment, she changes her social status and original values in the end. Naturalism is a scientific and literary approach employed here to depict the characters in the novel where a person's fate is decided or predetermined by impersonal forces of nature and environment beyond human control. The novel is an experiment where the author could discover and analyze the natural forces and survival laws that influence personal behaviors, emotion and fate. This paper introduces the origin, development and characteristics of naturalism in American literature, studies the effect of human weakness on their life, and makes clear the influences of environment on people’s way of thinking and way of life.

The article addresses the evolution of layout and spatial design development regarding high-rise zoning in the central part of St. Petersburg. The skyline has always played an important role in the spatial composition of St. Petersburg. Study objective of the study is to analyze the evolution of the spatial and spatial structure and high-altitude zoning in the historical part of St. Petersburg in the end of the 19th – beginning of the 20th century. A study of the sustainable development of the historical urban environment is of undoubted interest from the point of view of identifying promising approaches to the implementation of planning, architectural and construction measures for for modern construction in the historical city. The study is based on cartographic, literary end field methods. St. Petersburg is a unity of space-planning structures that were shaped during the 18th–19th centuries. Moreover, every subsequent urban-planning concept of city development acted both to develop the city and to connect the concepts to each other. Therefore, regularities in the development of the system of high-rise dominating structures in St. Petersburg shall be analyzed with account for the historical stages of the layout shaping of its urban environment. Analysis of examples of new construction at the beginning of the 19th – beginning of the 20th century in the center of St. Petersburg allows you to capture a change in the urban landscape. The practice of active transformation of the city center was accompanied by changes with regard to the height range and scale, and, sometimes, replacement of the existing spatial structure and high-rise zoning.

The paper deals with the research of philosophic way of life as an invariant of the Western culture. The author tries to revealthe answers to the questions: What is the influence of the time and place of life on a thinking person? Is it possible to put a question in such away? The first part of the paper gives methodological explanation for such putting the questions. Two conceptual strategies of thinking in the contemporary history of philosophy are mentioned – compartmentalismand biographical method. The latter one allows to understand philosophizing through research of maître à penser. Such approach makes possible cultural studies prospect for the life of a philosopher in the context of unique time and space. To designate the uniqueness of time and space, the category of chronotope (M. Bakhtin) is introduced in the paper. Chronotope sets condensed signs in a definite period at the result of which a unique image of a thinker is born in a definite cultural space. The Antiquity image of philosopher is Socrates. Not a biographical person but a mythologized image, Socrates entered the great time of culture and influenced on the Western civilization. Since Socrates, the philosophizing of Antiquity is considered as the spiritual exercises (P.Hadot), in which the spirit of publicity is combined with the inner dialoguewith oneself. Late Antiquity changed practical orientation ofphilosophy by contemplative one. Plotinus is considered as the example of such life style. Medieval culture transmits philosophizing from agora to the monastery, and since the 13thcentury, philosophizing came back to the city space again – tomedieval university. Two opposite images of medieval philosophers are considered, Thomas Aquinas and Siger de Brabant, who were didactic examples, full of moral content. Stories about Siger’s life were spread at once after his death as the warning from inheritance; later on hewas forgotten. Thomas Aquinas’ life is known as hagiography, didactic story free from details of private life.

IntroductionThe concern of this article is with a particular set of harmonic practices that rock musicians, particularly those who participate in the domain of guitar-oriented ‘alternative’ rock, have been using with noticeable frequency in the last ten years. I am also interested in discussing the concept of the power chord (a term I shall explicate more clearly below) as a device in rock that has facilitated the above-mentioned set of harmonic practicesThe observations made in this paper come out of a previous research inquiry of mine into the devices which alternative musicians use to differentiate their music from other styles of mainstream rock. Also, the pursuit of this topic is partly a response to Allan Moore's admonition that ‘there is as yet very little concern for theorizing analytical method in rock music’, and his call for a ‘mapping-out of those harmonic practices that serve to distinguish rock styles . . . from those of common-practice tonality . . . and jazz’ (Moore 1995, p. 185).There has been some rather pointed criticism recently of musicological analyses of popular music (see Shepherd 1993; Frith 1990) on the charge that analysing music's purely sonic dimensions (i.e. melody, harmony, rhythm, structure, etc.) does not really help us understand musical communication. Speaking as a songwriter, however, I would argue that many musicians in rock are indeed concerned with harmonic progression (or ‘the changes’, to use the vernacular term) as an important device or jumping-off point in the process of songwriting. It also seems reasonable to suggest that harmonic progression is a contributing factor in the affective power of a song, although its importance here is likely to be variable and quite open to debate.

In this article, the author concludes that recent projects of digitalisation of the urban environment have initially been projects of the fundamental science of modernity, i. e. predominantly 1970s. In modern urban practise in Russia, their implementation is mainly superimposed on the structure of the city, formed at the same time, but already perceived as the past. Bridging this gap is in understanding what exactly the architectural modernism of the late Soviet period left us. As the initial stage of this, necessary for the classification of artefacts, the author proposes a reasoned periodisation of Soviet urbanism in the second half of the 20th century.

This paper focuses on the documentary photography of Eugène Atget in late 19th and early 20th-century Paris. I will begin by exploring Atget’s position as a pioneering documentary photographer in the field, followed by an engagement with the urban environment of Paris, in which Atget worked almost exclusively. Finally, I will analyse a single photograph in depth while discussing it in relation to the work of Charles Baudelaire and Jacques Rancière. This text is a contribution to a literature of critical engagement with documentary photography, urban history and the politics of class visibility. I will do so by arguing for the political significance of reading Atget’s images in a critical, political manner that engages with Rancière’s concept of the ‘anonymous multiple’. Atget is considered a key documentary photographer, and, as such, he is exemplary of the history of documentary photography and its treatment of its subjects.

This chapter considers the popular music used in Paweł Pawlikowski's Ida. It explores the link between American jazz music and Poland during the 1960s and the classical music that accompanies the most serious moments of Ida. It also reviews Pawlikowski's interviews, where he often mentioned how he was inspired by the Polish rock music of his childhood when creating Ida and how shooting the scene in Poland offered him a trip down memory lane. The chapter describes silence as the reigning aspect of sound in Ida, which dominates and drives the film and draws viewers' attention. It reveals the silence in Ida as a force, a confession, a way of life, and a demand all at once.

Interdisciplinary approaches and distinctive representation methods are needed to expand the range of meaning in the architecture and to consider the design process in unique frameworks. Literature disrupts the static images produced for the city in the context of the imaginative weight and the various dynamics it makes with the reader also uses the city, space, and architecture to create a different dimension of representation. This situation, which is inspected in the article regarding the relationship between literature, city, and architecture, will be examined through the "Laughable Places" workshop, that is part of the e-workshop days held at Gebze Technical University in February 2021. In this sense, firstly the relationship between literature and architecture and the revealing of their potentials are handled through the imaginative, representational and textual dimensions. Than through various workshops where the relationship between fictional narrative and architecture is applied, it is reviewed in which contexts fictional narrative can be included in the intellectual process of design. This review has been grouped according to the method in the workshop setups, using the fictional narrative based on literary works or the writing fictional narratives by participants. The workshop process was interpreted through the hybridity of the two approaches.

Статья посвящена исследованию форм взаимодействия международных выставочных арт-проектов XXXXI веков (биеннале, триеннале и подобных мероприятий) с городом. Несмотря на распространенность и актуальность данных фестивалей, их влияние на городскую среду изучено недостаточно полно. Автор проводит комплексное исследование при помощи традиционных искусствоведческих и семиотических методов анализа. В результате приведена типология форм взаимодействия международных выставочных арт-проектов с городской средой: от города как темы выставки и предмета изображения в рамках отдельного произведения до выхода арт-объектов в пространство улиц, перформансов и стрит-арта. Также отмечено влияние экспозиционных арт-проектов на изменение функционального назначения целых кварталов и социокультурной среды, равно как и обратное воздействие гения места на выставку. The article is devoted to the study of the forms of interaction of international exhibition art projects of the 20th 21st centuries (biennale, triennial and similar events) with the city. Despite the prevalence and relevance of these festivals, their impact on the urban environment has not been fully studied. The author conducted a comprehensive study using traditional art and semiotic methods of analysis. As a result, a typology of the forms of interaction of international exhibition art projects with the urban environment is presented: from the city as the theme of the exhibition and the subject of the image as part of a separate work to the exit of art objects into the space of streets, performances and street art. The influence of exposition art projects on changing the functional purpose of entire neighborhoods and the sociocultural environment, as well as the inverse effect of the genius of place on the exhibition, are also noted.
