Applications of Intelligent Agents in Mobile Commerce

Mobile phone usage and its adoption have been growing at exponential rates. It is this exponential growth rate that has led many to predict Mobile Commerce (M-Commerce) as the next major evolution of Electronic Commerce (E-Commerce). While M-Commerce comes rich with unique features, it is currently lacking in usage when compared to traditional e-commerce. There are many challenges that must be addressed in this respect. These challenges are mostly inherent in the mobile devices, communication network, legal and regulatory infrastructure. The use of agents in e-commerce has long been explored in the context, resulting in a number of agent based e-commerce systems. It is not surprising then to note that many researchers believe that the problems that the M-Commerce now faces can be addressed well using agent technology. While there is an abundance of information on the use of agent based systems in other areas, there has been no great surge yet in the use of agent based systems in real world M-Commerce applications. We believe that this slow adoption of this agent technology is due to a lack of standards. There has been a quite an amount of research work carried out in the use of software intelligent agents in the M-Commerce applications like Shopping, Hotel, and Airline industries. These are outlined in the paper with appropriate screenshots and descriptions.

This study intends to propose an intelligent system with agent technology in order to realize integration and cooperation of multi-project production planning and scheduling process. The agent-based system framework, in which various intelligent agents worked together to perform multi-project production planning and scheduling tasks in an autonomous and collaborative way, is put forward. The system consists of three categories of agents and functional definition of each intelligent agent is presented. Moreover, agents communication mechanism and cooperation sequence diagram are proposed. Furthermore, an intelligent algorithm based on fuzzy comprehensive evaluation is designed to resolve competition conflicts among the agents. Finally, an experiment example was illustrated and the algorithm was demonstrated feasible and efficient.

Intelligent agents can provide more flexible intelligence/expertise and help the smooth integration of a variety of system types (i.e., Internet applications, customer relationship management, supplier network management, enterprise resources management, expert systems). This chapter presents an overview of expert systems as the most widely-used approach for domain Knowledge Management today as well as agent technology, and shows the latter as a superior systems development vehicle providing flexible intelligence/expertise and the integration of a variety of system types. To illustrate, a system developed first by using an expert system approach and then by an agent-based approach is used to identify the strengths and weaknesses of the agent-based approach. Last, the practical implications of a company adoption of agent-based technology for systems development are addressed.

Mobile users desire customized bundles of services that need to be dynamically created from the service providers. However, services are unique and since unused services do not generate revenues they present a lost ‘economic rent’ for organizations that are not part of the network of service providers and, as a result, not a part of the customised bundle of services. The dynamic discovery of a bundle of individual services from such a network that meets the unique needs and constraints of the mobile user requires intelligent agent technology. Such agent technology would match personal needs of the user with the available services in a cost-efficient manner. This chapter provides a mechanism to create dynamic service bundles from ad-hoc user requirements using intelligent agents. The authors apply this technique to a mobile commerce environment and illustrate the composition of user-specific service “bundles” by intelligent agents that represent the interests of the m-commerce user. Such agent-based architectures provide users customized solution ‘bundles’ that reduce their cognitive burden, while improving the utilization of resources for organization that are part of the service provider network.

This chapter brings out various issues in M-Commerce and describes various agent-based product negotiation models in mobile commerce environment. The negotiation models discussed are based on auctions, trade off, argumentation, contract Net, bilateral and game theory. Mobile commerce (M-Commerce) is an emerging manifestation of Internet electronic commerce that bridges the domains of Internet, mobile computing and wireless telecommunications in order to provide an array of sophisticated services to mobile users. The usages of M-Commerce services in commercial activities are expected to dominate the world. Commercial activities through wireless are gradually changing the daily practice and future possibilities. This opens many new possibilities, opportunities and challenges in mobile commerce. Using software agent technology by providing intelligence, autonomous, customized, adaptable and flexible services, can enhance M-Commerce activities. The agent technology supports Component Based Software Engineering (CBSE) thereby allowing software developers to create dynamic software architecture for m-commerce applications.

M-Commerce has become distinguished in Indian people, quickly during last few years. Due to large number of mobile application, growth rate in mobile penetration in India is increasing with the rapid speed. The mobile users has shifted to use the android phone from simple and black and white phone and taking the service of internet, the role of telecom companies is also important in the being popular of mobile commerce. Although many people have started E-Commerce but still a separate part of the society feel uncomfortable and hesitate to use M-Commerce because of security problems, payment issues and complexity of mobile applications. This paper identifies facts about the feasibility of MCommercein India today its growth and the Strength and opportunity, weakness and threats lying ahead.

Abstract One of the largest nationwide bursts of the first COVID-19 outbreak occurred in Spain, where infection expanded in densely populated areas through March 2020. We analyse the cumulative growth curves of reported cases and deaths in all Spain and two highly populated regions, Madrid and Catalonia, identifying changes and sudden shifts in their exponential growth rate through segmented Poisson regressions. We associate these breakpoints with a timeline of key events and containment measures, and data on policy stringency and citizen mobility. Results were largely consistent for infections and deaths in all territories, showing four major shifts involving 19–71% reductions in growth rates originating from infections before 3 March and on 5–8, 10–12 and 14–18 March, but no identifiable effect of the strengthened lockdown of 29–30 March. Changes in stringency and mobility were only associated to the latter two shifts, evidencing an early deceleration in COVID-19 spread associated to personal hygiene and social distancing recommendations, followed by a stronger decrease when lockdown was enforced, leading to the contention of the outbreak by mid-April. This highlights the importance of combining public health communication strategies and hard confinement measures to contain epidemics.
