Emerging Technologies and Organizational Transformation

Technologies continue to evolve and to largely transform business practices. In the near future, a few technologies, such as Internet of Things (IoT), Augmented Reality (AR), additive manufacturing (3D printing), and robots, can substantially influence businesses. The reason to focus specifically on these technologies as leading factors for organizational change is twofold: first, there already exist many prototypes and pilot experiments; and second, these technologies have the potential to provoke substantial breakthroughs, leading to substantial business changes. The chapter proposes an overall vision about the impact of these four emerging technologies on business practices and how they will fuel substantial business transformation. The chapter starts with a short analysis how IT influences the core business models and value formation. Then, the authors present the state of the art in e-business technologies and current emerging trends. Finally, the authors propose a detailed overview and discussion of the newly emerging bridge technologies, illustrating with examples their role and economic potential.

Cloud computing is a usage model that is characterised by five key characteristics, four deployment models and three service models. The drivers and disadvantages of the adoption and implementation of cloud computing are discussed. The topic is further discussed in relation to the impact of cloud computing on supply chains. The cloud technology has become an important invention in modern society. This chapter examines the benefits and risks brought by the cloud system. The chapter explores the possible changes during transformation that might result in the implementation of cloud systems in firms. The business models presented due to the implementation of cloud system are also illustrated in this chapter.

Purpose Organisations need to tackle emerging trends that affect business models (BM) by modifying, changing or re‐designing their models. Attending this complex environment by understanding trends and the strategies actors use to handle these competing demands is strategically important for innovation management and sustaining organisations.. Therefore, this study aims to investigate how organisations assess and deal with these complex and relevant challenges. Design/methodology/approach A total of 18 higher management experts between the ages of 27 and 59 years participated in this four-month qualitative interview-based study. The interviews were analysed by using systematic, qualitative content analysis. Findings Results showed that all elements of a BM are influenced by emerged trends, and how organisations deal with them can decide whether the impact poses as risk or offers opportunities. Trends trigger two different strategies – reactive and proactive resilience strategies – which are closely related to the change sensitivity of the attributional resilience model, thereby presenting a crucial factor for enhancing resilience. Nevertheless, the proactive resilience strategy seems to be more promising for enhancing organisational resilience regarding the influence of trends on their BM. Moreover, this study found that the usage of foresight methods might be suitable as an important tool for proactive resilience strategy to modification, change or re-design of BM and consequently anticipate trends. Originality/value Overall, this study is one of the first that explains how BMs are influenced by trends and how organisations handle them by using organisational resilience strategies.

The use of emerging technology tools, platforms and devices has become an integral part of education. This was evident during the recent Coronavirus pandemic lockdown of which many educators and students had to rely on the use of various technological devices, platforms and tools such as videoconferencing tools and e-learning platforms to aid continued education online. The study examines the impact of emerging technologies on the job performance of educators in selected tertiary institutions in Nigeria. Data were collected through structured questionnaires administered to 152 educators selected from five different tertiary institutions in Nigeria. The collected data were later analyzed using STATA/regression Analysis. The result shows that there was a significant improvement on the job performances of educators due to their usage of various emerging technologies. Most of the participants used emerging technologies for; content development and delivery, knowledge creation, communication, assessment, research, academic advising and professional development, all of which enhanced their efficiencies and productivity at work. Also, several factors such as; network and electricity issues were found to limit the use of emerging technologies by educators. The study concluded that emerging technologies are essential tools to improve educator’s efficiency and productivity, thus, there is need for all educators to always update their digital skills in line with the emerging trends in technology and education. Today, the complexity of so many emerging technologies requires anunderstanding of adjacent technologies often originating from multiple industries. Technology sequence analysis has been used by organizations, governments and industries to help make sense of the many variables impacting the evolution of technologies. This technique relies heavily on the input of experts who can offer perspectives on the status of current technologieswhile also highlighting the potential opportunities in the future. However, the volume and speed at which scientific research is accelerating is making it nearly impossible for even the most knowledgeable expert to stay current with research in their own industries. Today however, the use of big data search tools can help identify emerging trends around disruptive technologieswell before many of the experts have fully grasped the impact of these technologies. Despite the fear of many in the intelligence community that these tools will make their jobs obsolete, we expect that the value of the intelligence expert will increase given their unique knowledge of relevant data sources and how to connect the data in meaningful ways to derive value for the firm. We propose a new forecasting model that incorporates a combination of technologysequencing analysis and big data tools within the organization while also leveraging experts from across the open innovation spectrum. This new model, informed by current client engagements, has the potential to create significant competitive advantages for organizations as they benefit from expanded search breadth, search depth and search speed all while leveraging a range of internal and external experts to make sense of the rapidly changingtechnological landscape confronting their environment.

Abstract This paper analyzes how design diffusion is changing the organizational logics of established companies. If previously design activities had as its main objective packaging new technologies to create differentials for products and services and to reduce production costs, with the diffusion of digital services currently design activities expand its scope and identify functional and emotional needs from users that are relevant for creating differentiated experiences, that in turn will result in new products and services that incorporate existing and emerging technologies of the firm. This transformation reveals a new organizational strategy, in which design assumes a more relevant position for the creation of innovative business models. However, a point not yet considered in the literature is how companies are restructuring their operations in order to benefit from this transition. This paper analyzes how Brazilian organizations of different sizes and sectors have redefined their management models in order to incorporate design as a catalyst of change. The obtained framework consolidates the main propositions of design while directing of the changes in the organizations in the operational, tactical and strategic levels.

This chapter outlines a number of issues on enterprise design architectures suitable for applications that need flexibility and change in their design. Better understanding of user requirements is needed to reflect the best performance of the system towards its users. Verifying the requirements elicited for best system performance is an essential task for enterprise systems design. The requirements elicited should reflect the user intention, as he/she has demanded. This chapter presents some of the international Lyee project’ results led by Fujita (Fujita 2001) and is structured into two parts: one part reflects the collaborative intention outcome and the other part is related to legacy software outcome. The 1st part shows the impact of correct requirements on enterprise design architectures; it also enlists some of the results achieved by our project. The 2nd part shows the impact of Legacy software using new techniques extracted from an intention-oriented tool, namely Lyee builder. This second part also contributes in showing new techniques for handling legacy software, an issue that is important for handling essential problems related to old generation software, which is our current interest. We have succeeded to build a software diagnosis tool based on the Lyee framework, which is currently used in business practices to diagnose programs written in imperative languages.

This paper aims to empirically identify the key factors that drive effective innovative business models in the creative industries. There have been various approaches of analyzing the impact and importance of the creative industries but few appears to address the importance of major stakeholders driving innovation potential in this arena. A case study of the Moon Lantern Festival event held in Adelaide South Australia, where it is part of the OzAsia Festival has been adopted in this paper to underline the analyses of this study. Using a systems approach and stakeholder theory this research aims to develop a model that evaluates innovative business practices in major public Performing Arts Festivals. From the case study and its stakeholder analysis a new business model framework is proposed with a focus on organisational culture, idea generation, relationships and collaborations, team work and resource sharing.

The increased disruption of business models through digital technologies creates opportunities and challenges for retail businesses and their network partners. Digital transformation – the process of digitalization of previously analogue operations, procedures, organizational tasks, and managerial processes in order to drive value for customers, employees and other stakeholders – is the order of the day. With that in mind, this article provides a purposeful overview of research in the field of digital transformation with a focus on retailing and customer-facing functions of digital technologies such as managing customer journeys, assessing the impact of sensory marketing and the use of service robots on the one hand, and their strategic implications for business models such as servitization on the other. This article concludes by highlighting immediate as well as long-term challenges in the field, with a focus on disruptive technologies, innovations and trends that retail marketing-management will likely face in the near future.
