Rapid liberalization of education sector in India has resulted in increased competition. As a result, we have witnessed rapid rise in number of management institutes. The student's evaluation about an institute/college is based on multiple criteria. Realizing the need a focused review on the literature was made to understand the subject. The review highlighted that conventional methods for B-school evaluation are inadequate for dealing with the imprecise, uncertain or vague nature of linguistic assessment. To overcome this difficulty, due to MCDM problem, Fuzzy multi-criteria decision-making methods are proposed. The aim of this study is to use fuzzy technique for order preference by similarity to ideal solution (TOPSIS) and Analytical Hierarchal process (AHP) methods for the selection of better B-school. The proposed methods have been applied to a B-School selection problem of the students of NCR and results are presented. This chapter contributes to previous researches by adding a new avenue, where the MCDM technique can be useful. The selection of an institution for getting a professional degree is a very tough task for the students and as well as for their guardians. This method can help them to find a better solution by providing a quantitative framework.

Supplier selection is an important component of supply chain management in today?s global competitive environment. Hence, the evaluation and selection of suppliers have received considerable attention in the literature. Many attributes of suppliers, other than cost, are considered in the evaluation and selection process. Therefore, the process of evaluation and selection of suppliers is a multi-criteria decision making process. The methodology adopted to solve the supplier selection problem is intuitionistic fuzzy TOPSIS (Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to the Ideal Solution). Generally, TOPSIS is based on the concept of minimum distance from the positive ideal solution and maximum distance from the negative ideal solution. We examine the deficiencies of using only one metric function in TOPSIS and propose the use of spherical metric function in addition to the commonly used metric functions. For empirical supplier selection problems, more than one metric function should be used.

This article describes how in developing countries, millions of tons of construction and demolition wastes (CDWs) are lost every year due to lack of knowledge of recycling significance and/or procedures. Despite the high value of CDWs, high percentage of this waste is either dumped illegally or disposed in the landfills. Disposal methods should consider saving natural resources and maintaining the environmental conditions through maximizing the value of CDWs. This article aims at choosing the most sustainable disposal alternative using Multi-Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) Process, considering several sustainability measure indicators. The research introduces a list containing the most relevant and significant sustainable indicators that affect the selection of alternative for disposal of CDWs. Then, fuzzy TOPSIS technique is applied considering the significant indicators on each alternative to rank and choose the best alternative for disposal of CDWs.

In this article, methodologies have been proposed for site selection of sub-station considering technical and non-technical constraints. Firstly, a systematic frame has been developed considering various factors that influence the optimal location of the sub-station. Various factors considered are evaluated using DEMATEL-QFD. An evaluation has been done between the outcome of the TOPSIS (Technique for order preference by similarity to ideal solution) method and the COPRAS (Compressed Proportional Assessment) method. Finally, Spearman rank co-relation co-efficients indicates the strength of association of both the methodologies. A case study is done using GIS to prove the justification of the methodologies to the applied area. The application of the methodologies will help the decision maker improve the plan, location and grid renovation of the distribution sub-stations.

Currently there are about 500 institutions throughout Malaysia which offer tertiary education level. They consist of public and private colleges. However, this variety will lead to confusion among the Malaysians in order to choose the right places to further their studies. The aim of this study is to select and rank the significant factor which influences the selection of university between IPTA and IPTS. By approaching the main objective, the sub-objective; to determine the most preferred university based on the associated factor can also be examined. Fuzzy TOPSIS (Fuzzy Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution) is one of the best methods to assess this kind of multi-criteria decision-making problem. The alternative of this research will be the factors influencing Malaysians’ choice of universities which are affiliation, course offered, cost of education and reputation. While the criteria will be IPTA and IPTS. The data was collected by interviewing experts in both fields; public and private sectors. The result referred by the value of closeness coefficient of each alternative is determined in order to rank those alternatives (factors). Based on the result, the major factor is affiliation while the rest is course offered, cost of The most preferred is IPTS that represents a better affiliation.

In this paper, the main concern is to evaluate the web-sources, which are to be selected as an external source for web-warehousing. In order to identify the web sources, they are evaluated on the basis of their multiple features. For it, Multi-Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) approach is used. In this paper, among all the MCDM approach, the focus is on “Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution” (TOPSIS) approach and proposing an enhancement in this method. The traditional TOPSIS approach uses Euclidean Distance to measure the similarity. Here, Jeffrey Divergence has been proposed instead of Euclidean Distance to compute the similarity measure which includes asymmetric and symmetric distances during computation. Experimental analysis of both the variations of TOPSIS approach have been conducted and the result shows the enhancement in the selection of web sources.

Multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) techniques are increasingly being used for the problem of location selection, which directly affects the long-term success of a company. Besides these techniques, with the advantage of handling both spatial and non-spatial data, geographic information systems (GIS) also represent a useful method for selecting the appropriate location for different kinds of facilities and sites. In this respect, this study aims to compare the results of a MCDM technique, fuzzy technique for order preference by similarity to ideal solution (TOPSIS), and GIS for the location selection of shopping malls in Turkey. According to the results of both fuzzy TOPSIS and GIS, the Marmara region was determined as the best alternative for shopping malls in Turkey.

The selection of an appropriate spillway has a significant effect to the construction of a dam and several procedures and considerations are needed. In the past, this selection of the type of the spillway was arbitrary and sometimes with bad results. Recently the Multiple Criteria Decision Making theory has given the possibility to make a decision about the optimum form of a spillway under complex circumstances. In this paper, the above method is used and especially the TOPSIS (Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution) method for the selection of a spillway for a dam in the district of Kilkis in Northern Greece—‘Dam Pigi’. As the criteria were fuzzy and uncertain, the Fuzzy TOPSIS method is introduced together with the AHP (Analytic Hierarchy Process), which is used for the evaluation of criteria and weights. Five types of spillways were selected as alternatives and nine criteria. The criteria are expressed as triangular fuzzy numbers in order to formulate the problem. Finally, using the Fuzzy TOPSIS method, the alternatives were ranked and the optimum type of spillway was obtained.


The most famous method when dealing with decision making is Multi-Criteria Decision Making (MCDM). One of the easiest technique from MCDM is Fuzzy Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (FTOPSIS). However, there are some circumstances in FTOPSIS still needs to be enhanced. Therefore, this paper concentrates on: 1) to develop FTOPSIS with Z-number and α -cut based MCDM problem; the combination of Z-Number and α-cut is seen suitable to solve uncertainty issue due to the additional restriction and reliability parts; 2) to validate the propose method for solving smoking problems in Jordan; three decision makers which are parent, student and health organization are requested to answer all the questionnaires based on smoking behaviour problems. The study presents six steps of FTOPSIS with Z-numbers and αcut to verify the position of the smoking behaviour; 3) to evaluate the efficiency of the proposed method using 10 different number of α-cut. Ten different numbers are 0.1 till 0.9. Results illustrate that many Jordanian smoke because they want to lose their weight. From the study, this proposed method opens a new revolution in MCDM area to provide different ways when dealing with decision making problems. Thus, give us variety of techniques in decision making area.
