A lot of solid waste is generated in every country of the world. Among various disposal methods used for management of solid waste, open dumping is mostly used in many countries, especially developing countries. Due to open dumping, the environment becomes polluted. It also creates aesthetic problems at the site. Industrial and agricultural wastes are simple to handle being of specific characteristics. This chapter describes in detail the composition of municipal solid waste, various problems arising due to solid waste, approaches used for solid waste management, and environmental recycling system (ERS). ERS, its components, and methods for segregation of waste have also been discussed in detail in this chapter.

Purpose Due to the increasing population and prosperity, the generation rate of municipal solid waste (MSW) has increased significantly, resulting in serious problems on public health and the environment. Every single person in the world is affected by the municipal solid waste management (MSWM) issue. MSWM is reaching a critical level in almost all areas of the world and seeking the development of MSW strategies for a sustainable environment. This paper aims to present the existing global status of MSW generation, composition, management and related problems. Design/methodology/approach A total of 59 developed and developing countries have been grouped based on their gross national income to compare the status of various MSWM technologies among them. A total of 19 selection criteria have been discussed to select appropriate MSWM technology(s) for a city/town, which affects their applicability, operational suitability and performance. All risks and challenges arising during the life cycle of the waste to energy (WtE) project have also been discussed. This paper also gives a comparative overview of different globally accepted MSWM technologies and the present market growth of all WtE technologies. Findings It was found that most developed countries have effectively implemented the solid waste management (SWM) hierarchy and are now focusing heavily on reducing, reusing and recycling of MSW. On the other hand, SWM has become very serious in low-income and low-middle-income countries because most of the MSW openly dumps and most countries are dependent on inadequate waste infrastructure and the informal sector. There are also some other major challenges related to effective waste policies, availability of funds, appropriate technology selection and adequacy of trained people. This study clears the picture of MSW generation, composition, management strategies and policies at the worldwide context. This manuscript could be valuable for all nations around the world where effective MSWM has not yet been implemented. This manuscript could be valuable for all nations around the world where effective MSWM has not yet been implemented. In this study, no data was generated. All supporting data were obtained from previously published papers in journals, the outcomes of the international conferences and published reports by government organizations.

MSWM (Municipal Solid Waste Management) is a challenge in developing countries, especially in Algeria. In this paper, a quantitative analysis is proposed, showing that the collection of recyclable items qualified as a high-quality raw material will build a wide profit. The locations of recycling centers in Algeria were determined for the plastic, paper/cardboard, metal, textile and glass. The annual generated amount of each type of recyclable was defined and finally a range of purchase prices was established to estimate the possible price to sell these products. The purpose was to find the most profitable recyclable material to be collected in order to motivate both the informal sector and the recycling industry to collect recyclables. It was observed that plastic is the most profitable recyclable followed by the paper/cardboard, and then textile.

Handling of solid waste has been a serious problem for countries all over the world. Increase in population, change in life standard and life style, industrialization and production of new products contribute to the increase in the amount of solid wastes and consequently the problems generated by them. Developed countries, being aware of the significance of the problems, established regulatory programs, while economically developing countries continued to handle the solid wastes in a very primitive way, such as dumping them into “open dumps.” In these countries recycling activities are mostly carried on by scavengers in a very primitive way. For the protection of the environment and sustainable development, economically developing countries should establish solid waste management policies, plan recycling programs and publish related regulations and by-laws, and strictly control the application of them. This is explored in this chapter.

Municipal Solid waste management in developing countries is a gigantic task and its improper management can lead to severe environmental concerns and immense economic loss. However, many urban local bodies are not fully aware of the existing gaps in infrastructure and MSW management services that should be provided to make the system run efficiently and ensuring compliance to the national rules for waste management.The scale of the problem is huge as the reported annual MSW generation in India is about 58.87 Million tonnes (2016-2018) with an estimated annual increase of about 5%.We all know thatinadequate collection of municipal solid waste results in local and global environmental problems, including air pollution (local health and global climate change) and water pollution (local water bodies and marine litter). The Solid Waste Management Rules of 2016 issued by the Government of India requires source segregation and collection; and identifies specific roles and responsibilities for stakeholders, including waste generators, collectors, and local government. The main objectives of the study were to conduct a gap analysis of the existing municipal waste management system in East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC) area and to assist in ensuring proper implementation of Solid Waste Management Rules 2016.This paper presents the relevant national rules and the current collection practices in East Delhi based on the results of a recent survey of waste management practices. The survey revealed that much of the waste was not segregated, and found that lack of awareness, infrastructure, monitoring, incentives and penalties were the primary reasons for inadequate collection practices in the city. Door-to-door campaigns, television advertisements, and penalties for noncompliance were identified as some of the key measures to improve segregation and collection.The methodology used for the study was a mix of primary and secondary research tools like, transect walks, personal interviews with stakeholders, focus group discussions and literature review; in sample wards of the city to ensure a 90% confidence level. Such a study shall beuseful for other developing countries to help identify priority areas of action and achieve sustainable MSW management.
