An Overview of Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs), Pedagogies, and Distance Education

This chapter discussed an overview of massive open online courses (MOOC) pedagogies and distance education in Malaysia. Meanwhile, topics such as MOOC in Malaysia, distance education, theory, and concept and other sub-topics are discussed. Massive open online courses (MOOCs) are the instructed course with the various number of students using the internet. Indeed, MOOCs are not a new tool to educational modules outline and strategy. At the end of this chapter, effective teaching strategies are proposed.

Since 2012, known as the first year of "massive open online Courses (MOOCs)", its development speed beyond our imagination, only Courses one company registered online learners reached more than 4.1million people (up to July 21, 2013). MOOCs will be bring what challenge for distance education development in China, how to deal with these challenges, is our reality problem need to concerned. We hope through the above question discussion to accelerate the change of distance education in our country, to adapt to the trend of the internationalization of higher education, promoting its healthy development..

Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) are considered as important trends in electroniclearning (e-learning) in higher education. Many universities offered MOOCs to any learners who preferlearning via the internet and benefiting from the offered courses online. Massive Open Online Courses areopen learning to anyone to enrol and study and many offered courses are free which do not require payingfees. MOOCs are delivered as video-based content via the internet offered by educational institutions anduniversities to many international learners. There is a lack of previous studies and scientific papers thatinvestigates the global role of MOOCs in e-learning. MOOCs has emerged due to learning theories relatedto learners whether individuals or networks of learners. Therefore, this paper reviews Massive Open OnlineCourses characteristics, it spread around the world, its practical implementation in e-learning LearningManagement Systems (LMS) and its theoretical contributing roles to enhance e-learning through its rolesin promoting e-learning theories.

Purpose: The purpose of this review article is to describe the benefits and challenges associated with massive open online courses (MOOCs) and to discuss the implications specific to medical imaging education and training. Methods: Peer-reviewed journal articles pertaining to MOOCs in higher education were analyzed to identify commonalities, relationships, and possible gaps in the literature. Results: Analysis revealed several repetitive themes and concepts regarding the use of MOOCs in higher education: theory of connectivism, instructors’ and students’ perspectives, and benefits and challenges. Implications for medical imaging education and training were also discussed. Conclusions: As web-based education and technology integration continue to increase, innovative approaches, such as MOOCs, will continue to develop. As higher education institutions continue experimenting with MOOCs, opportunities to engage individuals as lifelong learners will rise. Medical imaging students can use MOOCs to refine skills to prepare for an upcoming course along with the possibility of completing continuing education requirements.

Universitas Terbuka (UT) as an open and distance e-learning institution in Indonesia, has widely intensify the interconnectivity on international stages. UT adopts international academic standard and pave its vision “to provide access to a world quality higher education for all through open and distance higher education”. Although, most of UT students do not yet have access to adequate internet connection, UT has been a reference for other open education institutions and was acknowledged by the global community to have been succeeded in managing distance education system. By outlining the concept of education diplomacy creates an explanation that the growth of globalized educational collaboration increases the importance of conveying people-to-people engagement through e-learning education system. In previous years, UT has aimed the mission toward an ASEAN distance education collaboration and offer an Open Online Certificate Program through MOOC (Massive Open Online Courses). The aim is to share knowledge among Indonesian and its counterparts in ASEAN.

This chapter presents a description of Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs), their brief history and some examples. Then the chapter focuses on online learning and how research on distance education can be used to inform the design of these courses. In particular, the authors consider research in the following areas: improving learner experience, online activities, and assessment.
