A Fuzzy-Based Sustainable Solution for Smart Farming

Agriculture is an important sector in many developing countries, but the traditional methods are not sufficient to produce a good amount of crop. Moreover, the natural calamities are also destroying a large portion of the crop. Hence, this chapter proposes a prototype model, AgriHelp, to address an agricultural issue using fuzzy logic. The model takes two parameters as input: when and where the farmer wants to sow the crop. Using this information along with available dataset, AgriHelp extracts the expected min-max temperature, rainfall and soil type in the region in the specified season and suggests the best-suited crop to the farmer. The model can further be extended by incorporating more features.

The importance of poultry as a source of meat and eggs in developing countries is generally recognised, but present levels of production and consumption in Africa are disappointing. This article reviews the factors involved and concludes that there is a need for research designed to improve the traditional methods of small producers rather than seeking to impose modern Western methods on communities too backward to make effective use of them.

This paper examines communicative language teaching (CLT) and its significance in terms of language teaching and learning. The actual purpose of the paper is to explore the causes of failure of CLT in Pakistan and other developing countries in order to suggest the ways to make it successfully effective in the context. It is found that contextual problems such as overuse of traditional methods of teaching such as lecturing and large classes always come into clash with the use of CLT in the developing countries such as Pakistan because CLT is in fact a method developed and used in the developed countries where the contextual issues found in the educational institutes are rare as compared to developing countries.

We propose to use an approach based on fuzzy logic for the adaptation of gap generation and mutation probability in a genetic algorithm. The performance of this method is presented with the benchmark problem of flight control and results show how it can decrease the error during the flight of an airplane using fuzzy logic for some parameters of the genetic algorithm. In this case of study, we use fuzzy systems for adapting two parameters of the genetic algorithm to improve the design of a type 2 fuzzy controller and enhance its performance to achieve flight control. Finally, a statistical test is presented to prove the performance enhancement in the application using fuzzy adaptation in the genetic algorithm. It is important to mention that not only is this idea for control problems but also it can be used in pattern recognition and many different problems.

This paper is about developing a nonlinear model to predict the behavior of future exchange rate based on the opinion of the economic agents participating in the dollar/peso market. Such views are treated with Fuzzy Logic and a variant of it, known as the Theory of Forgotten Effects. The aim is to find a mechanism for making coverage decisions that allow us an optimal exchange rate risk management at a lower cost than that which involves operations with traditional hedging instruments. For the period of investigation and applying this model, the results support that the collective opinions of economic experts involved in the decision making risk management of exchange rate provide better results than those using traditional methods in the future markets.

This article makes a critical analysis of Zimbabwe’s contribution to peacekeeping and peace-support operations in the period 1980 to 2000. It argues that this contribution has brought in a new thrust of peacekeeping operations of coercing the other party to the negotiating table. The article demonstrates the complexity of traditional peacekeeping operations where member states (and in this case Zimbabwe) have made notable contribution to the cause of peacekeeping operations, not only through traditional methods and principles of peacekeeping but also through various other methodologies such as peace-support efforts. Using the 1980 to 2000 time frame, in case studying Zimbabwe’s contribution to peace support operations, this article demonstrates that even developing countries have the capacity and political willingness to shape international activities.  


Multipurpose hall is a public building of people assembly for various function and activities. It can be converted to be a temporary shelter during disaster like flood and earthquake. After experiencing tremors from both local and distant earthquakes, the time has come to implement the seismic design to new buildings in Malaysia to ensure public safety. The implementation of seismic design also affecting the cost of construction, especially materials. Therefore, this paper presents the taking off results for reinforced concrete multipurpose hall building with seismic design. In this study two parameters namely as soil type and concrete grade had been considered as design variable. Result from design and taking off demonstrated that the amount of steel reinforcement is strongly influenced by both parameters. The usage of steel for reinforced concrete buildings with seismic design is estimated to increase around 3% to 59% depend on soil type and concrete grade. Results also demonstrated that higher concrete grade require lower amount of steel as reinforcement.

Hyperheuristics rise as powerful techniques that get good results in less computational time than exact methods like dynamic programming or branch and bound. These exact methods promise the global best solution, but with a high computational time. In this matter, hyperheuristics do not promise the global best solution, but they promise a good solution in a lot less computational time. On the contrary, fuzzy logic provides the tools to model complex problems in a more natural way. With this in mind, this paper proposes a fuzzy hyperheuristic approach, which is a combination of a fuzzy inference system with a selection hyperheuristic. The fuzzy system needs the optimization of its fuzzy rules due to the lack of expert knowledge; indeed, traditional hyperheuristics also need an optimization of their rules. The fuzzy rules are optimized by genetic algorithms, and for the rules of the traditional methods, we use particle swarm optimization. The genetic algorithm will also reduce the number of fuzzy rules, in order to find the best minimal fuzzy rules, whereas traditional methods already use very few rules. Experimental results show the advantage of using our approach instead of a traditional selection hyperheuristic in 3200 instances of the 0/1 knapsack problem.


The use of technology in agriculture plays a vital role in revolutionizing traditional methods of farming. The insufficiency of technology and the use of traditional methods of farming results to low yielding of crops. The integration of smart agriculture using Internet of Things is an absolute solution in modernizing the traditional methods of farming. This paper aims to design and develop an IoT-driven system for high valued crop farming which automates farming processes like watering, distribution and application of fertilizer. It provides real-time monitoring and collection of information about the farm conditions like moisture, temperature, fertility of soil and level of water. Qualitative and quantitative data were gathered by means of interview and survey questionnaires which were given to Alfonso Lista, Ifugao farmers and Yaojiaxi Corporation personnel. The majority of the respondents evaluated the functionality of the system as “Fully Functional”, usability as “Very Usable”, efficiency as “Mostly Efficient” and maintainability as “Mostly Agree” based from the result of ISO standard criteria survey questionnaires. The developed prototype realized smart farming which promotes sustainable agriculture involving the integration of IoT technology into existing farming practices that definitely reduces manual work, man power and provides efficiency on the use of farming resources.

The present study presents an electronic decision-support tool that uses a fuzzy-logic model of expert knowledge to assist in multi-criteria decision-making in the context of an Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries (EAF). The prototype model integrates the multiple goals and objectives related to the evaluation of the ecosystem performance of the South African sardine Sardinops sagax fishery into a NetWeaver knowledge base and provides intuitive visual outputs to communicate results to managers and stakeholders. The software tool was developed in a consultative process with key experts and follows the hierarchical tree approach recommended in the FAO guidelines for responsible fisheries. Input variables are based both on quantitative data and expert opinion. We evaluated the model in terms of robustness to input changes, influence of system structure, and appropriateness of input scales for parameters based on expert opinion. Results show that the model is robust and conservative. The strength of the approach lies in the ability to include variables that are difficult to measure. It provides a means of rendering value judgements explicit and transparent. The tool synthesises a large amount of information and aims at improving understanding rather than achieving precision. The system has the potential to have wide application in the context of EAF.
