A Dynamic Model of End-User Computing

Control is a major issue in end-user computing. The migration of responsibility, resources and authority from IT departments to user departments is frequently seen as a loss of power by the IT departments and an erosion of cost control by senior management. Reactions to this situation tend to focus on technology and formal control mechanisms. This chapter contrasts such an IT-oriented view with a proposed, alternative user-oriented view. An IT-oriented view of EUC focuses on the problems it causes, the technology it requires, the methods that should be used and the means of limiting, controlling and standardizing. A user-oriented view of EUC focuses on the problems it solves, the user’s task and the organizational environment. The chapter advocates a shift in EUC research away from the technology and the IT issues towards the political, social and cultural issues associated with the users. EUC problems are, in the main, organizational problems requiring a research approach which addresses dynamic issues emerging over a period of time. As a basis for such research, the chapter proposes a dynamic model for EUC in which the progression of EUC within an organization is visualized as a series of inference loops.

The proliferation of microcomputers and the availability of sophisticated user application tools (Shayo, Guthrie, & Igbaria, 1999) have facilitated the widespread implementation of end-user computing technology.

End user computing (EUC) is like dark matter in physics. EUC is enormous in quantity and importance yet has been largely invisible to corporate IT departments, information systems (IS) researchers, and corporate management. EUC applications, especially spreadsheet applications, are also “dark” in the sense that they pose a number of overlooked risks for organizations, including errors, privacy violations, trade secret extrusions, and compliance violations. On the positive side, EUC applications are also like the dark energy of physics. They are supporting critical gains in decision making, computing by scientists and engineers, operational systems, and other important processes in every corner of the firm. It is time to stop ignoring end user computing in general and spreadsheets in particular. The purpose of this paper is to document to the extent possible today then importance of end user computing relative to the concerns of corporate IT departments and IS researchers.

Informasi sangat dibutuhkan dalam pengambilan keputusan. Sistem informasi yang efektif adalah sistem informasi yang harus mampu memberikan kepuasan kepada para penggunanya. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui pengaruh model End User Computing Satisfaction (EUCS) dengan Instrumen Accuracy, Content, Format, Timeliness dan Ease of Use terhadap kepuasan pengguna sistem UG In Your Hand. Data yang digunakan sebanyak 96 responden yang diperoleh melalui kuesioner online yang dibagikan kepada Mahasiswa. Metode penelitian menggunakan model Regresi Linier Berganda. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa Instrumen Ease of Use dan Timeliness mempengaruhi kepuasan pengguna sistem, selain itu Instrumen Content, Accuracy dan Format tidak mempengaruhi kepuasan pengguna sistem UG In Your Hand.   Kata Kunci : Kepuasan Pengguna, UG In Your Hand, Metode EUCS

This study aims to use information technology, uncertainty or moderation duties and interactions between task uncertainty with the use of information technology to end user computing satisfaction. In this study used 70 respondents who actively use computers and working with several companies banking on the city of Padang. The data used are the primary data obtained through questionnaires. The study used three types of variables, the first is the independent variable, namely the utilization of information technology, both moderating variables, namely the uncertainty of the task, the third is the dependent variable is satisfaction of end user computing. The stages of hypothesis testing is done by using a regression model of moderating and statistical t-test. Based on the results of testing the first hypothesis (HI) was found to significantly influence the utilization of information technology to the satisfaction of end user computing. The second hypothesis (H2) testing results found that task uncertainty did not significantly influence the end user computing satisfaction. The third hypothesis (H3) testing found that the interaction or moderation between the use of technology with task uncertainty no significant effect on end user computing satisfaction.
