The Missing Link to Enhanced Course Management Systems

The capabilities of the current generation of course management systems (CMS) are limited; even market-leading platforms are arguably inadequate for the needs of learners, instructors, and educational administrators. This chapter reviews the shortcomings of CMS and identifies problems associated with content capture, content re-use, search and retrieval, document management, IP management, connectivity, support for open standards, and support for learning strategies. We argue that the future lies in the adoption and adaptation of existing learning content management systems (LCMS). LCMS have evolved primarily in the corporate market and are rapidly developing into highly flexible applications that can implement a wide variety of learning and knowledge management strategies.

This chapter highlights how a graduate program in library science structured a university’s course management system to address the data gathering and document demands of accreditation. While examples in the literature revealed creative uses of content and course management systems, none specifically demonstrated ways to build a digital repository of accreditation materials. Design features of the course management system were found similar to content management systems but with distinct advantages. While both types of programs could address document storage without having to create separate Websites and to acquire dedicated Web servers, the course management system offers a way to communicate with colleagues, presents a mechanism to integrate specialized surveys within selected courses, and provides a way to compile and to save results from any survey or assessment technique. Faculty note ongoing challenges stemming from the use of a course management system but acknowledge viable solutions.

<p> Central Queensland University (CQU) is a highly complex institution, combining campuses in Central Queensland and distance education programs for Australian domestic students with Australian metropolitan sites for international students and a number of overseas centres, also for international students. In common with many other universities, CQU has recently reviewed its course management systems (CMSs). In doing so, CQU has signalled its desired strategic position in managing its online learning provision for the foreseeable future.</p> <p>This paper analyzes that strategic position from the perspective of the effectiveness of CQU’s engagement with current drivers of change. Drawing on online survey results, the authors deploy Introna’s (1996) distinction between teleological and ateleological systems to interrogate CQU’s current position on CMSs – one of its most significant enterprises – for what it reveals about whether and how CQU’s CMSs should be considered an accelerator of, or a brake on, its effective engagement with those drivers of change. The authors contend that a more thorough adoption of an ateological systems approach is likely to enhance the CMS’s status as an accelerator in engaging with such drivers. </p> <P><STRONG>Keywords: </STRONG>Australia, course management systems, enterprise systems, open and distance learning, teleological and ateleological systems<BR> </P>

XML (Extensible Markup Language) represents one of flexible platforms for processing enterprise documents. Its simple syntax and powerful software infrastructure for processing this type of documents is a guarantee for high interoperability of individual documents. XML is today one of technologies influencing all aspects of ICT area.In the paper questions and basic principles of reusing XML-based documents are described in the field of enterprise documents. If we use XML databases or XML data types for storing these types of documents then partial redundancy could be expected due to possible documents’ similarity. This similarity can be found especially in documents’ structure and also in documents’ content and its elimination is necessary part of data optimization.The main idea of the paper is focused to possibilities how to think about dividing complex XML docu­ments into independent fragments that can be used as standalone documents and how to process them.Conclusions could be applied within software tools working with XML-based structured data and documents as document management systems or content management systems.

Over the past two years, the pandemic caused by the COVID-19 virus has put to the test all spheres of life not only in Bulgaria but also worldwide. It can be claimed that the educational sector has acted adequately and has been able to deal with the challenge. The article presents research on the implementation of various e-learning tools by Bulgarian and foreign universities. The research was conducted at the beginning of the pandemic caused by COVID-19 by surveying students and lecturers. It turns out that despite the plethora of e-learning tools, at many universities, even in technologically advanced countries such as China, in most cases, education is delivered through distance learning and course management systems, for instance Moodle. The research objective is to ascertain the degree of implementation of various e-learning tools at Bulgarian and foreign universities. The research subject is the degree of implementation of e-learning tools, whereas the research object is students and lecturers from Bulgarian and foreign universities. The hypothesis, which is proven, is that the implementation of diverse e-learning tools is insufficient, despite the fact that their importance is acknowledged at all levels of learning and teaching.
