A Fuzzy Logic-Based Approach for Supporting Decision-Making Process in B2C Electronic Commerce Transaction

The purpose of this article is to present an application of fuzzy logic to human reasoning about electronic commerce (e-commerce) transactions. This article uncovers some of the hidden relationships between critical factors such as security, familiarity, design, and competitiveness. We analyze the effect of these factors on human decision process and how they affect the Business-to-Consumer (B2C) outcome when they are used collectively. This research provides a toolset for B2C vendors to access and evaluate a user’s transaction decision process and also an assisted reasoning tool for the online user.

Decision under uncertainty is an active interdisciplinary research field. A decision process is generally identified as the action of choosing an alternative that best suites our needs. This process generally includes several areas of research including but not limited to Economics, Psychology, Philosophy, Mathematics, Statistics, etc. In this chapter the authors attempt to create a framework for uncertainties which surrounds the environment where human decision making takes place. For this purpose, the authors discuss how one ought to handle uncertainties within Fuzzy Logic. Furthermore, they present recent advances in Type 2 fuzzy system studies.

In this chapter we begin by featuring the main characteristics of the human decision process. Then, from these traits, we separate the decision process between diagnosis and look-ahead. We explain why DMSSs are mainly look-ahead machines. We claim that look-ahead is generally performed via heuristic search and “what-if analysis” at different cognitive levels. This leads to a functional definition of DMSSs and to different architectures adapted to heuristic search and moreover, paves the way for an analysis of the decision support tools.

This paper is a review on Business to Consumer (B2C) electronic commerce (e-commerce) and it studies its evolution over the last decade. The Internet characteristics that affect B2C are the Internet growth, which at first includes the number of Internet users and secondly, the infrastructure, which is basically the quality and speed of the lines. Moreover, the way the Internet growth has affected the B2C e-commerce growth over the last ten years is studied in three major countries-areas. The USA because it is an Internet developed country with vast e-commerce sales, China because it is a rapidly developing Internet country with a large number of users and fast e-commerce activity growth in the last decade and finally, the European Union, because of its diversity in Internet and e-commerce growth. This paper focuses on the aforementioned three geographic areas and extracts its conclusions from the observations of B2C behavior growth in these areas.

Soft computing (SC) is a newly emerging multidisciplinary field. It is a collection of computational techniques, such as expert systems, fuzzy logic, neural networks, and evolutionary algorithms, which provide information processing capabilities to solve complex practical problems. The major benefit of SC lies in its ability to tolerate imprecision, uncertainty, partial truth, and approximation in processing imprecise and inaccurate information and simulating human decision making at low cost. This paper provides a brief introduction on soft computing.
