Robotics as a Vehicle for Multiliteracies

This chapter is a catalyst for encouraging educators to use robotics as a vehicle for multiliteracies. This chapter will provide compelling, practical evidence of the multimodal nature of robotics, highlighting the potential of robotics to encompass any or all of the linguistic, spatial, visual, audio and gestural elements of multiliteracies, as described by the New London Group (1996). The social and technological benefits for both genders arising from the integration of robotics into the curriculum, and their importance in a rapidly changing world are discussed, as is the need for educators to learn how to facilitate a learning environment that entices students to take risks and solve problems through the development of higherorder thinking skills. Robotics crosses curriculum boundaries, and engages and motivates students of all ages by making learning directed and real.

Education functions to upgrading, forming, character and develop civilization nation. Having the ability to think and actions to effective and creative in the realm of abstract and concrete can be used as self development independently. Students need to armed with critical thinking skills, systematic, logical, creative, and cooperate effectively to obtain, choose, and manage an information. Mathematics learning is directed to develop critical thinking skills and discussed open and objective because mathematics having strong and structure clear and links between the concept of the one with another concept. By analyzing learning needs of mathematics, formulate and designed a learning programs, choose a strategies and evaliated them correctly to get good results. The ability critical thinking is very important in studying new matter and that known way, and learn to ask effectively and reach a conclusion consistent with the facts. Mathematic learning with problem based learning is the concept of better used activity of the student during learning. In accordance with statements from Westwood (2008: 31) stated that PBL: 1) propel oneself directly in learning, 2) prepared students to critical thinking and analytical, 3) give opportunity to students to identify, find and use numerous this approuch in should think, 4) is the learning is very closely related to the real world and motivate students, 5) involving activeness in integrating information and skills of various the discipline, and 6) knowledge and strategy by the possibility of will be maintained and tranferred to the learning situation other, improve the ability to communicate and the social skills needed to cooperation and teamwork. By chance the learning process as an alternative in solving mathematical problems with using the ability critical think an to cultivate the scientific attitude of student.

School libraries, just like the school community, do reflect the social environment in which they operate. This is the story of the emergence of one such library, within Papua New Guinea and its development through the assistance of AUSAID. It looks at an idea – Resource Based Learning - which has enabled the local community to take ownership of a resource centre which will now be able to provide a true teaching/learning environment for all of the community. It is more than a collection of books! It has the beginnings of a vibrant active resource for the whole community.

Abstract- The review was affected by fundamental issues about how to best convey the learning material of Sociology. Team-Based Learning is accepted as a method of learning that can develop critical thinking skills. Team-Based Learning emphasizes opportunities for students to develop the ability to cooperate because it gives greater weight to the discussion (peer discussion) compared to learning by lecture method. This study aimed to determine whether a lecture or Team Based Learning teaches the content material better, develops skills, such as critical thinking; and creates a learning environment that is fun in learning Sociology. Data collection techniques in this study were conducted thorugh the study of literature from books and the results of previous research. The results of this study concluded that Team Based Learning method can improve oral communication and critical thinking skills, and create a more pleasant learning environment than lecture method. Keywords: Effectiveness, Team-based learning, Sociology Abstrak. Kajian ini dipengaruhi oleh isu mendasar tentang bagaimana cara terbaik dalam menyampaikan materi pembelajaran Sosiologi. Team-Based Learning diterima sebagai metode pembelajaran yang dapat mengembangkan kemampuan berpikir kritis. Team-Based Learning menekankan pada kesempatan bagi siswa untuk mengembangkan kemampuan bekerja sama karena memberi bobot lebih besar pada kegiatan diskusi (peer discussion) dibandingkan pembelajaran dengan metode ceramah. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui dari dua metode yaitu ceramah atau Team Based Learning, metode mana yang lebih baik dalam mengajarkan materi, mengembangkan keterampilan, seperti berpikir kritis; dan menciptakan lingkungan belajar yang menyenangkan dalam belajar Sosiologi. Teknik pengumpulan data dalam penelitian ini dilakukan melalui studi literatur hasil-hasil penelitian terdahulu. Hasil penelitian menyimpulkan bahwa metode Team Based Learning dapat meningkatkan komunikasi lisan dan kemampuan berpikir kritis, serta menciptakan lingkungan belajar yang lebih menyenangkan daripada metode ceramah.  Kata Kunci: keefektifan, pembelajaran berbasis kelompok, sosiologi

This study investigates how university students engage with their learning affordances in a contested environment due to the Coronavirus pandemic. This qualitative research employed a case study approach involving 136 participants. Data analysis was conducted using qualitative analysis as a circular process to describe, classify, and perceive the phenomenon and how the learning, affordances, and society were interconnected. The main framework of the research was the theory of affordance and how it was available for university students in their learning environment that changed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Data were collected in the first semester of 2020 through an online survey on Google form. The findings indicate the importance of the social environment to provide affordance for the students to adjust with them. Four kinds of affordances emerged from the study; internet affordance, assignment affordance, domestic affordance, and distance learning affordance. The role of the social environment is definitive in changing how students manage their affordances.

The aim of the research is to identify the effect of the interaction between the e-learning environment and the level of self-learning ability on critical thinking and achievement in mathematics among secondary school students. In order to achieve the objectives of the study, the researcher relied on the semi-experimental approach, where the research tools were in the measure of self-learning ability, electronic achievement test, After verifying the validity of the research tools and their consistency, they were applied to a sample of (35) female high school students in Taif, They were divided into the first two experimental groups (18) and the second (17) according to the level of self-learning ability (high and low). The first group is taught through a virtual e-learning environment and the other through a personal electronic learning environment. The data were processed using the SPSS statistical program and the research reached a number of results, the most important of which are: There was a statistically significant difference (0.05) among the average scores of the students in the post-test of the achievement test among the first experimental group using the virtual e-learning environment, and the general average (14.28) and the second experimental group using the personal e-learning environment and got a general average (15.39), and shows the difference in favor of the second experimental group. There was also no statistically significant difference (0.05) between the mean scores of the students of the two groups in the post-measurement scores of the Critical Thinking Skills Scale. A statistically significant difference (0.05) was found between the mean scores of the students of the experimental groups in the academic achievement and the critical thinking skills scale due to the main effect of the different level of self-learning ability (high / low) For students with high self-learning ability, There were no statistically significant differences at (0.05) between the mean scores of the students of the two groups due to interaction between the e-learning environment (virtual / personal) and the level of self-learning (high / low) in academic achievement and critical thinking skills. In the light of the results, a number of recommendations and suggestions were presented to enhance the critical thinking skills and the achievement of mathematics in secondary school students and in all educational stages, Including the awareness of teachers and teachers of the importance of using e-learning environments in achieving the desired educational goals and attention to the development of thinking skills in general and critical thinking skills in particular to ensure the efficiency of the process of learning and continuous learning process.

The aim of this study was to investigate the types of request strategies employed by Yemeni and Malay secondary school students in English language. It also aimed at investigating the influence of social power and social distance on the students’ choice of request strategies. The data was collected through a discourse completion test (DCT) and the analysis used both Blum-Kulk’s et al. (1989) Cross-Cultural Speech Act Realization Patterns (CCSARP), and Scollon and Scollon’s (1995) politeness system. The findings of the study showed that both groups often use non-conventionally indirect request strategies by means of query preparatory. The analysis revealed that both groups do not take into consideration the social power and the social distance between the interlocutors because they always use the same strategies with any person. The students have this sociopragmatic knowledge in their mother tongue; however, both groups are not sensitive to the social power and social distance existing between the interlocutors as they lack the sociopragmatic knowledge in the target language. Moreover, the students almost use the same strategies even though they have different cultural backgrounds, and this might be attributed to their assimilation in the school learning environment which is a positive indicator for conductive learning environment.
