This chapter analyzes the relationship between ownership structure and sustainability performance adopting the socioemotional wealth approach. This work extends previous literature on the topic by considering the three dimensions of sustainability performance: economic, social, and environmental. Analysis with the matching technique revealed that being a family firm has a positive effect on economic profitability, growth sales, employees training and commitment, investment in R&D, environmental commitment, and cooperation agreements with external partners. The authors use a sample of Spanish firms operating in the tourism industry.

This chapter analyses the relationship between ownership structure and leverage, providing an integrated theoretical approach that combines traditional financial theories, agency theory, and recently developed theories relating to non-financial preferences. The results show that, after controlling for endogeneity, being a family firm has a positive effect on the propensity to incur debt. These findings add to the existing body of literature and underline the need for a multi-theoretical approach when explaining the capital structure of family firms. The authors apply panel data methodology to control for individual heterogeneity of family firms. The chapter uses a sample of Spanish firms operating in the tourism industry.

The fields of frugal and reverse innovation as well as sustainability and its management have received tremendous interest in recent times. However, there is little literature on how both fields are related to each other. Hence, this paper gives an overview of research in both areas and provides a view of the relationship between frugal and reverse innovation, sustainability management and performance constructs. The link between frugal and reverse innovation on the one hand and sustainability performance on the other hand is established through a differentiated perspective on dimensions representing different fields of sustainability management, i.e. the sustainability of resources used in value creation, the sustainability of the actual value creation processes, and the sustainability of the outcomes of value creation processes. Moreover, we also argue for a positive link between the three dimensions of sustainability management and a company’s market performance.

This study aims to examine the engagement as a mediating variable of the relationship between personality and communication with satisfaction. This study was conducted at business school in Indonesia with 307 students who are still active as a respondent. Survey research was conducted over four months by questionnaire that has been well-established that was taken and modified from previous studies. The results of this study indicate that student engagement mediates the relationship between personality and communication as independent variables and satisfaction as the dependent variable. Extroversion personality and communication significantly positive effect on student engagement in all three dimensions (vigor, dedication, and absorption). In addition, this study also showed that engagement and satisfaction are two different variables, but correlated, and there was no difference in terms of gender differences involvement.

Purpose The study aims to investigate the relationship between aggregate and individual dimensions of sustainability and financial and stock market performances of the firms in the travel and tourism industry (TTI) across different geographies. Design/methodology/approach The sample under study consists of 146 firms belonging to TTI that have consistently obtained environmental, social and governance (ESG) rating over the period 2011–2017 as a part of Thomson Reuters Asset 4 ESG database. An empirical multivariate panel data model is developed to analyse the impact of sustainability (ESG) on firm profitability and market value within three tourism-related industries (transportation, hotel and leisure). Findings The study extends the existing literature by investigating the impact of each of the vital dimensions of sustainability performance – ESG – and examines how each dimension would affect financial performance and market value among firms within three tourism-related industries (transportation, hotel and leisure). Among the three tourism industries, hotel industry is observed to have the highest ESG compliance, followed by the transportation industry. Based on the agency and stakeholder theory, the authors hypothesized all ESG components to have significant positive effect on the financial and stock market performance; however, the results reveal that each dimension has different impact on financial performance and market value of firms in the tourism industry. Research limitations/implications The study could help firms in the travel and tourism industries to understand which of the dimension of ESG activities is significantly important for their financial and stock market performance. Originality/value The unique contribution of this study is that it considers wider definition of the term “Sustainability” and examines the relationship between financial and stock market performances of the firms and each component of ESG. This is one of the few studies at the global level that provides much needed evidence in the area of sustainability performance by the travel and tourism firms.

This paper applies a more robust methodology in industry-adjustment on measuring firm performance as related to ownership structure. We consider insider ownership, institutional ownership, and blockholder ownership. Even after controlling for the endogeneity of insider ownership, we still find positive effect of insider ownership on firm performance, which is conflicting with results found by other recent studies. We find a non-linearity in the relationship between insider ownership and firm performance, but our results do not support a relationship as neat as the inverse U-shape effect found by earlier studies. Our results indicate that the effects of the insider and square of insider on performance are positive, yet the effect of the cubic of insider ownership on firm performance is negative. As no other study based on U.S. data used the cubic of insider ownership and document its effect, our finding is new. We find strong negative effect of blockholder ownership on firm performance, and our results indicate that institutional investors are efficient monitors whose existence helps improving firm value and protecting outside minority shareholders.

This study was conducted to examine the effect of proxied ownership structure using institutional ownership, foreign ownership and managerial ownership variables which are moderated by the characteristics of the board of commissioners as proxied by the size of the board of commissioners, and the proportion of independent board of commissioners on company performance as measured by the firm's financial performance. Proxied by return on assets and return on equity and firm value proxied by Tobin's Q and market to book ratio. With a total of 81 samples from financial service companies listed on the IDX in 2018 tested using WarpPLS 7.0, the researchers found that ownership structure has a negative effect on financial performance and firm value, the characteristics of the board of commissioners have a positive effect on financial performance and firm value, and only interaction characteristics the board of commissioners in the relationship between ownership structure and financial performance which can be a moderating variable. Keywords: Ownership Structure, Firm Performance, and Characteristics of The Board of Commissioners.

Landscape perception, attitude and its impact on humans are the topics of modern geography study. Taking the grassland of central Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region as an example, the perception and attitude of grassland tourism landscape and their relations are analyzed by components analysis and multiple regression analysis. It is revealed that tourists perceive grassland landscape from three dimensions: national culture, tourism hospitality and natural landscape. All of the tourists' assessment for the perception and attitude to grassland tourism landscape are positive. The analysis of the relationship between tourists landscape perception and attitude showed that only seven out of twenty landscape perception items influence tourists' landscape image, satisfaction, recommendation intention and the willingness to revisit. The article verified that selectiveness was one of the most important characteristic of tourism landscape perception. Thus the advantage and disadvantage factors in the development of tourism destination could be distinguished according to the assessment of the landscape perception. As a result of the research, the demand of the tourism market has been made so clearer that it will provide a useful reference to the healthy development of grassland tourism industry.

PurposeThe implementation of reverse logistics (RL) as a strategic decision has gained significant attention amongst organisations due to its benefits to sustainable development. The purpose of this paper is to provide a comprehensive review of the literature to evaluate the performance of the RL process based on the three dimensions of sustainability including environmental, economic and social aspects.Design/methodology/approachContent analysis was adopted to collect and analyse the information.FindingsThe findings of this research show that most of the studies have focused on the performance evaluation of RL by considering the factors associated with economic and environmental performance. The social aspect of RL has been overlooked and requires investigation due to its contribution to positive social outcomes. In addition, no research has been conducted to assess the impact of each of the disposition options on the triple-bottom-line sustainability performance in one study.Originality/valueAlthough RL can make a significant contribution to improving the sustainability performance of firms, little research has been undertaken on exploring the relationship between RL and sustainability performance. This paper provides practitioners, academics and researchers a broad and complete view of the relationship between RL and sustainability performance with suggestion for future research.
