The creation of university spin-off firms (USOs) to commercialize the academic research outputs contributes to the economic development of the regions. These firms are often resource-constrained, which may hamper their growth. However, the involvement of venture capital (VC) partners in their management can partly counterbalance their traditional lack of resources. Within the USOs created in Portugal and Spain, around one-third operate in the information and communication technology industry (ICT-USOs). This chapter aims to explore the effect of VC partners on the ICT-USOs' growth by using a sample of 127 Spanish and 176 Portuguese ICT-USOs over the period 2007–2013. The results show that the effect of VC on the ICT-USOs' growth depends not only on the country, but also on how firm growth is measured; whereas a weak positive effect on the sales growth is found, a negative one is obtained in the case of the employment growth.

Since the birth of 5G, it has attracted much attention from all countries in the world. The development of 5G industry is particularly important for domestic economic development. 4G changes life, 5G changes society. 5G will not only accelerate the speed of people surfing the Internet, but also bring revolutionary changes to all aspects of social life, making people's lives, work and entertainment more convenient and diverse. The economic impact of the development of the 5G industry on China cannot be underestimated. Nowadays, information and communication technology has increasingly become a new driving force for economic development. 5G technology has already become a key technology pursuit for countries to compete for the status of world power, and it has also become an indispensable part of contemporary economic and social development. We should give full play to the government's guiding role, and work with network giants to build a new platform for cooperation, promote coordinated industrial development, achieve win-win results, and promote economic and social prosperity and development.

Information and communication technology (ICT) allows users to access information without taking geographic position into account. These users are also unconstrained by time, volume, or format of the information. ICT applications have enormous potential as a tool for aiding development in countries such as Trinidad and Tobago. Telemedicine, which can provide medical services to persons in isolated places, in emergencies, to the homebound, or the physically challenged, is but one example. Mansell and Wehn de Montalvo (1998) noted that “ICT applications facilitate telemedicine” (p. 85), and that “economic development can be fostered by tele-working and tele-services in some developing countries” (p. 83).

Although the macroeconomic effects of information and communication technology (ICT) has been a topic of many debates in the literature over the past 20 years, the effect of ICT on terrorism is still largely unexplored. Using the Generalized Method of Moments (GMM) technique, this paper investigates the impact of ICT on terrorism on a panel of 49 African countries over the period 1998-2012. Two ICT indicators (Internet and Mobile) and four different but linked terrorism indicators (Domestic, transnational, unclear and total terrorisms) are used. The paper finds a significant positive effect of ICT on terrorism.

The main objective of this study is to analyse importance of e-commerce in economic growth process. Therefore in this paper the attempt is made to examine the economic implications of e-commerce in India and Canada. So we can have a comparative picture of the role of e-commerce in economic growth in developing country like India and a developed country, Canada. E-commerce includes use of Internet and Information and Communication Technology. Both Internet and Information and Communication Technology (ICT) are components of infrastructure. Development of infrastructure directly contributes to economic development. Therefore the objective of this paper is also to study the role of ICT and Internet in economic development of India and Canada.
