Entrepreneurial Work-Integrated Learning

After decades of decreasing long-term job security and ongoing global economic crises, attention on and interest in entrepreneurship have significantly increased among Gen Y and Gen Z students in higher education institutions around the world. The pedagogical potential of work-integrated learning (WIL) and the increased offering of entrepreneurship programs in higher education intersect in a field referred to as entrepreneurial WIL (EWIL). This field, where WIL pedagogy is applied to deliver the learning outcomes of entrepreneurship education, is discussed here. The unique features and associated challenges that EWIL presents, particularly when compared with traditional forms of WIL experiences, are also examined, from the framework of a case study conducted on an internship-based course offered in a Canadian university. This chapter contributes to an understanding of the various factors that should be considered when developing novel EWIL programs in higher education institutions.

There are many predicted changes for the future of work. These changes will have significant implications for the type of work that people will do and the careers they will have. The question for many higher education institutions is what can be done to support students in preparing for what is predicted to be a volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous (VUCA) future. In this chapter, work-integrated learning (WIL) will be explored as a model of education particularly useful in preparing students for a VUCA world. The chapter will examine one WIL program in particular, the University of Waterloo's co-op program, and consider how its design aligns and supports students in preparing for their future work.

Internationalization has become one of the hotly debated issues in higher education institutions due its role in competitive advantage. Countries around the world encourage their universities to engage in competition and cooperation on the local and global level, and this can't be achieved without internationalization. This chapter is proposed to shed light on a unique case study: internationalization of higher education in North Cyprus, which is a politically unrecognized country. To achieve the aim of this chapter, a survey from International Association of Universities (IAU) was adapted to evaluate the internationalization in the four largest and oldest universities in North Cyprus.

The ranking of higher education institutions is a growing phenomenon around the world, with ranking systems in place in more than 40 countries. The emergence of world ranking systems that compare higher education institutions across national boundaries and the proliferation of these since the past decade, are indeed a reality now, and are already exerting substantial influence on both short and long term developments of higher education institutions. Rankings are being used by a variety of stakeholders for different purposes. Rankings are no doubt, useful for fostering institutional strategic planning and management, and their communication externally as well as their own institutional community and the national interest.

Business leaders around the world are using emerging technologies to capitalize on data, to create business value and to compete effectively in a digitally driven world. Among them the risk assessment and the risk management, based on the assessment is a process which can be made using the available past historical data and applying Data Analytics. Although it is being implemented in different business domains, it is at a nascent stage. It is further new and emerging in the area of Education. This paper describes such a process followed in an educational institution of an engineering college and the use of data for risk management. Based on the processes followed, the performance of the students is seen to be improving in academic performance, placement, higher education and entrepreneurship. This also provides a good process and framework for taking strategic initiatives which will give long term benefits in the areas like research and outreach activities.

Higher education institutions (HEIs) in South Africa require teaching and learning to include work-integrated learning (WIL) within specific learning offerings. The different learning options provided by various faculties have unique and diverse procedures which justify different WIL approaches at HEIs. A lack of structure regarding the information management (IM) for WIL across departments results in different processes being followed, which can impact negatively on the optimal utilisation of WIL. Frameworks for IM for WIL, however, have been developed at international HEIs. Using a qualitative approach and phenomenological research design and working with these frameworks as well as the Theory of Motivated Information Management, the researchers collected data using semi-structured individual interviews and group discussions from the University of Cincinnati (UC) and the Northwestern University (NWU) in Illinois, United States (US). This article presents the findings of an IM framework from these two US universities. After research was conducted at a South African university, a conceptual framework was developed for the IM for WIL based on the framework from the international universities that may be implemented at HEIs in South Africa. With time this framework could betested in a number of settings that could lead to the development of a model for IM for WIL in the South African context. The article, however, reports on the findings of the two international universities only and the conceptual framework requires further testing and validation before it can be published.

Higher education institutions and universities represent a vital part of any society and are continuously faced with numerous new environmental and social challenges. Universities are moving toward corporatization, which calls for them to be good corporate citizens. In order to meet the expectations of the stakeholders, they need to adopt a social responsibility strategy just like other organizations. This chapter discusses how universities could achieve development, sustainability, and competitiveness through applying university social responsibility (USR). It presents a case study of USR, namely UNIC Mentor Youth Guidance Programme applied by the University of Nicosia in Cyprus. The initiative connects university students to at-risk youth, so that they act as agents of social change and mentors. The chapter describes the benefits, long-term effects, and impact of this particular USR activity, both for the organization itself and the various stakeholders.

Entrepreneurship education was introduced in Nigerian higher education institutions as a compulsory course for students regardless of area of specialization in 2006/2007 academic session. This paper investigates the impact of selected teaching pedagogies (Normal lecture, Case study, Meeting entrepreneurs, Expert lecture, Incubation facility, Business plan development, Industry tour, Group discussion, Entrepreneurial stories, and Live project) used in delivering these courses on student’s entrepreneurial intention. Data were collected during scheduled lecture period with the aid of questionnaire on 405 students of universities, colleges of education and polytechnics in the three regions of Northern Nigeria (The North-East, North-Central, and North-West). Proportionate stratified random sampling technique was applied to select the participants. Descriptive along with inferential statistics were used for the analysis. Ordinal logistic regression was used to estimate the impact of each of these courses on students’ entrepreneurial intention. Findings indicate that four out of the ten teaching pedagogies namely; Normal lecture, Case study, Expert lecture, and Incubation facility lead a positive and significant impact on students’ entrepreneurial intentions. Therefore, higher education institutions in Nigeria need to set specific entrepreneurship education goals and come up with an effective blend of both conventional and innovative teaching pedagogies, through which students’ mental and practical capabilities can be improved towards successful entrepreneurship. The study also recommends that the teaching pedagogies applied in entrepreneurship education area must be in alignment with the career interests of the students and with the objectives for which the course is offered.

In this work the considered concept of sustainability explores the relationships between economic development, environmental quality as well as social. Delineated by the UN in 1972, since then the subject has taken on great proportions, mainly due to its imminent urgency. In 2015 the theme was part of the UN's Sustainable Development Goals, making up the Agenda 2030. Recently, Higher Education Institutions have been compelled to offer their contributions, given their role in human formation. Considering GreenMetric's relevance since the beginning of its activities, its dimensions and indicators have offered relevant directions on the path of Sustainable Higher Education Institutions. Thus, the present work demonstrated, through the case study, how the dimensions and indicators proposed by GreenMetric could form part as an important strategic driver in the path of a Brazilian Higher Education Institution - Academic Center, located in the countryside of São Paulo State. Its registration at GreenMetric in 2019 allowed the same formulations of short, medium and long term strategies.

This study focuses on the issue of entrepreneurship education and the role of Higher Education Institutions (HEI) in the context of developing countries. More specifically it aims to understand how entrepreneurship education is being implemented in Mozambique and to identify the main barriers to the creation of companies promoted by/incubated in HEI with entrepreneurship education in their curricula. The paper includes theoretical discussion and the presentation of a case study. It begins with a literature review about the relationship between entrepreneurship and development followed by a discussion about entrepreneurship education in the context of developing countries and entrepreneurship education provided by HEI. The empirical study is focused in Mozambique. After a contextualization of entrepreneurship education in Mozambique, Mozambican HEI with entrepreneurship education are identified and their situation and difficulties concerning the implementation of entrepreneurship education are discussed. Data collection includes documental sources and interviews with HEI representatives of a sample of ten establishments of the universe of five public and private HEI with entrepreneurship education in Mozambique. Results indicate that lack of resources, trained/qualified teachers and cooperation networks with the business community and other relevant actors are the main barriers.
