Optimization has been an active area of research for several decades. As many real-world optimization problems become increasingly complex, better optimization algorithms are always needed. Recently, meta-heuristic global optimization algorithms have become a popular choice for solving complex and intricate problems, which are otherwise difficult to solve by traditional methods. This chapter reviews the recent applications of ant colony optimization (ACO) algorithm in the field of electrical power systems. Also, the progress of the ACO algorithm and its recent developments are discussed. This chapter covers the aspects like (1) basics of ACO algorithm, (2) progress of ACO algorithm, (3) classification of electrical power system applications, and (4) future of ACO for modern power systems application.

Nowadays the refining sector in Mexico needs to increase the quantity and quality of produced fuels by installing new process plants for gasoline and ultra low sulphur diesel. These plants require the provision of electricity and steam, among other services to function properly, which can be supplied by the power plants currently installed in each refinery through an expansion of their generation capacity. These power plants need to increase its production of electricity and steam at levels above their installed capacity, which involves the addition of new power generating equipment (gas or steam turbo-generators) as well as the raise of the electrical loads. Currently, the Mexican Petroleum Company (PEMEX) is planning to restructure their electrical and steam systems in order to optimally supply the required services for the production of high quality fuels. In this paper the present status of the original electrical power systems of the refineries is assessed and the electrical integration of new process plants in the typical schemes is analyzed. Also this paper shows the conceptual schemes proposed to restructure the electrical power system for two refineries and the strategic planning focused on implement the modifications required for the integration of new process plants that will demand about 20 MW for each refinery by 2014. The results of the analysis allowed to identify the current conditions of the electrical power systems in the oil refining industry or National Refining Industry (NRI), and thereby to offer technical solutions that could be useful to engineers facing similar projects.

Abstract This paper presents optimal preventive control actions using ant colony optimization (ACO) algorithm to mitigate the occurrence of voltage collapse in stressed power systems. The proposed objective functions are: minimizing the transmission line losses as optimal reactive power dispatch (ORPD) problem, maximizing the preventive control actions by minimizing the voltage deviation of load buses with respect to the specified bus voltages and minimizing the reactive power generation at generation buses based on control variables under voltage collapse, control and dependent variable constraints using proposed sensitivity parameters of reactive power that dependent on a modification of Fast Decoupled Power Flow (FDPF) model. The proposed preventive actions are checked for different emergency conditions while all system constraints are kept within their permissible limits. The ACO algorithm has been applied to IEEE standard 30-bus test system. The results show the capability of the proposed ACO algorithm for preparing the maximal preventive control actions to remove different emergency effects.

This paper addresses the redundancy allocation problem of multi-state series-parallel reliability structures where each subsystem can consist of maximum two types of redundant components. The objective is to minimize the total investment cost of system design satisfying system reliability constraint and the consumer load demand. The demand distribution is presented as a piecewise cumulative load curve. The configuration uses the binary components from a list of available products to provide redundancy so as to increase system reliability. The components are characterized by their feeding capacity, reliability and cost. A system that consists of elements with different reliability and productivity parameters has the capacity strongly dependent upon the selection of components constituting its structure. An ant colony optimization algorithm has been presented to analyze the problem and suggest an optimal system structure. The solution approach consists of a series of simple steps as used in early ant colony optimization algorithms dealing with other optimization problems and still proves efficient over the prevalent methods with regard to solutions obtained/computation time. Three multi-state system design problems have been solved for illustration.

Many of disasters are related to electrical power systems. They affect human life and economy. In order to reduce the negative impacts caused by the failure of electricity power system due to disasters and to create a robust electrical power system, selecting the best relay of electricity power is a must. This study identified the best protective relay of electrical power systems of PLN in Surakarta region by applying analytic hierarchy process (AHP), one of MCDM approaches, combined with fuzzy logic. Extent analysis approach was implemented to derive priorities of various criteria, sub-criteria and alternatives. Three relays being considered in the selection process are electromagnetic relay, digital relay and static relay. Four criteria in this study are techno-economy, fault frequency, protection of transmission line and advantage of relay over others. Meanwhile, five sub-criteria for each criterion are reliability, selectivity, sensitivity, working speed and efficient. Based on the criteria and sub-criteria, it can be inferred that in terms of four working areas of PLN management in Surakarta region, digital relay is seen as the best choice of relays.

One of the most critical infrastructures in the world is electrical power grids (EPGs). New threats affecting EPGs, and their different consequences, are analyzed in this survey along with different approaches that can be taken to prevent or minimize those consequences, thus improving EPG resilience. The necessity for electrical power systems to become resilient to such events is becoming compelling; indeed, it is important to understand the origins and consequences of faults. This survey provides an analysis of different types of faults and their respective causes, showing which ones are more reported in the literature. As a result of the analysis performed, it was possible to identify four clusters concerning mitigation approaches, as well as to correlate them with the four different states of the electrical power system resilience curve.

Ant colony optimization has been become a very useful method for combination optimization problems. Based on close connections between combination optimization and continuous optimization, nowadays some scholars have studied to apply ant colony optimization to continuous optimization problems, and proposed some continuous ant colony optimizations. To improve the performance of those continuous ant colony optimizations, here the principles of evolutionary algorithm and artificial immune algorithm have been combined with the typical continuous Ant Colony Optimization, and the adaptive Cauchi mutation and thickness selection are used to operate the ant individual, so a new Immunized Ant Colony Optimization is proposed.
