A New Multi-Objective Firework Algorithm to Solve the Multimodal Planning Network Problem

This article introduces a new approach called multi-objective firework algorithm (MFWA). The proposed approach allows for solving the multimodal transportation network problem (MTNP). The main goal is to develop a decision system that optimizes and determines the planning network of the multimodal transportation (PNMT) problem. The optimization involves reaching the efficient transport mode and multimodal path, in order to move from one country to another while satisfying the set of objectives. Moreover, the firework algorithm has distinct advantages in solving complex optimization problems and in obtaining a solution by a distributed and oriented research system. This approach presents a search way, which is different from the swarm intelligence-based stochastic search technique. For each firework, the process starts by exploding a firework in the sky. The search space is filled with a shower of sparks to get diversity solutions. This new approach proves their efficacy in solving the multi-objective problem, which is shown by the experimental results.

Recently, several new metaheuristic schemes have been introduced in the literature. Although all these approaches consider very different phenomena as metaphors, the search patterns used to explore the search space are very similar. On the other hand, second-order systems are models that present different temporal behaviors depending on the value of their parameters. Such temporal behaviors can be conceived as search patterns with multiple behaviors and simple configurations. In this paper, a set of new search patterns are introduced to explore the search space efficiently. They emulate the response of a second-order system. The proposed set of search patterns have been integrated as a complete search strategy, called Second-Order Algorithm (SOA), to obtain the global solution of complex optimization problems. To analyze the performance of the proposed scheme, it has been compared in a set of representative optimization problems, including multimodal, unimodal, and hybrid benchmark formulations. Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed SOA method exhibits remarkable performance in terms of accuracy and high convergence rates.

<p>Multifactorial Optimization (MFO) and Evolutionary Transfer Optimization (ETO) are new optimization challenging paradigms for which the multi-Objective Particle Swarm Optimization system (MOPSO) may be interesting despite limitations. MOPSO has been widely used in static/dynamic multi-objective optimization problems, while its potentials for multi-task optimization are not completely unveiled. This paper proposes a new Distributed Multifactorial Particle Swarm Optimization algorithm (DMFPSO) for multi-task optimization. This new system has a distributed architecture on a set of sub-swarms that are dynamically constructed based on the number of optimization tasks affected by each particle skill factor. DMFPSO is designed to deal with the issues of handling convergence and diversity concepts separately. DMFPSO uses Beta function to provide two optimized profiles with a dynamic switching behaviour. The first profile, Beta-1, is used for the exploration which aims to explore the search space toward potential solutions, while the second Beta-2 function is used for convergence enhancement. This new system is tested on 36 benchmarks provided by the CEC’2021 Evolutionary Transfer Multi-Objective Optimization Competition. Comparatives with the state-of-the-art methods are done using the Inverted General Distance (IGD) and Mean Inverted General Distance (MIGD) metrics. Based on the MSS metric, this proposal has the best results on most tested problems.</p>


A test blueprint/test template, also known as the table of specifications, represents the structure of a test. It has been highly recommended in assessment textbook to carry out the preparation of a test with a test blueprint. This chapter focuses on modeling a dynamic test paper template using multi-objective optimization algorithm and makes use of the template in dynamic generation of examination test paper. Multi-objective optimization-based models are realistic models for many complex optimization problems. Modeling a dynamic test paper template, similar to many real-life problems, includes solving multiple conflicting objectives satisfying the template specifications.

We present a deterministic non-gradient based approach that uses robustness measures in multi-objective optimization problems where uncontrollable parameter variations cause variation in the objective and constraint values. The approach is applicable for cases that have discontinuous objective and constraint functions with respect to uncontrollable parameters, and can be used for objective or feasibility robust optimization, or both together. In our approach, the known parameter tolerance region maps into sensitivity regions in the objective and constraint spaces. The robustness measures are indices calculated, using an optimizer, from the sizes of the acceptable objective and constraint variation regions and from worst-case estimates of the sensitivity regions’ sizes, resulting in an outer-inner structure. Two examples provide comparisons of the new approach with a similar published approach that is applicable only with continuous functions. Both approaches work well with continuous functions. For discontinuous functions the new approach gives solutions near the nominal Pareto front; the earlier approach does not.

During the last five years, several methods have been proposed for handling nonlinear constraints using evolutionary algorithms (EAs) for numerical optimization problems. Recent survey papers classify these methods into four categories: preservation of feasibility, penalty functions, searching for feasibility, and other hybrids. In this paper we investigate a new approach for solving constrained numerical optimization problems which incorporates a homomorphous mapping between n-dimensional cube and a feasible search space. This approach constitutes an example of the fifth decoder-based category of constraint handling techniques. We demonstrate the power of this new approach on several test cases and discuss its further potential.

Abstract Multi-objective decision making problems can sometimes involve an infinite number of objectives. In this paper, an approach is presented for solving multi-objective optimization problems containing an infinite number of parameterized objectives, termed “infinite objective optimization”. A formulation is given for infinite objective optimization problems and an approach for checking whether a Pareto frontier is a solution to this formulation is detailed. Using this approach, a new sampling based approach is developed for solving infinite objective optimization problems. The new approach is tested on several different example problems and is shown to be faster and perform better than a brute force approach.

There can be a complicated mapping relation between decision variables and objective functions in multi-objective optimization problems (MOPs). It is uncommon that decision variables influence objective functions equally. Decision variables act differently in different objective functions. Hence, often, the mapping relation is unbalanced, which causes some redundancy during the search in a decision space. In response to this scenario, we propose a novel memetic (multi-objective) optimization strategy based on dimension reduction in decision space (DRMOS). DRMOS firstly analyzes the mapping relation between decision variables and objective functions. Then, it reduces the dimension of the search space by dividing the decision space into several subspaces according to the obtained relation. Finally, it improves the population by the memetic local search strategies in these decision subspaces separately. Further, DRMOS has good portability to other multi-objective evolutionary algorithms (MOEAs); that is, it is easily compatible with existing MOEAs. In order to evaluate its performance, we embed DRMOS in several state of the art MOEAs to facilitate our experiments. The results show that DRMOS has the advantage in terms of convergence speed, diversity maintenance, and portability when solving MOPs with an unbalanced mapping relation between decision variables and objective functions.

In this paper, an improved hybrid Differential Evolution (DE) is proposed to enhance optimization performance by cooperating Dynamic Scaling Mutation (DSM) and Wrapper Local Search (WLS) schemes. When evolution speed is standstill, DSM can improve searching ability to achieve better balance between exploitation and exploration in the search space. Furthermore, WLS can disturb individuals to fine tune the searching range around and then properly find better solutions in the evolution progress. The effective particle encoding representation named Particle Segment Operation-Machine Assignment (PSOMA) that we previously published is also applied to always produce feasible candidate solutions for hybrid DE model to solve the Flexible Job-Shop Scheduling Problem (FJSP). To test the performance of the proposed hybrid method, the experiments contain five frequently used CEC 2005 numerical functions and three representative FJSP benchmarks for single-objective and multi-objective optimization verifications, respectively. Compare the proposed method with the other related published algorithms, the simulation results indicate that our proposed method exhibits better performance for solving most the test functions for single-objective problems. In addition, the wide range of Pareto-optimal solutions and the more Gantt chart diversities can be obtained for the multi-objective FJSP in practical decision-making considerations.
