Approaches and Principles for UX Web Experiences

The challenge of creating user experiences involves a panoply of multidisciplinary competences in terms of knowing tools, processes and the business itself. This study intends to identify and synthesize the main approaches and principles adopted by web design and e-business companies to create immersive user experiences. In order to achieve this objective, the authors conducted six semi-structured interviews with web design and e-business companies. They highlight that companies adopt specific-device design, responsive design and adaptive design approaches. Companies considered fundamental to attend technology life-cycle, heterogeneity of technologies and devices, identification of customer needs, relevance of test phase, scalability of applications, and accessibility and usability issues. Additionally, the customer experience testing is considered a key element to measure user experiences and companies expect that business and technological dimensions will be two key factors with future impact in their business.

Having an online presence is essential for any company regardless of its size and type of business. Users are currently striving to interact with companies through the web, regardless of their access device. In this sense, responsive web design emerged as a very useful technique that allows the dynamic adaptation of the design regardless of the size and resolution of the access device. Despite the unequivocal advantages associated with this technique, there are also limitations which turn this approach not feasible or advisable for all projects. This study, through the realization of five case studies, seeks to identify the main limitations of responsive design and responsive design frameworks. Additionally, this study suggests further development models that may be more effective in the dynamic adaptation of the design and contents according to the features of the access device, such as the adoption of adaptive design, use of native apps, and hybrid models.

Over the past decade, responsive web design (RWD) has become the de facto standard for adapting web pages to a wide range of devices used for browsing. While RWD has improved the usability of web pages, it is not without drawbacks and limitations: designers and developers must manually design the web layouts for multiple screen sizes and implement associated adaptation rules, and its "one responsive design fits all" approach lacks support for personalization. This paper presents a novel approach for automated generation of responsive and personalized web layouts. Given an existing web page design and preferences related to design objectives, our integer programming -based optimizer generates a consistent set of web designs. Where relevant data is available, these can be further automatically personalized for the user and browsing device. The paper includes presentation of techniques for runtime adaptation of the designs generated into a fully responsive grid layout for web browsing. Results from our ratings-based online studies with end users (N = 86) and designers (N = 64) show that the proposed approach can automatically create high-quality responsive web layouts for a variety of real-world websites.

RNA-binding proteins (RBPs) are key elements involved in post-transcriptional regulation. Ataxin-2 (ATXN2) is an evolutionarily conserved RBP protein, whose function has been studied in several model organisms, from Saccharomyces cerevisiae to the Homo sapiens. ATXN2 interacts with poly(A) binding proteins (PABP) and binds to specific sequences at the 3′UTR of target mRNAs to stabilize them. CTC-Interacting Domain3 (CID3) and CID4 are two ATXN2 orthologs present in plant genomes whose function is unknown. In the present study, phenotypical and transcriptome profiling were used to examine the role of CID3 and CID4 in Arabidopsis thaliana. We found that they act redundantly to influence pathways throughout the life cycle. cid3cid4 double mutant showed a delay in flowering time and a reduced rosette size. Transcriptome profiling revealed that key factors that promote floral transition and floral meristem identity were downregulated in cid3cid4 whereas the flowering repressor FLOWERING LOCUS C (FLC) was upregulated. Expression of key factors in the photoperiodic regulation of flowering and circadian clock pathways, were also altered in cid3cid4, as well as the expression of several transcription factors and miRNAs encoding genes involved in leaf growth dynamics. These findings reveal that ATXN2 orthologs may have a role in developmental pathways throughout the life cycle of plants.

India has long been known for its prestigious Mumbai-based film industry, namely Bollywood, and remains by far the largest producer of films in the world. With the growing global reach of Indian cinema, this study looks at an intriguing Indian-film fever over the last decade in the newly discovered market of China. Through examining key factors that make Indian films appealing to Chinese and exploring the opportunities and challenges of Indian cinema in China, this article draws upon insights gained from the narratives of local audiences. Data were collected from semi-structured interviews with 32 Indian-film audiences residing across 14 different cities in mainland China. Thematic analysis identified the following five appealing factors, which explain why the Chinese enjoy Indian films: content-driven story, social values, star power, audience reviews and cultural connections. While a comprehensive list of opportunities was derived showing the potential future of Bollywood in China, results found that China’s unique institutional context and an ongoing India–China geopolitical tensions also present challenges, which in turn add to the overall complexity of films’ success in the Chinese market. This article argues the powerful role of Bollywood in bridging cultures and improving India–China ties, as Indian films have made Chinese people more aware of India in a favourable way.

Technological transfer is a complex and varied process, being realized out at different stages of technology readiness level. Being essentially a trading, technology transfer is fully subject to market laws. The technology transfer strategy and tactics are strongly influenced by the degree of technology's readiness level, systemic character, functional orientation and universality, technical and economic determination degrees that can be specified and determined in accordance with the stages of technology life cycle.

Purpose – The purpose of this study is to relate the practice of organisational learning in small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to the organisational life cycle (OLC), contextualising the differential aspects of an integrated relationship between them. Design/methodology/approach – It is a mixed-method study with two consecutive phases. In Phase I, 30 Hong Kong SMEs identified through theoretical sampling were classified into three life-cycle stages – inception, high growth and maturity. In Phase II, their employees’ learning practices (grouped by learning levels) were statistically compared using the analysis of variance and then followed up for confirmation with qualitative semi-structured interviews. Findings – This study uniquely suggests the nature of a relationship between SME organisational learning and the OLC. Empirical results show that three of the four learning levels (individual, group, organisational and inter-organisational) practised in SMEs are varied in importance between life-cycle stages. Research limitations/implications – Comparative studies are encouraged in other parts of the world to strengthen the findings – with either SMEs or large organisations. Practical implications – The study informs SME owner/managers about what is important for employee learning at different business stages so that appropriate learning strategies or human resource development policies can be formulated in a timely fashion to promote competitiveness. Originality/value – It is among the first studies to connect SME learning with organisational growth. The relationships found serve as a sound foundation for further empirical investigations.
