Framework of Competencies for Internationalizing Engineering Curriculum

The globalization of corporate activities requires corporations to function through their international network of subsidiaries and has major implications for engineering education. Hence, it is imperative that engineering students have a global view of engineering practice because engineering solutions have impact across geographical borders. The cultural, geographic, social, and economic realities of the global economy require that modern engineers be competent in foreign language and culture in order to succeed in the global business environment. Equipping engineering students with social and cultural competencies would provide students, who may potentially work on international assignments, with the ability to collaborate with foreign nationals and successfully function in a global engineering environment. This paper examines the impact of globalization on engineering and technology education and discusses the competencies required to ensure that engineering and technology students are adequately prepared to make them more effective in foreign environments.

Today, Supply Chain Management (SCM) is regarded as an essential strategic factor, which has a great deal of influence on earning competitiveness in global business environment. There are conflicts among all members of the SCM. In order to maximize the total profit of the SCM, negotiation among all members is necessary. For enterprise in the supply chain, the supply chain partnership has become a significant factor affecting firm performance. In this paper, I examine the impact of cooperation between enterprise and its supply chain partners. Specifically, I collect survey data from Chinese manufacturing firms about their relations with partners and use regression analysis to test hypotheses about the associations between firm performance and supply chain partnership. My results support that superior supplier partnership has a positive impact on reducing transaction costs and improving financial and market performance. In additional test, I establish a series of models with interactive terms. The results of additional test indicate that the impact is enhanced if the competition of each sub industry of the manufacturing industry is different. Above all, I put forward the following suggestions. Enterprise managers could establish an evaluation mechanism of suppliers and retailers, which select high-quality cooperative partners and reduce low-quality transaction costs for enterprises. When participating in business operation, shareholders could comprehensively understand the business conditions of various supply partners and choose reliable supply chain partners for investment. Also, the government can guide the realization of resource sharing and information exchange among supply chain enterprises, which is beneficial to create a more competitive supply chain to promote economic development.

In the rapidly changing global business environment, it can be seen that supply chain designs based solely on efficiency and speed do not necessarily lead to a sustainable competitive advantage. According to Lee (2004), this can only be done if supply chains are designed to incorporate the Triple A: Agility, Adaptability and Alignment. Although Lee provided some examples, to date his claim has not been empirically tested, which is essential. A number of studies have looked at the three component parts of the Triple A separately, but as yet no studies have focused on all three Triple A components concurrently, or on the impact they have on business performance. The main aim of this chapter is to determine the dimensions and factors that characterize these variables, in order to empirically test the accuracy of Lee’s claim.

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to identify the factors, such as the different strategies adopted and the size of the company, that have a significant determining impact on the financial performance of companies in extreme circumstances.Design/methodology/approachThe research target of this paper is the small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in Hong Kong. This is quantitative research and it is done on a survey basis, which includes hypothesis setting and statistical analysis. In addition, constructive suggestions are given to companies after analyzing the current situation.FindingsIn total, ten factors from four dimensions are determined as the critical strategies for the company to adopt in an uncertain financial situation. The result shows the influence of different factors on return on investment for the companies with different backgrounds.Practical implicationsThe business environment today is full of turbulence and uncertainties; this, along with the fierce global competition, means that manufacturers are all struggling to survive. The financial tsunami that has swept across the global economy is believed to be the most catastrophic in living memory. Therefore, this research will be especially valuable and useful to companies which wish to achieve excellence in business performance in spite of such a global disaster.Originality/valueManufacturers worldwide have suffered badly from the impact of the financial tsunami. The SMEs in Hong Kong are certainly not an exception. However, under the same adverse conditions, some have been able to maintain their stability or even thrive. The findings suggest some specific corporate strategies which will enable companies to survive and remain competitive.

Internal and external risk management has become an important issue in today's global business environment, which is fraught with health, natural, political, economic and technical threats. This article deals with the design of a methodology for problem-solving and risk management in connection with computer simulation. The risk management methodology proposed by us consists of individual steps, which are summarized into three stages - risk assessment, risk analysis and risk management. The proposed computer simulation methodology consists of several steps, for example creating a parametric simulation model, designing experiments, analysis of the simulation model results or the evaluation of the simulation results. These steps are described in the article. After completing the previous steps, we describe the points of an action plan and what it must contain to avoid consequences and the impact of risks at the lowest possible level. An example of the use of computer simulation is the risk situation associated with the fluctuation of employees. In the end, the proposed methodology is supported by the results of our research and its further direction.

PurposeIn today's global business environment, international assignments have become integral part of employee's job profile. Adaptation to a different cultural environment plays a role in affecting employee's performance. In such a situation, cultural intelligence plays an important role. In order to sustain in a diverse work setting, a global organization entails managers who are sensitive to different cultural requirements. Factors affecting cultural intelligence have been a major area of study. However, studies relating short-term foreign trips and their role on four aspect of cultural intelligence are lacking. Therefore, present study was undertaken to know role of foreign visits in affecting cultural intelligence among professionals of diverse background.Design/methodology/approachThe present study is a primary study conducted for a sample of 120 respondents divided into two groups. One group comprised professionals having experience of foreign visits while other group comprised professionals who had not visited a foreign country. We use Levene’s Test for equality of variances was applied to assess the difference of variation of cultural intelligence between two different groups of respondents.FindingsThe results revealed that short-term trips play a significant role in affecting metacognitive, cognitive and motivational components of cultural intelligence. However, behavior cultural intelligence is not affected by short-term trips significantly.Research limitations/implicationsOutcome of present research forms basis for future studies that can be conducted linking long-term trips and culture intelligence. This study is practically useful for improving cultural intelligence of professionals to enhance their success and effectiveness in international assignments.Originality/valueThe study adds novelty to the field of cultural intelligence as prior studies were lacking in relating role of short-term trips on four different components of cultural intelligence.

This paper explores the impact of web-based e-business operations on client firm processes and accounting methods, and addresses related issues for accounting firm assurance services teams to consider. In particular, some of the complications and potential problems associated with the use of traditional assurance methods on e-businesses with digital operating environments are discussed. The flexibility required to respond to the everchanging business environment of e-enabled client firms will require accounting firm leaders to rethink and reengineer existing management structures and practices. While clients of accounting firms are realizing tremendous value by streamlining information flows and increasing information sharing internally and externally, accounting firms remain organized primarily into discreet functions that often compete internally for customers. An e-business model, the Customer-Oriented Value Chain, is employed to frame the discussion of emerging accounting issues resulting from new digital business practices. Within this context we develop 16 propositions regarding potential methods accounting firms may consider applying for two purposes: (1) better alignment of traditional assurance practices with client firm e-business activities, and (2) better integration of existing assurance offerings. Subsequently, the challenges associated with offering integrated assurance services given current accounting firm organizational structures is discussed and a model of suggested organizational changes to accounting firms is presented. This model is inspired by the CPA Vision Project, the AICPA's Certified Information Technology Professional (CITP) designation, and the new Global Business Credential initiatives, and is intended to serve as a prototype upon which to build improved organizational structures. Some of the potential benefits of reorganization and better services integration include more efficient use of firm resources, greater profitability, more efficient associate training, a clearer understanding of client business processes, and greater value provision to clients.

Data warehouses have established themselves as necessary components of an effective IT strategy for large businesses. To augment the streams of data being siphoned from transactional/operational databases warehouses must also integrate increasing amounts of external data to assist in decision support. Modern warehouses can be expected to handle up to 100 Terabytes or more of data. (Berson and Smith, 1997; Devlin, 1998; Inmon 2002; Imhoff et al, 2003; Schwartz, 2003; Day 2004; Peter and Greenidge, 2005; Winter and Burns 2006; Ladley, 2007). The arrival of newer generations of tools and database vendor support has smoothed the way for current warehouses to meet the needs of the challenging global business environment ( Kimball and Ross, 2002; Imhoff et al, 2003; Ross, 2006). We cannot ignore the role of the Internet in modern business and the impact on data warehouse strategies. The web represents the richest source of external data known to man ( Zhenyu et al, 2002; Chakrabarti, 2002; Laender et al, 2002) but we must be able to couple raw text or poorly structured data on the web with descriptions, annotations and other forms of summary meta-data (Crescenzi et al, 2001). In recent years the Semantic Web initiative has focussed on the production of “smarter data”. The basic idea is that instead of making programs with near human intelligence, we rather carefully add meta-data to existing stores so that the data becomes “marked up” with all the information necessary to allow not-sointelligent software to perform analysis with minimal human intervention. (Kalfoglou et al, 2004) The Semantic Web builds on established building block technologies such as Unicode, URIs(Uniform Resource Indicators) and XML (Extensible Markup Language) (Dumbill, 2000; Daconta et al, 2003; Decker et al, 2000). The modern data warehouse must embrace these emerging web initiatives. In this paper we propose a model which provides mechanisms for sourcing external data resources for analysts in the warehouse.

Modern processes of economic development of business systems occur under the influence of the global environment, which requires constant monitoring, analysis, diagnosis and corrective action. The subject of research in the article is the development of business systems in the context of globalization. The purpose of the study is to study the impact of global development trends on business systems. To achieve this goal, the following tasks are set: to clarify the concept of "global environment"; to describe the structure of the global business environment; to determine its features; to outline the directions of diagnostics of the global environment; to characterize the factors influencing the global environment; to identify key parameters of development the global business environment; to identify trends in the global environment based on international ratings and development forecasts; to identify key factors that ensure changes in the global environment in order to form and implement strategies for business systems in the global environment. The research used methods of analysis, synthesis, comparison, systematization, generalization, system approach. The following results were obtained: it is proved that business systems operating in international markets constantly need to collect and summarize information about the global environment, comprehensive assessment of business environment parameters, identify trend changes in order to form and implement business strategy. Conclusions: identifying trends in the global environment ensures the stable state of the business system, its competitiveness, performance. The study of the impact of the global business environment on the activities of business systems allows for a comprehensive assessment, as well as to determine the priority factors of formation depending on the areas, areas of activity, types of business.

International business decisions to be taken by executive managers of multinational firms are becoming more challenging due to uncertainties in business environment which is due to fast changing and unpredictable domestic, foreign, and global environment for long term sustainability. Even though firms are cautious and take precautions while taking decisions on international investment for production and marketing, their sustainability for a long time in a given business is shaking due to continuous changes in domestic, foreign, and global business environment. This is mainly due to variations in economic conditions, political scenarios, sociocultural environment, technological breakthroughs, legal aspects and human behavioural effects on opportunities and challenges on the international business performance of multinational firms. In this paper, we have studied in brief, the various domestic, foreign, and global environmental issues which affects the multinational firm’s business decisions related to international investments and marketing. The paper also discusses the impact of the domestic environment, foreign environment, and global environment on economical, political, technological, legal, and cultural issues on investment and expansion decisions of multinational corporations in general.
