Developing a Reflective Competence for a Master’s Level Programme on E-Learning

This study examines the effects of an activity of reflection on a group of students enrolled in the Master for Intercultural Education and European dimension of distance education, who participated in the construction of the model for a “reflection participant” and a self-evaluation tool to be used for training teachers. The activity is part of the research carried out within the Leonardo da Vinci “REFLECT” - “reflective practice for training the trainers” - Reflective Practice and VET (Vocational Education and Training), aimed at the creation of a specific methodology for the implementation of reflective practices in VET contexts, so that new processes of updating and re-professionalization required by the challenges of today’s society can be started. It envisaged the creation of a testing laboratory, organized within the Faculty of Education at the University of Valle d’Aosta, which brings together teaching and research functions, contemplating an experiment involving the direct training of educators and teachers and demonstrating how to make a significant change in the actors who take part in the process. The study results show that it is possible to develop, enhance and strengthen skills through reflective mode online. The study indicates in post-treatment that the impact of such differences is based on the contextual features of the training.

This project began in response to a perceived need to assess students’ perceptions with respect to the emerging use of audience response systems (clickers) in several mid- to large-size undergraduate courses at the University of Victoria. We developed and validated a “Clicker Use Survey” to gather students’ opinions with respect to clicker utility and the impact of clicker use on their learning. With the collected data we generated a set of baseline distributions to support assessment of various clicker use protocols and created a self-evaluation tool to share with instructors to support teacher reflection on the efficacy of their clicker practices. We also provided a sample self-evaluation to model the use of the tool. Links to the survey instrument, baseline data and self-evaluation tool, and sample self-evaluation are provided.

Effective, meaningful and balanced use of information communication technologies (ICT) for teaching and learning is essential for meeting challenges of 21st century; however, practices of blended learning (a combination of face-to-face and online instruction) in Latvia are rather developed by particular teachers than organized as evidence-based policies of ICT integration in teaching and learning at schools. The research is aimed to explore the issues related to setting up blended learning as school policy from leadership perspective, and is designed as the case study by combining: 1) piloting results of the program “Curriculum design for Blended Learning” for leadership teams (5 secondary schools in Latvia); 2) developing the self-evaluation tool for school readiness for blended learning; 3) analysis of the main leadership challenges for setting up blended learning in schools. The study results contribute ongoing processes of introducing blended learning at schools by linking both leadership, management and pedagogical perspectives.

Clinical pathways are used as a method of organizing care processes. Although they are used worldwide, the concept remains unclear, with little understanding of what exactly is being implemented. A recent systematic review revealed that, although a tool exists to score the instrumental qualities of clinical pathways, no tools are available to assess how the clinical pathway influences the process of care. These tools are needed for a better understanding of the impact of clinical pathways on the length of hospital stay and patient outcomes. In this study, a Care Process Self-Evaluation Tool (CPSET), based on the clinical pathway concept, for assessing the organization of the process of care has been developed and tested. Qualitative and quantitative methods, involving 885 professionals and patients, were used in the development and validation. The CPSET is a valid and reliable 29-item instrument for assessing how the process of care is organized. The CPSET has five subscales: patient-focused organization, coordination of care, communication with patients and family, cooperation with primary care and monitoring/follow-up of the care process. The CPSET can be used in the audit and accreditation of care processes and will help managers and clinicians to understand better how care processes are organized.

In this paper, a self-evaluation tool is developed to allow educators and Higher Education Institutions to assess their efforts in pursuing Education for Sustainable Development. The composite index here proposed allows the individual components that contribute to the pursuit of sustainability in education to be grasped in isolation and, at the same time, provides an overall evaluation measure of all the elements taken into consideration. The index is based on the identification of elements that measure the efficiency of the allocated expenditure. At the same time, it encompasses measures of the impact and perception of sustainability concept  by  staff  and students.  Albeit in a laborious way, the application of the tool leads to an unbiased assessment of education for sustainable development results. This composite indicator can be used in a replicative manner elsewhere and offers the advantage of being able to carry out comparative evaluative analyses. This is due to its adaptive flexibility.

Some recent studies have focused on specific form of leadership, entitled water-like leadership (WLL), which is based on the Daoist doctrine. Specifically, this research presents a strategic non-agency (SNA) measurement scale which refers to the Daoist principle of Wu Wei. In a first study, results reveal that SNA was associated with self-consciousness, situationism, action / inaction attitude, WLL and Daoist thinking style (DTS) from the point of view of self-evaluation. In the second study, results reveal that SNA was linked to certain forms of organizational culture as well as to WLL and DTS from the point of view of hetero-evaluation. In a third study, results reveal that SNA was associated with positive states of health and performance at work. Overall, these studies establish the validity of this new measure of SNA and invite to explore the impact of SNA in the workplace and in other spheres of life.

Abstract. A broad range of literature reported higher rates of psychopathology and personality disorders among patients affected by skin conditions. Specifically, depression, anxiety, and suicidal ideations are more frequently reported by patients affected by skin diseases. This study aimed to examine psychopathology and personality in a group of patients affected by psoriasis by means of a self-report measure (Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory – MCMI-III) and a performance-based technique (Wartegg Drawing Completion Test [WDCT], CWS). Study results showed a higher rate of passive-aggressiveness and paranoia among psoriatic patients (MCMI-III). When assessing patients through the performance-based technique (WDCT, CWS), a higher rate of global rejection (GR) – linked by previous literature to suicidal ideation – and a lower affective quality of the drawings emerged. We discuss the clinical importance of detecting psychological issues in dermatology patients by means of a multimethod assessment that goes beyond patients’ self-evaluation of their symptoms and emotions.

This study uses the DEA (Data Envelopment Analysis) method to estimate the technical efficiency index of 34 Vietnamese commercial banks in the period 2007-2015, and then it analyzes the impact of income diversification on the operational efficiency of Vietnamese commercial banks through a censored regression model - the Tobit regression model. Research results indicate that income diversification has positive effects on the operational efficiency of Vietnamese commercial banks in the research period. Based on study results, in this research some recommendations forpolicy are given to enhance the operational efficiency of Vietnam’s commercial banking system.
