Abstract. This paper describes the design of a general purpose multifunction simulator which is used to test radar and its components. The simulator is a hardware system controlled by computer software which generates echoes of targets, clutter and jamming for radar electromagnetic environment scenario simulation. It will responds to the subject radar’s antenna scan by producing composite echoes in real time. Computer programs are used to management the simulation process and allow various combinations of electromagnetic environment. Parallel signal generator is exploited to increase the execution speed and achieve real-time performance. Since the simulator can produce video frequency and intermediate frequency echo separately it can be used for the test of most components of radar. The capability to accommodate dynamic scenarios of long duration in real time for detailed tracking studies distinguishes the simulator from other pulse-by-pulse simulators that have been previously reported.

Perimeter control is used to regulate transfer flows between urban regions. The greedy control (GC) method takes either the minimum or the maximum for the control inputs. Although it has the advantage of simplicity for real-time feasibility, a few existing studies have shown that it can sometimes have negative impacts because of unnecessary transfer flow restrictions. To reduce unnecessary restrictions, this study provides a method that gives flexibility to ease the strict conditions of the conventional GC. First, we propose a modification as a way of granting exceptions to the flow restriction under specific conditions. Second, we develop an algorithm to determine the threshold dynamically for accepting the exception, by comparing the possible outflow loss of the subject region and the possible outflow gain of its neighboring regions. The test results show that this flexible greedy control can handle the balance between the transfer demands and the greed of regions for securing the supply level, while increasing the performance in both vehicle hours traveled and trip completion.

The ARINC 653 operation system is currently widely adopted in the avionics industry, and has become the mainstream architecture in avionics applications because of its strong agility and reliability. Although ARINC 653 can efficiently reduce the weight and energy consumption, it results in a serious development and verification problem for avionics systems. As ARINC 653 is non-open source software and lacks effective support for software testing and debugging, it is of great significance to build a real-time simulation platform for ARINC 653 on general-purpose operating systems, improving the efficiency and effectiveness of system development and implementation. In this paper, a virtual ARINC 653 platform is designed and realized by using real-time simulation technology. The proposed platform is composed of partition management, communication management, and health monitoring management, provides the same operation interfaces as the ARINC 653 system, and allows dynamic debugging of avionics applications without requiring the actual presence of real devices. Experimental results show that the platform not only simulates the functionalities of ARINC 653, but also meets the real-time requirements of avionics applications.

Abstract This paper describes the combination of strategies deployed to optimize horizontal well placement in a 40 ft thick isotropic sand with very low resistivity contrast compared to an underlying anisotropic shale in Semoga field. These strategies were developed due to previously unsuccessful attempts to drill a horizontal well with multiple side-tracks that was finally drilled and completed as a high-inclined well. To maximize reservoir contact of the subject horizontal well, a new methodology on well placement was developed by applying lessons learned, taking into account the additional challenges within this well. The first approach was to conduct a thorough analysis on the previous inclined well to evaluate each formation layer’s anisotropy ratio to be used in an effective geosteering model that could better simulate the real time environment. Correct selections of geosteering tools based on comprehensive pre-well modelling was considered to ensure on-target landing section to facilitate an effective lateral section. A comprehensive geosteering pre-well model was constructed to guide real-time operations. In the subject horizontal well, landing strategy was analysed in four stages of anisotropy ratio. The lateral section strategy focused on how to cater for the expected fault and maintain the trajectory to maximize reservoir exposure. Execution of the geosteering operations resulted in 100% reservoir contact. By monitoring the behaviour of shale anisotropy ratio from resistivity measurements and gamma ray at-bit data while drilling, the subject well was precisely landed at 11.5 ft TVD below the top of target sand. In the lateral section, wellbore trajectory intersected two faults exhibiting greater associated throw compared to the seismic estimate. Resistivity geo-signal and azimuthal resistivity responses were used to maintain the wellbore attitude inside the target reservoir. In this case history well with a low resistivity contrast environment, this methodology successfully enabled efficient operations to land the well precisely at the target with minimum borehole tortuosity. This was achieved by reducing geological uncertainty due to anomalous resistivity data responding to shale electrical anisotropy. Recognition of these electromagnetic resistivity values also played an important role in identifying the overlain anisotropic shale layer, hence avoiding reservoir exit. This workflow also helped in benchmarking future horizontal well placement operations in Semoga Field. Abstract There is a growing interest in leveraging functional programming languages in real-time and embedded contexts. Functional languages are appealing as many are strictly typed, amenable to formal methods, have limited mutation, and have simple but powerful concurrency control mechanisms. Although there have been many recent proposals for specialized domain-specific languages for embedded and real-time systems, there has been relatively little progress on adapting more general purpose functional languages for programming embedded and real-time systems. In this paper, we present our current work on leveraging Standard ML (SML) in the embedded and real-time domains. Specifically, we detail our experiences in modifying MLton, a whole-program optimizing compiler for SML, for use in such contexts. We focus primarily on the language runtime, reworking the threading subsystem, object model, and garbage collector. We provide preliminary results over a radar-based aircraft collision detector ported to SML.
