In this paper, the numerical method was developed to flight dynamics characteristics of elastic wing under the action of the discrete gust. In this numerical method, the aerodynamic forces of the elastic wing were calculated by solving the unsteady Navier Stokes equations, and incorporating the grid velocity method to simulating the gust response of the typical NACA0006 airfoil to the step changes in the angle of attack of aircraft . it is shown in results that the calculated lift responses of the airfoil agree well with both the exact theoretical value and calculated value in reference. the elastic effect was considered with RayleighRitz method, so that the fluid dynamic,structural dynamic and flight dynamic problems can be coupled to solve. and AGARD445.6 elastic wing for the numerical simulation of the flight characteristics.

The paper presents a numerical method to simulate two-phase turbulent cavitating flows in ducts of varying cross-section usually faced in engineering. The method is based on solution of two-phase Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations of two-phase mixture. The numerical method uses artificial compressibility algorithm extended to unsteady flows with dual-time technique. The discreted method employs an implicit, characteristic-based upwind differencing scheme in the curvilinear grid systems. Numerical simulation of an unsteady three-dimensional two-phase cavitating flow in a duct of varying cross-section with available experiment was performed. The unsteady important characteristics of the unsteady flow can be observed in results of numerical simulation. Comparison of predicted results with experimental data for time-averaged velocity and phase fraction are provided.

This study describes the aerodynamic efficiency of a forebody–inlet configuration and computational investigation of a drone system, capable of sustainable supersonic cruising at Mach 1.60. Because the whole drone configuration is formed around the induction system and the design is highly interrelated to the flow structure of forebody and inlet efficiency, analysis of this section and understanding its flow pattern is necessary before any progress in design phases. The compression surface is designed analytically using oblique shock patterns, which results in a low drag forebody. To study the concept, two inlet–forebody geometries are considered for Computational Fluid Dynamic simulation using ANSYS Fluent code. The supersonic and subsonic performance, effects of angle of attack, sideslip, and duct geometries on the propulsive efficiency of the concept are studied by solving the three-dimensional Navier–Stokes equations in structured cell domains. Comparing the results with the available data from other sources indicates that the aerodynamic efficiency of the concept is acceptable at supersonic and transonic regimes.

The direct numerical simulation of turbulence (DNS) has become a method of outmost importance for the investigation of turbulence physics, and its relevance is constantly growing due to the increasing popularity of high-performance-computing techniques. In the present work, the DNS approach is discussed mainly with regard to turbulent shear flows of incompressible fluids with constant properties. A body of literature is reviewed, dealing with the numerical integration of the Navier-Stokes equations, results obtained from the simulations, and appropriate use of the numerical databases for a better understanding of turbulence physics. Overall, it appears that high-performance computing is the only way to advance in turbulence research through the front of the direct numerical simulation.

The problem of Vortex-Induced Vibrations (VIV) on spool and jumper geometries is known to present several drawbacks when approached with conventional engineering tools used in the study of VIV on risers. Current recommended practices can lead to over-conservatism that the industry needs to quantify and minimize within notably cost reduction objectives. Within this purpose, the paper will present a brief critical review of the Industry standards and more particularly focus on both experimental and Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) approaches. Both qualitative and quantitative comparisons between basin tests and CFD results for a 2D ‘M-shape’ spool model will be detailed. The results presented here are part of a larger experimental and numerical campaign which considered a number of current velocities, heading and geometry configurations. The vibratory response of the model will be investigated for one of the current velocities and compared with the results obtained through recommended practices (e.g. Shear7 and DNV guidelines). The strategy used by the software K-FSI to solve the fluid-structure interaction (FSI) problem is a partitioned coupling solver between fluid solver (FINE™/Marine) and structural solvers (ARA). FINE™/Marine solves the Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes Equations in a conservative way via the finite volume method and can work on structured or unstructured meshes with arbitrary polyhedrons, while ARA is a nonlinear finite element solver with a large displacement formulation. The experiments were conducted in the BGO FIRST facility located in La Seyne sur Mer, France. Particular attention was paid towards the model design, fabrication, instrumentation and characterization, to ensure an excellent agreement between the structural numerical model and the actual physical model. This included the use of a material with low structural damping, the performance of stiffness and decay tests in air and in still water, plus the rationalization of the instrumentation to be able to capture the response with the minimum flow perturbation or interaction due to instrumentation.

The linear instability of a vortex ring with swirl with Gaussian distributions of azimuthal vorticity and velocity in its core is studied by direct numerical simulation. The numerical study is carried out in two steps: first, an axisymmetric simulation of the Navier–Stokes equations is performed to obtain the quasi-steady state that forms a base flow; then, the equations are linearized around this base flow and integrated for a sufficiently long time to obtain the characteristics of the most unstable mode. It is shown that the vortex rings are subjected to curvature instability as predicted analytically by Blanco-Rodríguez & Le Dizès (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 814, 2017, pp. 397–415). Both the structure and the growth rate of the unstable modes obtained numerically are in good agreement with the analytical results. However, a small overestimation (e.g. 22 % for a curvature instability mode) by the theory of the numerical growth rate is found for some instability modes. This is most likely due to evaluation of the critical layer damping which is performed for the waves on axisymmetric line vortices in the analysis. The actual position of the critical layer is affected by deformation of the core due to the curvature effect; as a result, the damping rate changes since it is sensitive to the position of the critical layer. Competition between the curvature and elliptic instabilities is also investigated. Without swirl, only the elliptic instability is observed in agreement with previous numerical and experimental results. In the presence of swirl, sharp bands of both curvature and elliptic instabilities are obtained for $\unicode[STIX]{x1D700}=a/R=0.1$, where $a$ is the vortex core radius and $R$ the ring radius, while the elliptic instability dominates for $\unicode[STIX]{x1D700}=0.18$. New types of instability mode are also obtained: a special curvature mode composed of three waves is observed and spiral modes that do not seem to be related to any wave resonance. The curvature instability is also confirmed by direct numerical simulation of the full Navier–Stokes equations. Weakly nonlinear saturation and subsequent decay of the curvature instability are also observed.
