Renewable energy resources (RES) are being increasingly connected in distribution systems by utilizing power electronic converters. However, the extensive use of power electronics has resulted in a rise in power quality (PQ) concerns faced by the utility. A novel control strategy implementing reference compensation current was proposed in this paper. So that these grid-connected inverters can achieve maximum benefits when they installed in 3-phase 4-wire distribution systems. The inverter is controlled to perform as a multi-function device by incorporating active power filter functionality. The inverter can thus be utilized as: 1) power converter to transfer active power from RES to the grid, and 2) load reactive power demand support; 3) current harmonics compensation at PCC; and 4) current unbalance and neutral current compensation in case of 3-phase 4-wire system. Moreover, with adequate control of grid-interfacing inverter, all the four objectives can be accomplished either individually or simultaneously. Simulation results show the validity and capability of the novel proposed control strategy.

Due to the excessive use of nonlinear loads and inverter interfaced distributed generators, harmonic issues have been regarded as a major concern in power distribution systems. Therefore, harmonic compensation in microgrids is a subject of current interest. Consequently, a novel direct harmonic voltage-controlled mode (VCM) active power filter (APF) is proposed to mitigate the harmonics in a cooperative manner and provide a better harmonic compensation performance of less than 5%. Due to the dispersive characteristics of renewable energy resources, voltage feedback based on a harmonic compensation control loop is implemented for the first time. This system can be smoothly combined with the current control loop. Our method proposes a better performance while mitigating the harmonics in comparison with conventional resistive active power filters (R-APF). Based on direct voltage detection at the point of common coupling (PCC), the proposed VCM-APF can therefore be seamlessly incorporated with multiple grid-connected generators (DGs) to enhance their harmonic compensation capabilities. The advantage of this scheme is that it avoids the need for designing and tuning the resistance, which was required in earlier conventional control schemes of R-APF for voltage unbalance compensation. Additionally, our scheme does not require the grid and load current measurements since these can be carried out at the PCC voltage, which further reduces the implementation cost of the system. Furthermore, the simulation results show the significance of proposed method.

On the basis of analyzing the synthesis application of p-q (instantaneous reactive power) theory and unit vector template, a multi-functional grid-connected inverter (MFGCI) with auxiliary services on power quality enhancement in micro-grid (MG) is presented. The novel control strategy for achieving maximum benefits from these MFGCI when installed in AC MG access to 3-phase 4-wire distribution systems by isolated transformer at the point of common coupling (PCC). This kind of inverter can not only deliver the power generation of renewable energy sources (RESs), but also can perform as active power filter (APF) at their PCC as well as can improve the efficiency of inverter and decrease the hardware investment. Finally, both feasibility and effectiveness of this new topologies and control strategies of MFGCI are verified by PSCAD/EMTDC.

Taking three-level four-leg active power filter (APF) as research object, this paper establishes the corresponding mathematical model. In addition, the paper establishes the Matlab model based on predictive current control strategy, and then the theoretical analysis and simulation research are conducted. The simulation and experimental results show that the APF with predictive current control strategy can compensate harmonic current and neutral current well and make the two capacitors voltage balance effectively.

Since the development of the first control strategy for the active power filters (APF) introduced by H. Akagi [H. Akagi, Y. Kanazawa,A. Nabae, Generalized theory of the instantaneous reactive power in three-phase circuits, in: Proceedings of International Power Electronics Conference, Tokyo, Japan (1983) 1375–1386.], many efforts have been concentrated to improve their performances. However, when electrical networks supplies high current non-linear loads, a single inverter-based APF has limited power capability. In this paper, we studied parallel operation achieving high power level. More particularly, we examined a modular APF based on two three-phase inverters. This structure allows zero-sequence current circulating through the inverters, as demonstrated by using averaged modelling of the APF. To solve this problem and based on previous averaged model, we proposed a new optimal control strategy, suppressing the zero-sequence circulating current. Simulation results validate the proposed control.

Aiming at the problem of power coupling and complicated decoupling in the d-q coordinate system of a three-phase grid-connected inverter, a current closed-loop control strategy based on an improved QPIR (quasi-proportional integral resonant) controller in the α-β two-phase static coordinate system is proposed. Firstly, the mathematical model of an LCL three-phase grid-connected inverter is established, and its instantaneous power calculation equation is deduced. Secondly, the frequency method is applied to compare and analyze the proportional resonant, quasi-proportional resonant, and improved current controller, and the appropriate improved controller parameters are obtained according to the traditional proportional integral controller parameter design method and the weight coefficient. Finally, the improved controller is compared with the traditional controller in the simulation model of the LCL three-phase grid-connected inverter based on active damping. The results show that the proposed improved current control strategy has good dynamic response characteristics, can realize the non-static error control of grid-connected current, and realizes the decoupling control of active power and reactive power when the load jumps. At the same time, the results also prove the superiority of the proposed control strategy and verify its effectiveness.

In this paper a technical review of various control strategies for operation of SAPF has been presented. Control strategies such as reference current generation by time domain, frequency domain and soft computing approaches; voltage control for dc link voltage regulation and current control for generating switching patterns for voltage source inverter has been discussed. This paper aims to provide a broad understanding on SAPFs for various research and engineering applications.

This Paper presents a control strategy of the grid interconnected inverter Renewable Energy Sources (RES). This system can achieve the maximum benefits from these grid interconnected inverter when installed in 3-phase 4-wire distribution system. Increasing electrification of daily life causes growing electricity consumption and the rising number of sensitive or critical loads demand for high quality electricity. One of the main problems facing today is that related with the transmission and distribution of electricity. Due to the rapid increase in global energy consumption and the diminishing of fossil fuels, the customer demand for new generation capacities and efficient energy production, delivery and utilization keeps rising. Utilizing distributed generation, renewable energy and energy storage can potentially solve problems as energy shortage. With the increase in load demand, the Renewable Energy Sources (RES) are increasingly connected in the distribution systems which utilizes power electronic Converters/Inverters. The inverter can perform as a multi function device by incorporating active power filter functionality. The inverter can thus be utilized as: 1) power converter to inject power generated from RES to the grid, and 2) shunt APF to compensate current unbalance, load current harmonics, load reactive power demand and load neutral current. All of these functions may be accomplished either individually or simultaneously. This new control concept is demonstrated with extensive MATLAB/Simulink simulation studies and validated through digital signal processor-based laboratory experimental results.
