In hot rolling process of 2205 duplex stainless steel, it was found that bright line defects are mainly located at where is about distance of 200 mm from two sides of hot rolled plate. The forming reason of bright line defects is studied by means of metallographic microscope, scanning electron microscope (SEM) combined with energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS). It is concluded that the formation of bright line defects has associated with sticking and that the temperature reduction on the edge of hot rolling plate causes a high percentage of austenite phase which is network structure. In order to prevent or avoid the happening of the sticking phenomenon, it is necessary to uniformly distribute the oxide on the strip surface by controlled rolling process.

A new type of gradient boron alloyed composite material, containing boron alloyed core layers and stainless steel coatings around the core, were designed and prepared by composite casting and hot rolling. The evolution of microstructures, phases and precipitations, as well as their influence on hot rolling process and performance are investigated. A mixture of austenitic matrix and uniformly distributed borides are obtained in the hot rolled stainless steel with 2-2.5 % boron, while massive borides are in the length of 80-120 μm together with micro gaps at the interface between the borides, and the matrix is remained after hot rolling for the core layers with higher boron contents. Hot deformation would be hindered since more precipitations of these orthorhombic or tetragonal phases occur with an increase of the boron concentration in the core layers.

The precipitate phases often play an important influence on the corrosion resistance of 2205 Duplex stainless steel (DSS). In the presented paper, the microstructure and corrosion resistance in the hot-rolled and cold-rolled 2205 DSS aging for different time at 850 °C was investigated by XRD, SEM and potentiodynamic polarization. It has been found that the Chi(χ) phase and Sigm(σ) phase were precipitated in turn after aging treatment of hot-rolled and cold-rolled materials, but the precipitate amount in cold-rolled material is much more than that of hot-rolled samples. The corrosion resistance of the solution-annealed cold-rolled material is similar to the hot-rolled material, but the corrosion resistance of cold-rolled material with precipitate is weaker than that of hot-rolled material after aging treatment. Pitting initiates preferentially in the Cr-depleted region from σ phase in aged hot-rolled 2205, and severe selective corrosion occurs on sigma/ferrite interfaces aged for a long aged lime. However, the initiation of pitting corrosion may take place at the phase boundary, defect and martensite in the aged cold-rolled 2205. The σ phase is further selectively dissolved by electrochemical method to investigate the difference of microstructure and corrosion behavior in hot-rolled and cold-rolled 2205 duplex stainless steel.

Pickling behaviour of the oxide layer on hot-rolled 2205 duplex stainless steel (DSS) was studied in H2SO4 solutions with electrolytic workstation. The pickling rate at 75°C increases slightly with the H2SO4 concentration from 100 to 250 g L−1 but increases markedly as the concentration is higher than 250 g L−1. The solution temperature greatly accelerates the pickling rate. Fe3+ ion is an effective oxidant, which shows stronger inhibitive effect. The rotating disk electrode was used to simulate the moving state of steel strips in practice. The movement with the speed from 0 to 20 m min−1 results in weak acceleration effect on the pickling process. Under dynamic conditions, the pickling rate increases noticeably with changing the pulse current density from 0 to 0.2 A cm−2. The industrial pickling efficiency of 2205 DSS hot-rolled strips increases from 5–8 m/min to 15–18 m/min. The surface quality is improved.
