Considered electrorheological (ER) elastomers as the visco-elasticity material, a finite element model of a sandwich beam filled with ER elastomers was developed based on Hamilton’s principle and sandwich beam’s theory. Then its dynamic characteristics were analyzed. Simulation results show that natural frequencies of the sandwich beam increase and vibration amplitudes of the beam decrease as the intensity of applied electric field increases. Increased the thickness of the ER elastomers layer, natural frequencies of the beam decrease and loss factors increase. Those indicate that the dynamic characteristic of ER elastomers sandwich beams is similar as that of ER fluids beam, which can be used for vibration control of flexible structures by applied a electric field.

The aim of this study is to report the effect of delamination on the vibration characteristics of composite sandwich beams. The natural frequencies and corresponding vibration modes of a free-free sandwich beam with delamination of various sizes and locations are predicted using a two-dimensional finite element analysis (FEA). The presence of delamination affects the stiffness of the delaminated beam and results in differences on the natural frequencies of the beam. Assessment of the differences light the way for the existence, size and location of the delaminated region and can be used for a non-destructive evaluation of the damage characteristics of the delaminated beams. Vibration tests are conducted on fully bonded sandwich beams with carbon/epoxy laminated composite faces and foam core to verify the finite element results. Agreement between predictions of the model and experimental observations is good.

A novel crack arresting device is implemented in foam-cored composite sandwich beams and tested using the Sandwich Tear Test (STT) configuration. A finite element model of the setup is developed, and the predictions are correlated with observations and results from a recently conducted experimental fatigue test study. Based on a linear elastic fracture mechanics approach, the developed FE model is utilised to simulate crack propagation and arrest in foam-cored sandwich beam specimens subjected to fatigue loading conditions. The effect of the crack arresters on the fatigue life is analysed, and the predictive results are subsequently compared with the observations from the previously conducted fatigue tests. The FE model predicts the energy release rate and the mode mixity based on the derived crack surface displacements, utilising algorithms for the prediction of accelerated fatigue crack growth as well as the strain field evolution in the vicinity of the crack tip on the surface of the sandwich specimens. It is further shown that the developed finite element analysis methodology can be used to gain a deeper insight onto the physics and behavioural characteristics of the novel peel stopper concept, as well as a design tool that can be used for the implementation of crack arresting devises in engineering applications of sandwich components and structures.

In this paper, the vibration analysis of uniform laminated composite sandwich beam with a viscoelastic core was studied. The governing equation of motion of the laminated composite sandwich beam has been derived based on higher order shear deformation theory (HSDT) in finite element model (FEM). The developed finite element model has been validated in terms of natural frequencies with the experimental values and the available literature. Various parametric studies have been performed to examine the impact of the core thickness, ply orientation and aspect ratio of the uniform laminated composite sandwich beam in response to free vibration for various boundary conditions. From the results it was concluded that that natural frequencies could be increased with increasing the core thickness and decreased with increasing the aspect ratio.

The research of impeller dynamic characteristics by modal analysis technology is a kind of practical and effective fault diagnosis method, which has the vital significance to realize the security of machinery. Crack and blade fracture often occur in centrifugal compressor impeller. In order to study the impeller dynamic characteristic with crack and the blade fracture, a three-dimension finite element model (FEM) was built using ANSYS program, and an experimental modal analysis was also carried out. The compared results show that the preceding four orders natural frequencies and vibration models are basically consistent, and those also verified the reliability of the simulation results. In addition, two kinds of failure mode were also simulated, such as crack and blade fracture. It concluded that all orders natural frequencies decrease clearly, compared with the normal impeller. How the severity of crack and blade fracture affects the natural frequency was also discussed.

In this paper, the bending behavior of functionally graded single-layered, symmetric and non-symmetric sandwich beams is investigated according to a new higher order shear deformation theory. Based on this theory, a novel parabolic shear deformation function is developed and applied to investigate the bending response of sandwich beams with homogeneous hardcore and softcore. The present theory provides an accurate parabolic distribution of transverse shear stress across the thickness and satisfies the zero traction boundary conditions on the top and bottom surfaces of the functionally graded sandwich beam without using any shear correction factors. The governing equations derived herein are solved by employing the finite element method using a two-node beam element, developed for this purpose. The material properties of functionally graded sandwich beams are graded through the thickness according to the power-law distribution. The predictive capability of the proposed finite element model is demonstrated through illustrative examples. Four types of beam support, i.e. simply-simply, clamped-free, clamped–clamped, and clamped-simply, are used to study how the beam deflection and both axial and transverse shear stresses are affected by the variation of volume fraction index and beam length-to-height ratio. Results of the numerical analysis have been reported and compared with those available in the open literature to evaluate the accuracy and robustness of the proposed finite element model. The comparisons with other higher order shear deformation theories verify that the proposed beam element is accurate, presents fast rate of convergence to the reference results and it is also valid for both thin and thick functionally graded sandwich beams. Further, some new results are reported in the current study, which will serve as a benchmark for future research.

A finite element model is proposed to investigate the effect of thickness differential on Limiting Dome Height (LDH) testing of aluminum tailor-welded blanks. The numerical model is validated via comparison of the equivalent plastic strain and displacement distribution between the simulation results and the experimental data. The normalized equivalent plastic strain and normalized LDH values are proposed as a means of quantifying the influence of thickness differential for a variety of different ratios. Increasing thickness differential was found to decrease the normalized equivalent plastic strain and normalized LDH values, this providing an evaluation of blank formability.

The dynamic analysis has been successfully used to predict the pavement response based on the finite element modeling, during which the stiffness and mass matrices have been established well, whereas the method to determine the damping matrix based on Rayleigh damping is still under development. This article presents a novel method to determine the two parameters of the Rayleigh damping for dynamic modeling in pavement engineering. Based on the idealized shear beam model, a more reasonable method to calculate natural frequencies of different layers is proposed, by which the global damping matrix of the road pavement can be assembled. The least squares method is simplified and used to calculate the frequency-independent damping. The best-fit Rayleigh damping is obtained by only determining the natural frequencies of the two modal. Finite element model and in-situ field test subjected by the same falling weight deflectometer pulse loads are performed to validate the accuracy of this method. Good agreements are noted between simulation and field in-situ results demonstrating that this method can provide a more accurate approach for future finite element modeling and back-calculation.

The dynamic characteristics of machine tool may directly affect its machining capability, which is analyzed to improve the machining precision and efficiency. In this paper, the 3D finite element model of main components turn-milling center is established by using ANSYS software, and then spindle box of turn-milling center is analyzed and optimized; the natural frequencies and vibration models are obtained after analysis, which guarantee the design requirement of the machining center. Therefore it is significant to improve the design quality of machining center by using FEA software in the design process.

Prestressed concrete bridges with corrugated steel webs have emerged as a new form of steel-concrete composite bridges with remarkable advantages compared with the traditional ones. However, the assumption that plane sections remain plane may no longer be valid for such bridges due to the different behavior of the constituents. The sandwich beam theory is extended to predict the flexural vibration behavior of this type of bridges considering the presence of diaphragms, external prestressing tendons and interaction between the web shear deformation and flange local bending. To this end, a [Formula: see text] beam finite element is formulated. The proposed theory and finite element model are verified both numerically and experimentally. A comparison between the analyses based on the sandwich beam model and on the classical Euler–Bernoulli and Timoshenko models reveals the following findings. First of all, the extended sandwich beam model is applicable to the flexural vibration analysis of the bridges considered. By letting [Formula: see text] denote the square root of the ratio of equivalent shear rigidity to the flange local flexural rigidity, and L the span length, the combined parameter [Formula: see text] appears to be more suitable for considering the diaphragm effect and the interaction between the shear deformation and flange local bending. The diaphragms have significant effect on the flexural natural frequencies and mode shapes only when the [Formula: see text] value of the bridge falls below a certain limit. For a bridge with an [Formula: see text] value over a certain limit, the flexural natural frequencies and mode shapes obtained from the sandwich beam model and the classical Euler–Bernoulli and Timoshenko models tend to be the same. In such cases, either of the classical beam theories may be used.
