Creative design plays a quite important role in mechanical product processing, which affects the mechanical development of all over the country. Much research on the mechanical design is carried on. The paper is mainly based on Yan’s Creative Mechanism Design Methodology, in which the author carries out some research in Type Synthesis based on the Number Synthesis Method. And kinematic chains of eight links and ten joints can be gained from embryo graphs. In the article, the author proposes a systematic method for the creation of a sofa bed. In the process, some rules are brought in, and the original structure is changed for other structures with the same functions but different shapes. At last, many probable schemes different from the original mechanism are obtained. The next step is to choose the most proper scheme in order to carry on the further analysis.

One of the major steps in the development of a systematic design methodology for the creative design of vehicle mechanisms is to obtain all possible link assortments, and then to generate the catalogs of kinematic chains. If the generalized mathematical expressions for the maximum value M of the maximum number of joints incident to a link of kinematic chains with N links and J joints can be derived, the process of solving link assortments can be more systematic. Using elementary concepts of graph theory, we derived explicit relationships for M for two regions of the J-N plane.

Abstract. A plane kinematic chain inversion refers to a plane kinematic chain with one link fixed (assigned as the ground link). In the creative design of mechanisms, it is important to select proper ground links. The structural synthesis of plane kinematic chain inversions is helpful for improving the efficiency of mechanism design. However, the existing structural synthesis methods involve isomorphism detection, which is cumbersome. This paper proposes a simple and efficient structural synthesis method for plane kinematic chain inversions without detecting isomorphism. The fifth power of the adjacency matrix is applied to recognize similar vertices, and non-isomorphic kinematic chain inversions are directly derived according to non-similar vertices. This method is used to automatically synthesize 6-link 1-degree-of-freedom (DOF), 8-link 1-DOF, 8-link 3-DOF, 9-link 2-DOF, 9-link 4-DOF, 10-link 1-DOF, 10-link 3-DOF and 10-link 5-DOF plane kinematic chain inversions. All the synthesis results are consistent with those reported in literature. Our method is also suitable for other kinds of kinematic chains.

Parallel mechanisms (PMs) with two rotational degrees-of-freedom (DOF) and one translational DOF (2R1T) have gained much attention in recent years. In this paper, different from type synthesis method, inner properties of PMs (motion characteristics, type of joints and arrangement way of joints) are used to deduce PMs; and two novel 3-DOF PMs are presented using this method. Aiming at 2UPU/SP PM, the constraint force/torque generated on the moving platform (MP) are analysed; here, P, U and S denote prismatic, universal and spherical joints, respectively. The driving force and the constraint force/torque are drawn, which show good distribution of the constraint wrench. After that, a novel 5-DOF hybrid manipulator is constructed on the basis of the 2UPU/SP PM; according to different demands, two alternative designs of the 5-DOF hybrid manipulator are presented. The study in this paper will enhance the research applications of the 2UPU/SP PM.

Creation of novel kinematic structures of mechanisms has been a challenging issue which is usually conducted on experience and intuition. This paper, however, proposes a systematic method for the creative design of mechanism-based products and equipments on the basis of corresponding atlas database, and the creative design of an 11-link 2-DOF rode tractor is provided as an example. First, the transformation of the kinematic structure of mechanisms into graph representation is addressed. Then, the complete atlas database of 11-link 2-DOF kinematic chains is established by obtaining all the non-fractionated topological graphs through their contracted graphs and all the fractionated topological graphs through the combination of 1-DOF kinematic chains. Finally, based on the established atlas database, the creation design for the novel mechanisms of 11-link 2-DOF rode tractors is implemented, and all the nine novel feasible mechanisms (including the widely used one reported in literature) which satisfy the proposed performance indices are obtained.

The structural synthesis is the primary and the most important issue in the process of mechanism creative design. In the paper, Firstly, select a 1T symmetric parallel mechanism, and the constraint and mobility of the branches can be analyzed. With the method of linear combination of the screws, the new branches are constructed. Then, using the measure of separation and merger, parts of the limbs of the parallel mechanism can be replaced by equivalent coupled structures, so corresponding symmetric coupling mechanisms with equal mobility are synthesized. Finally, solving the constraint screws of the branch of the coupling mechanism, in order to prove the hybrid mechanism is full-cycle or not.

AbstractThe concept of art has varied according to space and time perspective in each and every period and it has emerged in different forms in every culture. Artists or designers produce a wide range of forms with different materials representing the period and culture while creating their ceramics. Ceramics symbolizes a thousand-year-old endeavor as well as being considered as one of the arts. It has shed light on the history in different shapes and cultures in addition to undertaking the task of conveyance of art with original structure and formal style in the works of art. Ceramics makes identity differences thanks to background knowledge, form and decorative techniques and originality. Art is not for society’s sake; it aims to relieve the tension, to satisfy pleasure, to enable people to see and hear, to use and to evaluate. Different cultures have generated new styles in their ceramics by integrating creativity into their own traditions and techniques as well as interacting with Mayan vases and pots, Greek pottery, Anatolian ceramics and tiles. Some of these impacts have been so profound in ceramics that they have been passed on from generation to generation. This paper seeks to address to the following questions: How was ceramics used in different cultures and periods with composition features such as form, decoration, motif and figure; and how has it undertaken the task of conveyance of art by investigating what features they have. Keywords: ceramics, art, conveyance of art, form, figure.

SUMMARYDeveloping 6-DOF isotropic manipulators using isotropic generators is simple and efficient, and isotropic generators can be employed to develop serial, redundant, or parallel isotropic manipulators. An isotropic generator consists of a reference point and six straight lines. The existing generators, however, have one common geometric constraint: the reference point is equidistant from the six straight lines. Some practical isotropic designs might not be obtained due to this constraint. This paper proposes methods for developing new isotropic generators. The generators thus developed are not subject to the constraint, and the new methods allow us to specify the location of the tool center point, the size of the platform or the base, or the shape of isotropic parallel manipulators. Many new generators are presented to develop 6-DOF parallel manipulators with different shapes or different types of kinematic chains.

Epicyclic gear trains have been broadly applied in engineering practice. In this paper, kinematic chains (K.C.) with single-joint (S.J.) were applied to innovative synthesis of the epicyclic gear trains. The method of the innovative synthesis of the epicyclic gear trains was presented. Not only the epicyclic gear trains in common uses were obtained, but some new types of epicyclic gear trains that are got difficultly by means of conventional combination method were gained. Thereby, a new way has been offered for the innovative synthesis of the epicyclic gear trains, at the same time, a way has also been offered for practical application of some multi-link kinematic chains gained by using the theory of type-number synthesis of the K.C. with S.J.. Examples show that the method presented in this paper is right and feasible, and the method is efficient and practical for the innovative synthesis of the epicyclic gear trains.

Abstract Knowledge-based CAD systems limit designers’ creativity by constraining them to work with the prototypes provided by the systems’ knowledge bases. We investigate knowledge-based CAD systems capable of supporting creative designs in the example domain of elementary mechanisms. We present a technique based on qualitative explanations which allows a designer to extend the knowledge base by demonstrating a structure which implements a function in a creative way. Structure is defined as the geometry of the parts, and function using a general logical language based on qualitative physics. We argue that the technique can accommodate any creative design in the example domain, and we demonstrate the technique using an example of a creative design. The use of qualitative physics as a tool for extensible knowledge-based systems points out a new and promising application area for qualitative physics.
