Injection molding is one of the most important processes in manufacturing nowadays. Thus, attention must be give towards the optimization of the product defects. Parameters have been chosen by screening tests to improve the process quality. The main purpose of this study is to optimize the processing condition using Taguchi Method on shrinkage for HDPE-Clay specimen. The experiment starts by preparing the mixture between HDPE and clay. Then, screening test is conducted to obtain the parameters. The parameters are melt temperature, injection speed, injection pressure and cooling time. By using the array orthogonal L9 (34), signal to noise ratio and ANOVA were conducted. Based on the S / N ratio analysis, best combination can be produced for warpage (melt temperature: 190°C, injection speed: 40%, injection pressure: 30% and cooling time: 3 seconds). While for ANOVA, melt temperature is most significant with 60.28% for warpage.

Abstract Plastic injection forming (PIF) is an alternative sheet metal forming method for complex geometrical parts with dimensions in low tolerance. This method is a combination of injection molding and hydroforming in which a molten polymer material has been injected over a sheet metal via a plastic injection molding machine. In this study, aluminum sheets 1.5 mm thick were shaped by PIF at various injection pressures, melt temperatures and injection speed. The effects of these parameters on the formability of the sheet metal were investigated using the experimental design technique. The thinning rate, flange radius and the hardness values of the shaped sheets were considered in the experimental study. Injection pressure was found to be the most effective parameter and melt temperature was the second degree effective parameter for the thinning rate. The usability of the PIF process in industrial applications as an alternative method was emphasized by comparing PIF with conventional hydroforming by means of the finite element method (Ls-Dyna). A 2.07 % deviation was observed between the FE results for hydroforming and the experimental results for PIF.

This study presents an optimization of injection moulding parameters on mechanical properties of plastic part using Taguchi method and Grey Relational Analysis (GRA) approach. The orthogonal array with L9 was used as the experimental design. Grey relational analysis for ultimate tensile strength, modulus and percentage of elongation from the Taguchi method can convert optimization of the multiple performance characteristics into optimization of a single performance characteristic called the grey relational grade (GRG). It is found that mould temperature of 62oC, melt temperature of 280oC, injection time of 0.70s and cooling time 15.4s are found as the optimum process setting. Furthermore, ANOVA result shows that the cooling time is the most influenced factor that affects the mechanical properties of plastic part followed by mould temperature and melt temperature.

In this study, volumetric shrinkage at ejection of the chair base in the injection process, application of the 3D CAD software pro/e to design the shape of the product, and then combines moldflow simulation analysis and Taguchi method with L25 Orthogonal Array to determine the optimal injection molding parameters combination. In the Taguchi L25 experimental design, the six controlling factors used are melt temperature, mold temperature, injection time, packing time, packing pressure and cooling time, the result of experiment revealed that the optimum combination of parameters was the A2 (melting temperature 265°C), B3 (mold temperature 40°C), C2 (injection time 1.7sec), D4 (packing pressure 95%), E5 (packing time20sec), F5 (cooling time 20sec). The results show that the combination of Taguchi method and Moldflow can not only improve the molding process parameters effectively, but also optimize the quality of the products.

In the present work, Taguchi method was used for the optimization of geometric parameters for double pin joint configurations. The orthogonal array, the signal-to-noise ratio, and analysis of variance were employed to study the effect of geometric parameters on the bearing strength of the joints. Geometric parameters, i.e. the distance from the free edge of the specimen to the diameter of the first hole (E/D) ratio, width of the specimen to the diameter of the hole (W/D) ratio, the distance between the two holes to the diameter of the hole (P/D) ratio and side width to the diameter of the hole (K/D) ratio were investigated for the serial and parallel hole configurations. The results demonstrate that the E/D ratio is the most significant parameter to increase the bearing strength in both serial and parallel pin joint configurations. Its percentage contribution is about 84.5% and 64.23% in serial and parallel pin joint configurations, respectively. Characteristic curve with Tsai–Wu failure criterion was used for the prediction of the bearing strength in the joints numerically. A good agreement was obtained between experimental results and numerical predictions.
