In this paper using Fuzzy-QFD approach to product development: case studyfor 3D printer. The method that translating the customer needs into technical term, Fuzzy-QFDmentioned illustrate that it can be utilized in different ways and can be adapted to solve a greatnumber of design problems. The study starts by determining customer demand. Thereafter, identifying technical requirement based on QFD. This paper integrates fuzzy set theory and house of qualityto determine the importance weight of the customer requirement and the relationship between customer requirement and the technical requirement. The results proposed Fuzzy-QFD approach can be expected to be successful and has potential for multiple criteria decision-making problems.

AbstractThere is already a wide acceptance on the importance of involving supplier and customer companies in product development. Decent understanding prevails on the relationship-oriented approach to product development including various collaboration forms. However, there is less research on the factors explaining the decision of attending to joint product development. In addition, less studies have examined the integrated role of both suppliers and customers in product development initiatives. This study searches answers to the following research questions: 1. What is the role of different actors in product development initiatives? 2. What factors motivate suppliers and customers to participate in product development? The research is carried out as an in-depth qualitative single case study in a large project manufacturing company. It takes the perspective of a focal company striving for product improvements. The first part of the empirical study consists of 15 semi-structured interviews. The second part includes two discursive workshops and builds upon the results of the interviews. This study contributes to the existing research by explaining the challenges and conditions facilitating joint product development with supplier and purchaser companies. The results highlight the role of customers in improving the effectiveness of product development. As a practical contribution, the paper reports the application of workshop method as a facilitator of collaboration between supplier, purchaser (focal company) and customer companies.

Currently, any industries face higher competition in their business pertinent to the customers' demands and product design requirements. Customer requirements and satisfaction measurement can be achieved through various methods. This paper presents an integrative framework of Kansei engineering (KE) and Kano model, applied to a product (light bulb changer LBC). KE captures and translates the emotional needs of the customer (Kansei), whereas Kano model is inserted into it to investigate the relationship between service quality attribute performance and Kansei. On this research, the integration between KE and KM in product development approach is applied though a daily life product as a case study (LBC product). The results show that the mechanical mechanism consisting of spring fingers with pvc, round grip and plastic telescopic pole is preferred by customers. This study found that the perceived or quality attributes are influenced by the emotional design or Kansei response. It provides the useful spectrum to other researchers to gain more powerful product development in the future, and stay on the customer satisfaction and requirement track.

The diversity of costumer’s needs requires manufacturers to provide a complex package of product and service. In contrast to traditional matured methods used for product design, Product/Service Systems (PSS) design still has a large room for development because of three following core research challenges: 1) development of a common shared structure to represent and understand PSS’s elements and their relations; 2) systematic modelling approaches to formulating design problems; and 3) holistic consideration of social, technological, economic and ecological elements. This paper aims to propose a novel framework for PSS design by addressing three issues above. The proposed framework is derived step-by-step from a natural language description of PSS environment using Environment-Based Design (EBD) methodology. The proposed framework attempts to accommodate the recursive scenarios in PSS design along with PSS lifecycle. The PSS environment will be firstly analyzed through a question-asking strategy. Besides, a set of graphical tools will be presented to support the development of framework, such as product-environment system, performance network, and conflict map. A case study, concerning the service design of intellectual property protection in collaborative product development, will be presented to illustrate the proposed framework.

This paper presents two primary results relevant to physical design problems in CAD/VLSI through a case study of the linear placement problem. First a local search mechanism which incorporates a sophisticated neighborhood operator based on constraint relaxation is proposed. The strategy exhibits many of the desirable features of analytical placement while retaining the flexibility and non-determinism of local search. The second and orthogonal contribution is in netlist clustering. We characterize local optima in the linear placement problem through a simple visualization tool—the displacement graph. This characterization reveals the relationship between clusters and local optima and motivates a dynamic clustering scheme designed specifically for escaping such local optima. Promising experimental results are reported.

A customer requirements driving NPD method is addressed. This study proposes a new method to elicit customers’ requirement, through which NPD team acquire product attributes and quality functional deployment. Customer requirements driving New Product Development Method addressed in this paper is based on integrated application of customer requirements elicitation, CAD, CAM, CAE technology. It makes STP strategy of NPD become more quickly and more effectively compared with the traditional method. This study finds that precise customer requirement elicitation contribute to NPD’ success, a better NPD performance can be achieved by customer requirements driving NPD method (CRDNPD). A case study of All Terrain Vehicle NDP is used to illustrate the new method. We believe that the proposed methodology will have a positive impact on the future new product development.

The article explores the political effects of popular consultations as a means of direct democracy in struggles over mining. Building on concepts from participatory and materialist democracy theory, it shows the transformative potentials of processes of direct democracy towards democratization and emancipation under, and beyond, capitalist and liberal democratic conditions. Empirically the analysis is based on a case study on the protests against the La Colosa gold mining project in Colombia. The analysis reveals that although processes of direct democracy in conflicts over mining cannot transform existing class inequalities and social power relations fundamentally, they can nevertheless alter elements thereof. These are for example the relationship between local and national governments, changes of the political agenda of mining and the opening of new spaces for political participation, where previously there were none. It is here where it’s emancipatory potential can be found.
