In the case of small increase of cross-section, concrete column strengthened by circular steel tube can increase the bearing capacity greatly as well as ductility. This has resulted in engineering welcome. This paper studied the common work performance of reinforced concrete column strengthened by circular steel tube in three different conditions test of axial compression. The results show that outsourcing steel and core column can be achieved interaction. By strengthening, it can improve the load capacity of the concrete column as well as ductility. With the increase in initial load, although it has little effect on the bearing capacity of reinforced columns, it can affect the ductility to some extent. This paper can provide experimental basis for engineering applications.

In this paper, a comparative investigation into the behavior of concrete-filled steel tube column and reinforced concrete column with the same quantity of material and cross-section sizes under axial load have been undertaken using the finite element method. Both is analyzed to compare the axial compression performance, including bearing capacity, ductility and their mechanism. The results of the analyses clearly exhibit that bearing capacity of concrete-filled steel tube column is higher about 25% than that of reinforced concrete column. Under the same conditions, ductility of concrete-filled steel tube column is better than reinforced concrete column, its application is recommended in construction practice.

Based on experimental research on plain concrete columns with high strength concrete core, the formula to predict the bearing capacity of concrete columns with high strength concrete core under axial compression loading was brought forward in previous paper, in order to verify the formula whether right, axial compression test including 3 concrete columns with high strength concrete core and 1 ordinary reinforced concrete column were completed, and the failure characteristic was analyzed additionally. According to experimental results, it can be shown that the failure modes of concrete columns with high strength concrete core are similar to that of ordinary reinforced concrete columns, however, the bearing capacity of concrete columns with high strength concrete core is significant higher compared with that of ordinary reinforced concrete column; the results of the bearing capacity obtained by the formula (2) was in good agreement with the experimental results.

A new column of FRP composite tube confined steel-reinforced concrete (FTCSRC) column was proposed. This paper elaborates on laboratorial and analytical studies on the behavior of FCTSRC columns subjected to axial compressive load. Eight circular FTCSRC stub columns and one circular steel tube confined concrete (STCC) stub column were tested to investigate the failure mode and axial compression performance of circular FTCRSC columns. Parametric analysis was implemented to inquire the influence of confinement material (CFRP-steel tube or CFRP-GFRP tube), internal steel and CFRP layers on the ultimate load capacity. CFRP-steel composite tube was composed of steel tube and CFRP layer which was wrapped outside the steel tube, while CFRP-GFRP composite tube was composite of GFRP tube and CFRP layer. The test results indicate that the confinement effect of CFRP-steel tube is greatly superior to CFRP-GFRP tube. The ductility performance of steel tube confined high-strength concrete column can be improved obviously by encasing steel in the core concrete. Furthermore, with the increase in the layers of FRP wraps, the axial load capacity increases greatly.

Through the axial compression experiment of 9 GFRP tubes reinforced concrete columns, this paper analyzes the failure mode and loading-strain curves under different pipe diameter, and compares bearing capacity between the experimental data with FRP reinforced concrete and the calculated value without GFRP tubes reinforced concrete. he results show that the bearing capacity and ductility of GFRP tubes reinforced concrete column have improved, because of the restriction effect of FRP tubes. The confining ability of FRP tubes on concrete reduced for a certain thickness GFRP tubes constraint concrete short column, while the pipe diameter is increasing.

In the present study, an experimental research was conducted on square steel tube confined steel reinforced concrete column under eccentric load. The major parameters of the specimens included slenderness ratio, eccentricity ratio, and structural steel reinforced ratio. According to the tested results, the eccentricity ratio, from 0 to 0.55, significantly affects the structural bearing capacity. The slenderness ratio, from 3 to 8, and steel reinforced ratio, from 0.3 to 0.41, slightly affect the capacity. Furthermore, a numerical analysis program was developed, and the calculated results are well consistent with the experimental results. Also, the theoretical formula for eccentrically loaded columns was proposed based on numerical results.

Eccentric loading experiment of 13 steel tube-reinforced concrete columns and a reinforced concrete column is implemented. The whole process from the start load on the steel tube-reinforced concrete column until damage has been researched. Change of ultimate bearing capacity with eccentricity, longitudinal reinforcement ratio, position coefficient has been studied, and deflection curve and load-vertical displacement curve under eccentric compressive load were obtained. Failure characteristics of steel tube-reinforced concrete were divided into two different type, small eccentric damage and big eccentric damage. With the same conditions, when steel tube ratio of steel tube-reinforced concrete was 2%, its ultimate bearing capacity was nearly double of reinforced concrete columns.

In this paper, in order to investigate the shear mechanism and shear capacity of framework joints of steel-reinforced concrete-filled circular steel tube (SRCFCST), a numerical finite element model reflecting the mechanical behavior of framework joints of SRCFCST column-reinforced concrete beam is established through simulating concrete by the damage plastic constitutive model and simulating steel by the ideal elastic-plastic material, and its effectiveness is verified by experimental data. On account of uniform distribution of circular steel reinforced around the section and without definite flange and web, the shear mechanism of the framework joints of SRCFCST is analyzed on the basis of equivalent circular steel tube (CST) to the rectangular steel tube. The method for calculating the superposed shear bearing capacities of the joint core area is proposed, which is composed of four parts, i.e., concrete inside tube, concrete outside tube, hooping and steel-reinforced web; and the corresponding formulas for calculating shear bearing capacity are established. The comparative analysis of joints’ shear bearing capacity indicates that the results of numerical simulation and shear bearing capacity formulas coincide well with the experimental values, which can provide reference for the nonlinear analysis and engineering design of similar joints.

The mechanical behavior and ultimate bearing capacity of the circular bar-reinforced concrete filled steel tube (BRCFST) short columns under axial compression are analyzed in this paper based on the unified strength theory. Considering the restriction effect of steel tube and hoop bar on concrete, the calculation formula of bearing capacity of the column is deduced. Parametric studies are carried out to evaluate the effects of intermediate principal stresses, diameter-thickness ratio of steel tube and the stirrup ratio on the bearing capacity of the column. A good agreement is reached by comparing the results calculated by the formula with the test results. It is concluded that the unified strength theory is applicable in the theoretical analyses of the BRCFST columns.

With the development of modern constructional technique, more attention on the size effect is paid by academics and engineers. The normal section bearing capacity of Reinforced Concrete Column is analyzed by eccentrically compressed theory firstly. The size effect on normal section bearing capacity of reinforced concrete column is obtained by theoretical analysis and experimental summary. The size effect formula of concrete compressive strength is proposed. Finally, a research thinking of size effect on bearing capacity is suggested.
