Phlogopite with layered silicate structure had been firstly chemically modified via an in situ intercalation method, and phlogopite-polymer nanocomposite films were prepared from 2,2'-bis (3,4-dicarboxyphenyl) hexafluropropane dianhydride (6FDA) and oxydimethyl aniline (ODA) in N,N-dimethylacetamide as a solvent by using in-situ polymerization process combined with ultrasonic dispersion and multi-step curing. The structure of phlogopite minerals and its polymer nanocomposites were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and infrared spectra (FTIR) respectively. The experimental results indicated that the phlogopites with layered nanostructure had lost their ordered structure and had been exfoliated or intercalated. Thereafter, they were dispersed randomly in the polyimide matrix. The dependence of dielectric properties and thermal stabilities of the nanocomposite films on the phlogopite content and frequency were studied.

PANI coated Cu-ZnS porous microsphere structures have been synthesized by hydrothermal method and in-situ polymerization process. The synthesized composite is characterized by different techniques in order to study the structural, morphological and surface absorption properties. The experimental observation demonstrates that the PANI/1%Cu-ZnS composite has better sensitivity, fast response and good stability as compared to pure PANI and other PANI/CuZnS compositions. Finally, PANI/1% Cu-ZnS composite has been found to be optimized for the humidity sensors due to its well-distributed roughness, porosity and hydrophilicity. The average response and recovery times of the PANI/1% Cu-ZnS are found to be 42 s and 24 s, respectively, which outperform recent results.

A graphene oxide/polyaniline composite was synthesized by an in situ polymerization process. This product was simply prepared in an ethylene glycol medium, using ammonium persulfate as oxidant in ice bath. The composite was characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-Ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy and electrochemical test. The composite material showed a good electrochemical performance.

Poly(fluorene-alt-benzothiadiazole) (PFBT) is a promising chiral polymer for use in metamaterials and other photonic applications, due to its large chiral optical activity at visible wavelengths. However, its usages are very limited, since it is not readily patternable into microstructures and challenging to apply to applications. In this paper, we demonstrate photo patterning of chiral PFBT/Achiral SU-8 photoresist to produce high quality structures while retaining the extraordinary chiral optical activity of our previously-reported PFBT/SU8 nanocomposite films. The ability to produce cleanly patterned microfeatures with high chirality may enable wider use of PFBT in chiral metamaterials and other photonic applications.

ABSTRACTOrganic/inorganic (O/I) composite latexes combine the best attributes of inorganic solids with the processability, lightweight and handling advantages of organic polymers. There are common methods to produce polymer nanocomposites: melt compounding, in-situ polymerization and solution mixing. Emulsion polymerization is an unique chemical process widely used to produce waterborne resins with various colloidal and physicochemical properties. This free radical polymerization process involves emulsification of the relatively hydrophobic monomer in water by an oil-in-water emulsifier, followed by the initiation reaction with a water insoluble initiator. This research focuses on the synthesis and reactions kinetics of polyacrylic latex with the incorporation of various nanospheres (SiO2, TiO2, Al2O3 and Fe2O3), and layered silicate (Bentonite nanoclay) nanoparticles via emulsion polymerization. The influence of nanoparticle concentration on reaction kinetics was also investigated. The results showed that the concentration of nanoparticles has significant influence on the monomer conversion, particle size, coagulum content and viscosity of the emulsion. Furthermore, the nanostructured emulsions were shear thinning, exhibiting a power-law behavior, and the viscosity was influenced by the nanoparticle morphology.

Multi–walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs)/polyethylene (PE) nanocomposites were prepared via in situ polymerization with MWNTs supported Cp2ZrCl2 catalyst. XPS and FESEM results imply that Cp2ZrCl2 catalyst has been immobilized in the surface of the MWNTs supports by a MAO bridge. The efficient dispersion of MWNTs in PE matrix and the strong compressive forces associated with PE on the MWNTs were demonstrated by TEM, FESEM and Raman spectra. With introducing 0.2 wt.-% MWNTs, both the tensile strength and elongation of MWNTs/PE nanocomposite increased by factors of 1.6 (from 29 MPa to 45 MPa) and 1.5 (from 909% to 1360%) comparing with the pure PE, respectively. Morphology observation of fractured surface, in accordance with the Raman results, revealed that the PE firmly adheres to the nanotubes, which is responsible for the significant improvement of the mechanical properties of nanocomposites. Thermal stabilities of the nanocomposites were significantly improved. In addition, the MWNTs/PE nanocomposites show very high UV shielding properties, which could increase photooxidative stability of the PE.

A functional potassium sodium niobate/polyimide (KNN/PI) composite films were prepared in this paper. KNN fillers are well dispersed in the PI matrix without any accumulation through in situ polymerization process. The optical band baps of the hybrid films become smaller with the increase of KNN loading. The optical band baps of the films with 0-20 wt% KNN filler are estimated to be 2.61 eV, 2.57 eV, 2.52 eV, 4.29 eV, 2.35 eV respectively.
