Three fluorinated polyimide (PI-FP, PI-FO and PI-FH) films with low dielectric constants and excellent comprehensive properties were successfully prepared using a polycondensation reaction method by incorporating p-phenylenediamine (PDA), 4-4′-diaminodiphenyl ether (ODA) and 4,4′-(Hexafluoroisopropylidene) bis (p-phenyleneoxy) dianiline (HFPBDA) into 4,4′-(Hexafluoroisopropylidene) diphthalic anhydride (6FDA), respectively. The effects of the diamine monomer structure on optical, dielectric and mechanical properties were investigated. Compared with PDA and ODA, HFPBDA can effectively improve the optical and dielectric properties of PI due to due to its special chain structure. Among the three PI films, PI-FH film presents the best optic transmission (highest transmittance = 90.2%) and highest energy gap (2.69 eV). The dielectric properties of PI-FH film improve the most. The dielectric constant and loss at 104 Hz are reduced to 2.05 and 0.0034 at 104 Hz, respectively, and remain stable up to 250 °C. The mechanical properties decrease in turn for PI-FP, PI-FO and PI-FH films due to the increase in free volume fraction. Nevertheless, PI-FH film still exhibits good mechanical properties with a tensile strength of 88.4 Mpa, a tensile modulus of 2.11 GPa and an elongation at break of 4.1%. The correlation between the dielectric and mechanical properties of PI films and their free volume characteristics is well explained with the help of positron annihilation spectroscopy.

This study demonstrated the use of a thermally crosslinked polyimide (PI) for the liquid crystal (LC) alignment layer of an LC display (LCD) cell. Polyamic acid was prepared using 4,4′-oxydianiline (ODA) and 4,4′-(hexafluoroisopropylidene) diphthalic anhydride (6FDA). The 6FDA−ODA-based polyimide (PI) prepared by the thermal cyclic dehydration of the polyamic acid (PAA) was soluble in various polar solvents. After forming a thin film by mixing trifunctional epoxide [4-(oxiran-2-ylmethoxy)-N,N-bis(oxiran-2-ylmethyl)aniline] with the 6FDA−ODA-based PAA, it was confirmed that thermal curing at −110 °C caused an epoxy ring opening reaction, which could result in the formation of a networked polyimide not soluble in tetrahydrofuran. The crosslinked PI film showed a higher rigidity than the neat PI films, as measured by the elastic modulus. Furthermore, based on a dynamic mechanical analysis of the neat PI and crosslinked PI films, the glass transition temperatures (Tgs) were 217 and 339 °C, respectively, which provided further evidence of the formation of crosslinking by the addition of the epoxy reagent. After mechanical rubbing using these two PI films, an LC cell was fabricated using an anisotropic PI film as an LC alignment film. LC cells with crosslinked PI layers showed a high voltage holding ratio and low residual direct current voltage. This suggests that the crosslinked PI has good potential for use as an LC alignment layer material in advanced LCD technologies that require high performance and reliability.

A series of novel porous fluorinated polyimide (FPI) separators containing trifluoromethyl group (–CF3) were prepared by the non-solvent induced phase separation (NIPS) strategy. The prepared FPI separator with 60% molar content (fluorinated dianhydride: non-fluorinated dianhydride: diamine = 60: 40: 100) of fluorinated groups (FPI-60%) could stably exist in the electrolyte as a LIBs separator. The resultant FPI-60% separator possesses high thermal stability with the Tg of 289.4°C and exhibits no shrinkage even at 200°C. The morphologies of the FPI-60% separators were adjusted by introducing small molecular non-solvent additives-ethanol, and the FPI-60% separators present the spongy-like and interconnected structure with different porosity as the amount of ethanol changed from 1 wt% to 10 wt%. The FPI-60% separators display excellent electrolyte uptake with 170%–200% and the ionic conductive could reach 1.17 mS/cm which is four times approximately than that of the PP separator. The lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) using FPI-60% separators with 10 wt% ethanol added show better rate capacities (102.8 mAh/g, 70.8 mAh/g of PI-10 and PP separator at 2 C, respectively) and the capacity retention rate is 93.2% after 50 cycles. The results prove that the porous FPI separator is a promising candidate for high-performance LIBs.

Fluorinated polyimide films are widely used in the field of flexible display because of their excellent optical transmittance. Based on previous studies, the adhesion to other substrates of fluorinated polyimide films have been improved by incorporating GAPD into the macromolecular chains, but their heat resistance is not yet very clear. In this study, thermal behaviors of fluorinated polyimide films (PIs) with and without GAPD were studied in N2 ambient and atmosphere by TG-DTG analysis under non-isothermal conditions. Activation energies (Eas) of PIs were calculated by Flynn-Wall-Ozawa method, Kissinger-Akahira-Sunose method and Kissinger method. In addition, mechanisms of thermal decomposition reaction were determined by Coats-Redfern method. By comparison, the Eas of PIs in the same atmosphere were similar and the thermal reaction mechanisms were essentially the same, indicating that adhesion of fluorinated polyimide can be improved by adding appropriate amount of GAPD, while the excellent optical permeability and heat resistance of fluorinated polyimide can be maintained, further expanding its application in flexible display and other fields.

High-speed coherent optical communication has been expanding to handle the ever-increasing data traffic, and the large modulation bandwidth of electro-optic (EO) polymer modulators has been especially appreciated. However, to be useful in optical communication, the EO polymer device should address several issues, such as thermal stability, photo-oxidation, and bias drift. In this work, as a part of the experiments to address these challenges, an EO polymer with a fluorinated polyimide backbone is utilized to create EO polymer modulators with improved thermal stability. A coplanar electrode structure is introduced to enhance the poling efficiency and reduce the bias drift.
