Series of glass based on (80-x)TeO2-10PbO-10PbCl2-xYb2O3 where 0.0 ≤ x ≤ 3.0 has been successfully prepared by melt quenching technique. The amorphous nature of glass has been determined by X-ray diffraction method. Their corrosion behavior was investigated using the FTIR spectroscopy technique on the sample that has been immersed in distilled water and in aqueous solution of pH 4 and pH 9 for 10 days. There were three major absorption peaks around 3600 cm-1, 889 cm-1 and 470 cm-1 has been observed. The intensity of each peak was found to vary with the Yb3+ content.

The optical behaviour of Er3+ (1.0 – 2.0 mol %) doped B2O3-TeO2- Na2O-MgO glasses synthesized by conventional melt-quenching technique was studied through luminescence measurements. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) pattern confirms the amorphous nature of the glasses without the existence of any sharp peak. The emission spectra at 378 nm excitation displayed three emission peaks corresponding to 2H11/2-4I15/2, 4S3/2-4I15/2 and4I9/2-4I15/2 transitions. Hence, a schematic energy level diagram was proposed. The luminescence properties of the prepared glasses was found to be strongly affected by varying the concentration of Er3+ ions.

The spectroscopic performance of Er3+ doped glass at 0.55 mm emission contain different nanoparticles NPs have been comparatively evaluated. Glass containing 1.0 mol % of Er3+ doped with different NPs (Ag, Co and Fe ) have been prepared using melt quenching technique. X-ray diffraction analysis reveals the all the prepared samples are amorphous. The UV-Vis absorption spectra of all glasses show several prominent peaks at 525 nm, 660 nm, 801nm, 982 nm and 959 nm due to transition from ground state 4I15/2 to different excited of 2H11/2, 4F9/2, 4I9/2, 4I11/2, and 4I13/2. The emission of Er3+ at 0.55 mm for glass contain Ag NP shows significant enhancement about 3 folds up to 0.6 mol%. On the other hand, the emission of Er3+ at 0.55 mm for glass containing Fe NPs and Co NPs intensely quench probably due to the energy-transfer from Er3+ ion to NPs and magnetic contributions.

Au NPs contents dependent modifications in the absorption and bonding parameters are inspected. Glass systems with composition (79-y)TeO2 – 15PbO – 5PbCl2 – 1Er2O3 – (y)AuCl3 where 0.0 ≤ y ≤ 0.1 mol% are prepared and characterized using X-ray Diffraction (XRD). The absorption characteristics of the glass are observed using UV-Visible-NIR (UV-VIS-NIR) spectrophotometer. XRD spectra confirm the amorphous nature of all samples. UV-VIS-NIR spectra reveal seven absorption bands centered at about 490, 526, 551, 652, 800, 982 and 1520 nm originating from 4I15/2 to 4F7/2, 2H11/2, 4S3/2,4F9/2, 4I9/2, 4I11/2 and 4I13/2 transitions, respectively. The low value of indicated an increase in the covalency and the positive sign of for all glass systems indicates the bonding between the RE ions and the surrounding ligand is covalent in nature.

Neodymium doped zinc borotellurite glass system were fabricated by using conventional melt-quenching method. The structural properties of the glass system were characterized by using X-ray Diffraction (XRD) method and Fourier Transform analysis (FTIR). The amorphous nature of the glass system was confirmed by using x-ray diffraction method. The transmission band of TeO3 structural units which indicate the existence of non-bridging oxygen was shown by FTIR analysis. The optical properties of the glass system were determined by using UV-Vis spectrophotometer. Several bands were shown in the absorption spectra which indicate the characteristic of neodymium ions. The obtained values of indirect optical band gap, Eopt lies in the range of 3.151 eV and 3.184 eV.

Five distinguish glass samples were prepared by melt quenching technique of the composition (81-x)H3BO3-19BaCO3-xDy2O3 with x = 0, 0.2, 0.4, 0.6 and 0.8 mol%. The effect of Dy3+ to the barium borate glass can be investigated in terms of their physical properties such as density, molar volume and oxygen packing density. The structural properties were analyzed by X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) technique and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR). The result revealed that the increment of mol% of Dy3+ in the compound generally will increases the density and molar volume of the glass samples. The amorphous nature of the glass system was verified from the XRD spectra pattern. Meanwhile, the FTIR spectra shown the presence of Ba2+, BO3, BO4, B-O-B linkage, H-O-H and isolated borate in the glass network.

Tellurite glasses of varying Er3+/Nd3+ concentration were successfully prepared by melt-quenching method. The X-Ray diffraction pattern was determined by using Siemens Diffractometer D5000 while the optical properties were measured using Shimadzu 3101 pc UV-VIS NIR scanning spectrophotometer. It was found that the diffraction patterns of all samples showed glasses characteristics. The optical band gap, Eopt¬ increased proportionally with the content of Er¬2O3 but Urbach energy, ∆E decreased due to the increasing Er2O3 contents.

Borotellurite glasses were prepared by melt quenching technique. Amorphous nature of samples was confirmed through X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns. Effect of B2O3 content on the structure of glass network was studied through Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) spectra. Optical band gap and Urbach energy were found from analysis of optical absorption spectra. Thermal studies were carried out by using Differential thermal analyzer (DTA) measurements.

Erbium doped zinc borotellurite glasses were prepared by using melt-quenching method. The structural properties of the glass samples were determined by using x-ray diffraction (XRD) method and was confirmed its amorphous nature. The density and molar volume is shown to be increased with increasing content of erbium. The refractive index is found to be increased with increasing content of erbium.

Series of glass samples with composition (72.5-x)TeO2-15MgO-10Na2O-2.5Nd2O3-xNiO where 1.0 ≤ x ≤ 2.5 mol% are prepared using melt quenching method. The glasses are characterized via X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). The XRD spectra confirmed the amorphous nature of prepared glasses. TEM images manifest the existence of NiO NPs which are homogeneously distributed in the glass matrix. The magnetization M(H) curve reveals that the glass displays an anomalous hysteresis behavior at room temperature. It is observed that M(H) is dependent on the NiO content. The initial curve of magnetization lies positively as a function of the magnetic field under 1000 H (O.e).
